Can the threaded brass fitting be removed if I wish to use the plastic tubing instead?

My plumber added this filter to my ice maker and the ice tastes nasty. You have to rinse the ice to get rid of the aftertaste. We have great tasting water. It been on there for months and it hasn't gotten any better.

They might have not run enough water through before hook up, we get that every time we replace the filter on our fridge with it in built, and the water bottle filler at work

Make sure you don't have anything in your freezer giving off odors that could be picked up by the ice - it's not necessarily just the water. If you're 'rinsing it off' to get rid of the bad taste, it's something on the outside of the cubes, not the cubes themselves.
