I really enjoy Iain banks. Some don't care for Consider Phlebus but I enjoyed it as well as the following ones. I am steering more and more to the vintage works. Bought several Ace Doubles this week.

So much to explore in vintage SF, especially tales that stand the test of time.

Lester del Rey was an odd duck, but I have that collection of short stories and I like 'em all. But I really enjoyed "Helen O'Loy" best of all. Nice haul and interesting presentation. I am a recent subscriber, and looking forward to exploring your archive. Cheers.

Congratulations on finding a new used book store. I just discovered Book Mountain in Santa Fe recently and am having a lot of fun. It has been awhile since I read Men, Martians and Machines byEric Frank Russell. I don't remember a lot of it but I do remember being reminded of Voyage of the Space Beagle by A.E. van Vogt. Twilight Zone Revisited is actually a series of stories adapted by Walter Gibson from story ideas by Rod Serling. Serling's name is on the cover, since nobody had heard of Gibson. I remember enjoying the stories, despite the bait and switch. The Big Jump is one of Leigh Brakett's space operas. I don't remember a lot about it other than it was readable. The Secret of Sinharat, on the other hand, features Eric John Stark, her preeminent hero. Stark was born in the twilight belt of Mercury, back when the planet rotated with a single face toward the sun. After the death of his parents, he was raised by very primitive, barely sentient aborigines. Like a certain tree-swinging fellow who was raised by great apes, he doesn't really fit in among civilized people and makes his living as a mercenary among the more primitive places on the planets. The Trillion Year Spree by Brian W. Aldiss: you once asked me how I had acquired all my knowledge of SF. This book was one of the ways. Congratulations, you are on your way to being a SMOF.

Had to look that up. Fortunately Wikipedia had an entry. I value your nomination!

Nice haul. I also haven't read Edmund Cooper yet, but picked up a lot of his books last year. They all have very intriguing premises on the blurb. Sea-Horse in the Sky in particular comes highly recommended, I hear.

You cant go wrong with Leigh Brackett. Both those books are good! Consider Phlebas was my introduction to the Culture books and worked well for me. Also, Congrats on 1k subscribers!

I read _Trillion Year Spree_ in the early '90s when I was 20 years old. It is *the single best one-volume history of science fiction ever written.* Put your current TBR on pause. Read this book now. Seriously.

Here's an update on the Trillion Year Spree book just featured... My public library had the 1973 edition titled Billion Year Spree by Aldiss and minus the other gentleman. I remember thumbing through the 1973 edition and it was definitely encyclopedic in scope and bulk. That's a great find for you!

Just started reading it. Indeed it is an updated and revised edition from 1986.

nice haul Richard, always good to find a new source! Consider Phlebas is the first Culture book. Many people feel that it isn't the best starting point, Player of Games being a better one of his early books. Consider Phlebas is good but I don't think he'd hit his stride yet. I liked it well enough, especially on re-reading as I thought it gave some good introductions to some of the deep background. 👍👍

I'll shelve 'Consider Phlebas' for now and watch for 'Player of Games'. On another author, I've been slowly collecting some Alastair Reynolds and will probably start with 'House of Suns'.
