It happens to the best of us, don't sweat it, it will get done. I installed a bad engine before, you know that's a drag.
Replacement of both would be best but not buying a vehicle with a turbo engine is better ! Most owners do not maintain them very well. At least in my 45 + years as a mechanic. 2nd owners are the ones who foot this bill.

You are spot on most people that buy new do minimal maintenance and then unload them before they have to foot a repair bill leaving the new owner holding the bag.

Wow! Sad to see you have to go through that whole remove/install process again. I guess the good news is that you wont have to deal with the frozen bolts this time. It is interesting to note that these kind of things happen to the pro's, I have had to re-do to many of my do it yourself repairs because of defective parts.

@@on-site4094 If you're doing the work yourself, its not a difficult job. The exhaust is on the back side of the engine, and there's a big crossmember that needs to come down. Once you do that, you'll have plenty of room to get the turbo out. It looks worse than it is. If you get the workshop manual for your vehicle, it will give you step by step instructions for every nut and bolt on the job.
Love the longer video's Kenny.I like the extra info.

Kenny I shared you on my channel. Hope you don't mind. I have watched you ever since you found the bee hive or wasp nest in the intake on a ranger lol
Kenny at first seeing this : must be a clogged oil returnline Always replace the return line (don't clean it, it contains burned oil) The returnflow keeps the oil level at the bearings at a specific level, so with a clogged return the oil level rises obove the wanted level and a leak occurs.
e have enough problem's with naturally aspirated engines never mind turbo engines , thanks Kenny

Repair-Pal estimates for this one only left side turbocharger is $1500 to $2000 dollars. I'll continue with my V6 non turbo 2015 Toyota Tacoma thank you very much!! By the way, all of that brittle plastic and degradable rubber exposed to all of that engine heat is a potential vacuum leak just waiting to occur.
A couple of years ago I was looking for a replacement for my '06 F150 with a 4.6L, and all I could find were trucks with the Eco-Boost engines. I have a couple of friends that have them, and they have both had turbo problems, so I gave up and kept the old truck. Salesmen really pressured me to go with one, but I wasn't convinced. Simple is better. Admittedly they put out a lot of power and get bett Good video Kenny.er fuel mileage, but over the long run, if you have any problems with them, the costs outweigh the savings, IMHO. Good video Kenny, looks like it was a real bear to change. Bummer on having a leak and having to do it all over again. 😦

The F250 with the gas engine is a more sensible option. 6 speed trans, no vvt, normal fuel injection system, no push button start, etc.. It has some newer tech on it but its not a rolling computer network like an F150. Its a lot cheaper too. I haven't seen one for a while because I work at a Lincoln only dealership, but sometime within the last 2 years, the window sticker was under 40k. Everyone overlooks that particular truck.

Kenny- I replaced both turbos on my 2014 with 209000 miles- because the exhaust manifold all leak badly. Check your job, they leak at the rear, BD Diesel makes a superior replacement. The oil line MUST be removed and the screen at the other end MUST be cleaned or replaced- they clog and that leads to turbo failure. I replaced all the coolant and oil lines and all fittings. I also ditched that restricted exhaust flange for a bigger one, a few places sell them. The 3 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold should be replaced as they are an interference fit into the flange. I watched many hours of KZread and tackled mine took 2 weeks but it works perfectly. Fordtechmakuloco explains it all very well. Those push fittings, though ........junk. I think yours needs new coolant and oil lines. You do NOT want to do this again.... Good Luck Kenny!!

Teflond tape
@41:55 I believe "bottoming tap" is what you refer to here. You can improvise one (particularly just for thread cleanup) by filing a couple of slots lengthwise in a bolt. A plug tap can be converted into a bottoming tap by cutting the tapered end off, but this has to be done with care and a lot of cooling so the heat of cutting doesn't anneal the tap and make it soft. Those tap sockets are AWESOME for getting into tight spots that can't fit a traditional tap wrench.
I really enjoy your videos, thanks for making them! It's good to get an experienced mechanics view.
Great video! Enjoy all the videos you make! 😎👍
Thanks from Australia
Calm down wild man with the stool
I know a lot of times it's highly subjective on mileage because things can break at any time but I always heard that the turbos are quite a common thing on those engine models at least having to change it at least once during the engine's life but the newer ones I think around 17 and up our less prone to that turbo failure
I had a leaking coolant line in my 2015 . I bought it at 38K miles the dealer fixed it.

Good job Kenny. But did you replace the turbo filter screen?
Is there a reason that anticize was not used on the flange bolts were the turbo bolted to the engine. I saw were you were having difficulty getting the bolts out and would think having anticize on them would be easier to remove them next time. Good job at removing and replacing the turbo. First time I have seen this on you tube.
It would be too thoughtful and convenient for car makers to put anti-seize on bolts at the factory which they may assume might need to be removed for service.
Although many prefer a "longer" video, I, being a mechanic(45+ years), prefer the shorter ones you used to make, as the removing & tightening of parts is trivial UNLESS there is some unusual item that sets it apart from the mundane.

Why not replace both turbos? Because you’re going to sell it. Me as a buyer: 1. I’m not buying a turbo engine. 2. Every mechanic gasoline or diesel knows what a jesus clip is. It’s the name the clip is spontaneously given in the excitement of the moment when the clip goes flying across the bay floor into the abyss. This is followed with other profanities when you find the parts room doesn’t have a replacement and you can’t release the vehicle for a fifteen cent part.

Why wouldn't you get new studs.
Ford apparently has no damn idea how to put a turbo on a vehicle. The Ecoboost truck motors are a nightmare for owners. So much extra expense and maintenance. And the Escape.... I like my 2016 but replacing the turbo in that car was one of the more difficult jobs I've done in a long time. Took me 2 days because its on the back of the engine against the firewall. Would have been easier to just drop the entire cradle out of the car.
The reason they call it a Jesus clip is when you lose it you say" there it went Jesus I wish I had another one " .
That "Jesus clip" tool keeps one from taking the Lords name in vain! 🤣🤣

Turbo is the problem for all engines you get haft the life of the engine's

I agree. To me,, the small displacement along with the raised power band automatically disqualifies these as truck engines. On the other hand, my Powerstroke would be a real dog without its turbo. Diesels are a whole different animal though.
Remind me to never buy a turbocharged engine vehicle. I will never own one.
As much as I love your videos and learn a lot from them, I found this far too long as others have said. I really don't have the time to sit for an hour and watch. OK, I could pause it and return, but then you kind of loose the momentum.
I hate the sudo-word "Eco" tacked on to any product marketing moniker. It is a weasel word designed to imply economy or environmentally but is neither. It is particularly egresses when tacked on the the word "diesel."
Don't feel bad my brother as you end this video saying 'epic fail'. The problem is not you. You kept filming the actual problem and that is "ECOBOOST", the emblem on the side of the door. I'd be embarrassed if I were Ford to put shit out there like this in the first place. I guess you can tell I really don't like Fords.
Owner doesn’t want to fix the other side because he will probably dump the car very soon, and buy a Toyota instead.
This is why I try and avoid purchasing a car with turbos, not to mention other reasons why 🤦♂️
