Ecovative Design: Manufactured Wood Made Without Trees

April 13 -- Ecovative Design has made a mission of replacing synthetic plastic polymers with natural mushroom based polymers. After disrupting the packaging industry with a line of fully biodegradable mushroom packaging, they are now setting their sights on replacing manufactured wood products. Formaldehyde is quite present in the home then. Lemonine/perfume which is in a tonne of products such as air fresheners, cleaning products, shampoo, perfume and cented candles. It reacts with oxygen to make formaldehyde in the air. A study found that over winter periods in the UK the formaldehyde levels in a typical home were at a dangerous level because all windows are shut

I would love to see this process done with Hemp. Hemp is one of the strongest fibers we know of, it does not rot, insects don't like it and a couple of acres of hemp can produce the equivalent of 10 acres of old-growth forest and do it every year.

I'd rather it be done with hemp. Mycelium contain mycotoxins that can be really harmful to people. This seems like it has the potential to be the new asbestos/lead paint.. in 30 years you can get all kinds of cancer after exposure. The fungus might be dead after pressing, but only certain chemical reactions can denature the mycotoxins. Making home building materials out of inoculated corn crop waste and other agricultural waste seems like the worst idea ever to me when considering how easily a home can be affected by mold via water damage even with building materials that are supposed to be mold and water-resistant.

I think the problem they are fixing is exaggerated, but I also think impregnating the mycelium board with resin would make practically bulletproof structural material. Imagine wind turbine blades made with impregnated mycelium and corn stalk waste rather than fiberglass.

it would be worse than fibreglass. this is because of the way the fibres are structured in the two materials and the tensile strenght of each fibre. glass fibre has a higher tensile strenght mycelium. aslo if you can controll the fibrestructure in a glassfibre board thus making the glassfibre board stronger or get a spesific mechanical property, somthing that you cant do with mycelium based boards. glassfibre is comparable to kevlar and carbonfibre and is a much more suitible material than mycelium.

I know this stuff. Mycelium, or roots of the fungus, gives you access to the mycelial network, a discrete subspace domain. This is especially useful if you have faulty dilithium crystals or a shortage of deuterium.
