    I started one in a giant wine glass. Inspired by this channel. I made a rock scape and a twisted piece of wood that looks like a bansai tree that pokes out the top. I put air plants on the top of the wood to make it look like a tree. I used aqua soil in it and put water plants in there. I have two minows in there. when I went to start my second one in a large vase I took some plants from the first one. I was recently surpised to find baby fish hatched out of the plants. 😂 They're so cute and enjoyable. They've been going strong about 10 months now with no issues.

    You know, many of the plants we have in our aquariums come from areas that will flood, then dry out. So they are used to going into an emergent mode with different leaves and stems capable of holding up in the gravity. Some will die back, except for the roots/bulbs they sprout anew as the rains fall. Love seeing your work.

  • @bevmaloney
    @bevmaloney14 күн бұрын

    I was so glad to see how you handled plants that wouldn't stay in the substrate. That is one problem I have that I haven't seen you address. I have a medium sized bowl that I've planted after watching your channel. It started when I dismantled my aquarium after the last snail died. I still had an annubias nana and I didn't want to toss it, so I've been trying out different planters and have added a few more plants like Java fern, etc. It's on my desk on a bamboo platform with an attached overhead light. I haven't added any snails or shrimp because I don't want to deal with any more death :(

    I have been extremely discouraged and disappointed in my fish aquarium hobby. Lots of dead fish and plants. Sometimes my water parameters were great. Then an ammonia spike. The water changes were killing my back. Bucket method. At any rate I have given up. 4 years of trying and failing. But, I may try the plants in the vase/container method. Perhaps, I can succeed with that. I am always getting wonderful inspiration from you.

    A big 500ml syringe is ideal for doing waterchanegs on these and even nano tanks if you dont need to do big water changes. No mess with a syringe, water your house plants with it, or blast it 40 foot up your garden through the window lol. 14:36 You can see it in the background (under the “JAPI” poster.) It looks rather dark but the two clownfish are alive and there’s one pink anemone visible. Salt water is a whole ‘nother ball of wax.

    I've tried using soil in some of my tanks with no success. I just stick to gravel, It works better for me.

    love your tanks but if all you have is petco or petsmart the choice on plants is no where near the stuff you get... not many if any mom and pop shops stock plants and if they do, they look like crap.

    Those “big box” pet shops are only good for very basic items. Try ordering from online aquatic plant growers.

    Could I put my guppy fry in one to grow out? They mostly all get eaten in my community tank. ❤️🇦🇺

    I don't know if I did something wrong but I followed your original vase video to the letter and one week in my nitrite and nitrate levels are through the roof. Fortunately there is no livestock in the tank as they would not survive but I didn't expect that. I used Velda pond soil has it just leeched a ton of ammonia and if so does that mean its no good for a no filter setup?

    Im not familiar with the brand but keep daily water changes going until you don't see the spike. It is most likely the soil which by changing the water daily will dilute. Did you cap with at least an inch of sand?

    @@MDFishTanks An inch of cap and about an inch and a half of nutribase/soil mix. I haven't done any water changes so will do that. Thanks!
