Ecler WARM4 Rotary Mixer Review | Beatsource Tech

Музыка

Ecler came back into the DJ gear game with a vengeance last year, releasing their Warm 2 rotary mixer. Now they’ve followed that up with the WARM4, another all analogue rotary which adds 2 more channels, and some unique features. On the new episode of Beatsource Tech, Mojaxx gives it a full review, and asks if twice the channels equals twice the fun.

The Ecler Warm 4 sounds like the SAAB 900 Turbo of boutique rotary mixers. 😊 I loved my SAAB because it was quirky. Quirky doesn’t mean poorly designed or incapable. Quite the contrary with that car and this mixer. And while the sub harmonic feature probably isn’t something I’d use I’m super keen on hearing well into my late 80’s so split cue is a must for me. Great review as always @mojaxx! ✊🏽

I think your review of the sub harmonic feature was very interesting and it's great to have gear educating us about gear of the past and reintroducing it. It might not be for everyone but it's really nice to see different features coming out on mixers. As rotary's are becoming popular Ecler has something brought something new to offer DJs as well as a great price. Thanks for the great reviews and insights.

Still use a Ecler Hak 380 and to me its still one of the best battle scratch mixers , the scratch cue system enabling you to dail im the scratching on the crossfader in your hear phones was genius, plus the Eternal crossfader was as good as it gets for a scratch dj and a shame it only goes in a few of there mixers ....great reviews

One of my regular house gigs has below par monitoring and split cue is a life saver, I spend all night mixing on IEMs. I may just diy a solution with an external small audio mixer and grab one anyway. I covet thou rotary!

I can't say with any certainty, but I believe that the +12dB switch on the Master and Booth Outputs is a response to a major complaint about the Nuo series mixers, which was that they had a quite low master output by design. They were intended to he routed to a house mixer, and therefore kept the signal output low so as to not overdrive the mic preamps and require attenuation. If you were connecting directly to speakers however, the output was underwhelming and needed a lot of amplification. Very glad to have the option to boost output on these new models!

One of these guys who installs or specs mixers in big venues. I would never use the Warm 4. The subharmonic synth has definitely a place with Disco and early NY Garage and, to an extent, even with early House Music. But with everything modern, read as sub heavy, DJs will slowly cook the drivers without realising it. Will soon do a video about it. Great feature for those "world music rare groove folks" not so much for anyone else. 🙂

  • @AuftragSound

    @AuftragSound

    9 ай бұрын

@@moket123 yes they have, but it is like a rev limiter in a car. If you drive your car constantly in the rev limiter it will break. Two types of damage can occur driving a speaker too hard, and too much short-term power will result in torn drivers. The other is too much heat because too much power over a long period of time. This will cook the driver and the voice coil will melt. If you want to produce a lot more very low bass, the system has to work a lot harder, up to 10 times more electrical power is needed. Even with the proper limiters in place, chances are super high that DJs will blow drivers. All that is even worse on horn-loaded sound systems.

I’ve worked over the years in various area’s of event production. I also have a friend who’s dad worked with the wall of sound Phil Specter. Installed sound into Electric Lady Studios. He was also one of several sound engineers for Grateful Dead. I also was in Nyc clubs in the early 90’s with sound guys who were assistants to Alex Rosner and Richard Long. So from that standpoint A proper sound system is running at no more than 30% capacity. That is what the original club installs were set to. That means even the most extreme spikes, 4 pole 24db filters and any sub-harmonic effect has plenty of headroom. If you are not into that level of discipline, Stay away. If you understand that, you have entered the masterclass level.

  • @LucaSchiavoni79

Thanks for raising this - I was going to comment about it. Most rotary mixers have a "sweet spot" where you have to land with the volume of each channel, called "unity gain" (i.e. where input equals output). The thing is, these mixers don't have a gain pot so you need to reach this unity gain point on the main pot of a channel. For most rotaries, this is indeed around 3PM or 7-8/10. However, this Warm 4 mixer (like the Mastersounds Radius 4 Valve) has gain pots on each channel. Mastersounds explicitly says you just set the gain and then turn the main channel pot to the max. I expect it to be the same for this mixer too. So essentially you treat each channel like those of a linear faders mixer - set the gain and then turn the fader up to the max. I hope this makes sense - I think I've explained it in a somewhat convoluted way! Oh - and thanks @Mojaxx for another great review. Who knows I might take the plunge on this now :)

Knobs have still the problem, that they reflect in the lights in the Club and its a problem to have a Quick overview. I even wrote eclerdj, asking for alternative knobs ... there are none...

That isolator sound like it has a slight delay! Is the mixer full anolog or both digital & anolog?

The isolator on/off switch has a delay (by design) but not the isolator itself. The mixer is fully analogue.

If any one watching this likes the idea of the harmonic synth feature then do yourselves a favour and hunt down a now deleted Aphex Aural Exciter and Big Bottom rack - without doubt my favourite piece of dj add on gear. It uses same harmonic frequency fill ins for thicker fatter bass but also for the high end frequencies - adding a glorious sparkle for those tracks needing it (think dulled / poorly produced vinyl etc). In fact the tech was first used by Fleetwood Mac back in the 70s to add sparkle to tapes that were being worn out during studio recordings.

Shouldn't a rotary mixer be cheaper compared to the crossfader mixers? After all, there are components missing that are saved with the rotary? Can someone enlighten me please ? I never used a rotary one and have less knowledge about mixer technology. Btw the WARM4 looks cool.

The Subharmonic synthesizer feels like a gimmick. I usually run my gear to a seperate PA mixer and feed subs via an aux send.
