As great as that machine is, I always tend to just go with the Skid Steer and levelling the world a layer at at ime. I remember that if you position the arm juuust right you can get a good speed consuming dirt by slightly bumping it from the top. Gets even better if you have a buddy or two with trucks unloading the inventory remotely so you don't have to stop!

You can do a lot with someone to haul stuff away but back in 0.8, the controls were intuitive enough that I spent hours running the excavator seamlessly, back when gold was in little 2-4 chunks at the bottom of the world.
