During the opening Ceremony of the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Ecowas Heads of States and Government that was held in Abuja, on July 7th 2027, the Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was re-elected as the Chairman of the Authority for the second one year term.
It was a unanimous decision that was made by fellow Heads of Government, and upon being re-elected, Tinubu vowed in his acceptance speech to Consolidate Democratic Values within the bloc
He pledged to focus on consolidating democratic values and upholding the interest of the regional body, which will clock 50 years in 2025.
He also appointed the President of Senegal, Bassirou Deeomaye Faaye, and the President of Togo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and the Niger Republic.
He then appealed to member states to provide financial support in the battle against terrorism in the region, stressing the need for both political will and substantial financial resources to combat terrorism, through the ECOWAS Standby Force.
He urged member states to follow through on commitments made by their defence and finance ministers to stabilize the region.
