Economics of Land Transport in Singapore - Managing Traffic Congestion in Singapore

Jointly developed by LTA and MOE and launched in August 2010 for A'Levels Economics students, this is the last of a series of four case study videos that illustrate how economic concepts and principles apply to the land transport system in Singapore.
Managing Traffic Contestion in Singapore:
With limited land area and competing needs for land usage, meeting the increasing travel demands of Singaporeans is a huge challenge in Singapore. Traffic congestion is a negative externality and results in market failure. What steps can the government take to tackle the problem of traffic congestion? Find out more about SIngapore's approach to managing traffic congestion.

I like it that Singapore has been able to keep its motor vehicle per capita lower than a lot of other high-income countries or territories. Singapore also beats most former Eastern Bloc countries and territories in having lower motor vehicle ownership, including most ex-Soviet republics.

This is why I believe pricing in negative externalities (while rewarding positive externalities) will solve most of the world's problems.

I love the first example, regarding negative externalities.

Bogota Colombia is looking to get into the implementation of this, because the Dollar versus the Colombian Peso has become so weak for so many years already, that for so many people now it is affordable to buy new cars and now there is no space for them in the city and therefore huge congestions everywhere.

I have said this back in the year 2014. It has been 3 years since then. The situation of the dollar has changed dramatically due to the downfall of the oil price and therefore the colombian currency has devaluated big time. To buy a car is now not that easy as before. We will see what happen now.

Land scarcity is not the primary cause. Its only a secondary cause. Its Solution Scarcity. Mass immigration without a solution to handle the increase in traffic volume. Its a no-brainer there will be more congestion. Everything has an excuse and constraint. Its whether you can come up with the solution and not come up with Excuses.

Singapore, according to a Wikipedia article on vehicles per capita, has more vehicles per capita than Albania, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan or Uzbekistan, but has fewer than Kosovo, Belarus or any Council of Europe member state except Albania or Azerbaijan. That is impressive for an Asian country with an income per capita higher than almost any CoE member state or territory.

Building viaducts creates more vehicle usage on the roads, thereby increasing congestion. Just look at Malaysia. And also, building viaducts is costly compared to building on flat land.
