ECT4Health - Oedema (edema) and how fluid leaks out of Capillaries

Rob Timmings from ECT4Health takes a closer look at capillaries and how they leak into the interstitial space to cause oedems (edema). This short video takes a simple view of some of the pathophysiology seen in the inflammatory cascade .

I am in nursing school and this video is by far the best one I have found. Very educational and simple. A lot of videos explain what happens and not why it happens, which is crucial to understanding the content. Thank you for doing both!

Oh my God, how I am thankful to you, your time, your extremely simplified explanations that really explains the entire process. No strong, undigestible medical terminology, yet explain a wide range and their reasons of medical field- from circulatory system, lymphatic system, and mechanisms of pressures inside our bodies. Amazing!

Fiiiiiiiiiiinallly! A good, solid, simple explanation of how a loss of pressure INSIDE the blood vessel (the oncotic pressure) leads to fluid flow OUT of the blood vessel. Explanations that fail to distinguish hydrostatic pressure from oncotic pressure have left me scratching my head, wondering why fluid flows into the interstitium, following a loss in pressure within the blood vessel. Now I know. Thanks for this awesome explanation.

I developed edema after a burn once, I was going to buy a syringe and draw out the fluid, but I decided to wait a few days, and the fluid was easy to squeeze out by hand. It came out as a redish liquid. It's obviously a side effect from swelling.

Almost certainly it relates to venous pooling in your lower legs when you sit with them down for long periods of time. As veins become congested, it increases the back pressure in capillaries causing leakage of plasma water into the interstitial spaces. The result is ankle and calf oedema. Moving your legs every few minutes helps to reduce the oedema forming

+Rob Timmings hi, i just seen your video and its awesome explanation. i just want to ask regarding @koreishite question, my mom also has the same symptom, so can we think maybe this is the early sign of renal problem or maybe because of the gravitation effect that can make renal think that the effective artery blood volume is decrease so it will cause water retention? thank you.

Wonderful explanation. But I feel it is complete because I am just recovering from Edema. The donkey doctors I approached in India have concluded that I had a heart ailment as the blood pumping by the heart is not upto the mark. In private, they have expressed the opinion that the solution to my problem is heart transplantation. Donkey assholes!!
