Economists urge Albanese government to stop budget ‘spend-a-thon'

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor has accused the Albanese government of being “addicted” to spending.
There is growing concern the Albanese government’s Future Made in Australia agenda could exacerbate inflation.
Independent economist Chris Richardson warned it could lead to increased budget deficits over time as a result.
“This is why we are hearing economists from many quarters coming out and saying they have got to stop the spend-a-thon,” Mr Taylor told Sky News Australia.
“We have seen inflation data coming out just in the last week or so where inflation is going up, not down.”

It's only understandable, I know, and have seen for myself of people worrying about their finances, their kids' future, and repayments they can't make, and the pressure and stress of it all. I bought a homeless guy fish and chips the other day and gave it to him, and we got talking, and this is exactly what happened to him, hardship, anxiety, worry and stress caused his marriage breakdown. and that, my friend, is no laughing matter.

Not very nice to mortgage holders trying to own a home. There are way way more people with mortgages than people who are wealthy enough to have savings in the bank. They aren't the ones driving inflation up, yet you would punish them for a small gain in your bank account. They are too busy trying to keep a roof over their heads. How about build more homes and lower immigration, keep power cheap and lower the fuel tax. There are plenty of ways to lower inflation. As everyone states all the time, the R.B.A. interest rate rises are a blunt tool. It's the only one they've got. This Govt can do better if it chooses to. But chooses not to and continues to spend, hence inflation.

@@user-od9ud6dt3m no1. Mortgage holders really expect interest rates to stay at zero. Average cash rate over 60 years has been 5.45percent. so stop crying me a river. 2. I paid 18 percent interest and had much lower wages. 3. They can buy elsewhere like Darwin or overseas like I have building a 10 million dollar mansion for only 250 k. 4. No all self funded retirees are rich Some only have 100k in bank. Yet they don't get pension saving tax payers billions. 5. There are more self funded retirees than mortgage holder. 6. Raising interest rates will force people that have more than one house and those empty apartments to come on the market. We seeing this already. Immigration hasn't caused inflation the people haven't all arrived yet most are using cheap accomodation assues don't want. Inflation caused by lack of supply, debt from Covid, increase wages, high fuel prices, business pasting on cost, greedy insurance cost and energy cost. As well as higher rents and house prices. Is saving in bank will cause inflation come down provide cooling of economy and lower rents and cooling off house prices. Go back to economics school.
