The only 'smart' device I currently have is the ecobee thermostat. I recently spent A LOT of money replacing the HVAC system and water tank; mainly because the HVAC unit outside was broken and kept running on auxiliary power to heat & cool and the electric bill at home came out to be like 5x more than normal. Now it's about what I normally expect. So far I think the ecobee thermostat is nice so maybe I'll consider this video door bell system.

I’m looking forward to your follow-up video when you add a second thermostat. I’m curious to see if the doorbell rings at both thermostats and if both thermostats will function as keypads for the alarm.

Does anyone know if you can have the Ecobee light switch play any sound when the Ecobee doorbell is pressed? That would be a sick addition

I think this would be great if they allowed you to buy the hardware, use the software and save video clips to your own storage. I’m grandfathered in to the Blink free cloud storage and there’s no way I’m switching unless another company does that.

Can you disable the video on the thermostat? as some thermostats can be in bedrooms?

Do they have a wireless one that will work with Xfinity?

So the video only plays through ecobee devices (really just the smart thermostat premium)? It can't play on Google or apple products?

Does the thermostat require a battery? I have a nest thermostat and hate it because after a few years the built-in battery died and it causes all sorts of issues.

I’m thinking about trying this so I can ditch my Ring subscription. I know this has a subscription, but it is HomeKit compatible. I run my ecobee lite thermostat through HomeKit and have HomeKit turn off the a/c when the sliding glass door is left open. My guess is that HomeKit will still record video and show up on my Apple TV. I don’t think I would answer the door using my thermostat.

I am moving fully over to HomeKit myself so this was just another product to complete the smarthome setup. Slowly moving away from my Nest and Google system I have had for years.

If you have a AppleTV does the footage of the doorbell show up or is this strictly only on the Thermostat?

It works with HomeKit but doesn’t support HomeKit secure video. You should be able to see notifications on AppleTV/iPhone per my understanding and ring on HomePod if you want to do that. My problem with this device is that it depends upon cloud to store pictures (no local storage).

Does the ecobee doorbell only works with thermostat premium? What about the Enchanced and lite3 versions?

Unfortunately they don’t. I really feel like that is the next step for them. I hope to see them soon.

Ready for the switch from google/nest too, but doesn't look like ecobee has outdoor cams.

@@dannywinget are you using nest cams until Ecobee comes out with some or did you find others that are better. Lately Google home app has really not been working well for me. Previews don't load and loading live view takes awhile. I don't think its my wifi its pretty fast and wide strong coverage. Super annoying you still have to use the nest app for some items.

very interested in this...does the siren play through thermostat? since it is connected to homekit can the alarm go off with homepod minis...where does the siren play through if sensor is opened?

Yes the thermostat premium plays the siren! The thermostat is where the noise comes through when sensors are opened.

It has a subscription? Welp, so much for that.

Thanks Danny, perfect timing bro. I am also tied into Nest. I almost got a bunch more, but the IQ line up is gone and they moved to the Home app which is not great at all. One thing I want is a global clipping setting for cameras. If one triggers it causes an event on them all. If they dont clip at the right time you might miss something. I can't wait to hear about your whole house setup. My Nest is also whole home. I have door, many cameras, secure etc. I want to know about how it shows up on Google hub or similar. Because it is a good devices for central management of your lights, doors, security etc.

No local storage? Goes down if the their cloud is inaccessible? No thanks.

I don’t see myself going up to the thermostat to look at video. Thermostat are placed at specific locations only they aren’t flexible when it comes to where you can place them 🤷🏻‍♂️

I can see that. It’s meant to be more of an add on to your existing solutions where you have more points of contact for the doorbell. Mine is perfectly placed before my front door so I can see who is at the door before I answer. So I think this will depend on the location like you said but I can see this being very handy for multi floor homes.

Was interested until I saw they are making you pay for hosting and features monthly. I know this has become standard but we have also seen data breaches. Just give me simple self contained system that I can provide storage for and call it a day.

Yeah I can see that point for sure. I hope Ecobee takes that into consideration for the future. Most of these companies are going to emulate other successful models and are going to be focused on recurring revenue but I would love to see that option as well.

Not a bad product, at first glance, but I honestly just don't trust any smarthome company that won't let me selfhost everything. These products will either be discontinued eventually, or they'll have a cloud security breach
