Eckhart Tolle on the Socratic Method: "I Know That I Know Nothing"

Eckhart explores Socrates' famous statement, “I’m the only one who knows that he knows nothing," along with what we can learn from it in the modern day. The ability to approach life from the perspective of not knowing anything sounds easy, but can be rather difficult. With Eckhart's guidance, take this moment to learn how to apply this wisdom to your everyday life.

Eckhart never ceases to amaze me. He has a unique way of communicating what is in essence a very simple message. Life is universal - it cannot be understood in the classical mind-based way. Dissolve your mind based identity, your ego, and you have eternal peace of ... pun intended ... no mind.

Thought forms are like boxes moving on a conveyer belt in a factory that pass through our minds wether we like it or not but when one stops thinking or goes beyond thought there are no boxes on the conveyer belt yet the conveyer belt still moves continuously which is the flow of divine consciousness. The trick is to not identify ourselves as the boxes which results in form based identity.

I recognize what you say about the works of Plato. It has definitely influenced my way of thinking. I have read all of Plato's works, the politeia five times. The spiritual expressiveness is great, because it is a search for consciousness. Here in the Netherlands, Plato's works have been translated by people who understood this (School of Philosophy, in the line of Gurdjieff and Vedanta). Now these and other books remain on the bookshelves, except the Asthavakra Samhita and some words of Ramana. But still, after forty years (now i am 72) , the words of Socrates come to my mind when necessary.

Eckhart talks about Socrates and Plato and then how people get lost in their own thinking. He could have made the connection with Plato's allegory of the cave where people watch images projected on the cave walls and make a life of doing that. Of course the images are a metaphor of our own thoughts and feelings which we take to be real, becoming totally absorbed by them to the exclusion of all else. We have to leave the cave and our absorption with thoughts and feelings and come into the sunlight outside if we want to live an authentic life. Much thanks, Eckhart, for your insights.

Once you “remove” your self and enter the state of the “beginners mind” then you are able to tap into higher or collective intelligence and the information/inspiration can be received instantaneously via the “sixth sense” … it simply becomes available in forms of serendipity/luck/inspiration… and so on. One needs to be able to accept this as a natural part of one’s own body / physical existence

..I observe a memory of me the person laying in bed shaking with anxiety. I observed the mind ask the question "..what does this (thought voice of mind and body) truthfully know about I that is observing this question?". I observed the mind realise that it knows and unknows nothing about I am, so what is the point of trying to think about I am? I observed the Bodymind Surrender with a Sigh of Relief at the impossible task of defining I. I am aware that I the formless intelligent awareness am neither knowing nor am I unknowing! I am that I am. About a week or so later the anxiety returned, but it had no hold and faded as swift as it appeared to I. Anxiety is no more than a simple alert to the misidentification. Mind is no longer identified with because I the true identity observe that I am aware that I am neither knowing nor unknowing. I am aware that I am aware. It is also interesting how thoughts appear to be aware of I am, yet that is all thoughts are: conscious of I. I observe the wonderous impermanence of form say no more than "Hello, I. No, not this. I am". Interestingly, I am neither beginning nor am I ending! A definition of sadness; to fear and desire leaving and remaining. I am neither less than now nor am I more than now; the definition of guilt! I am beyond the fear and desire of opposing and posing of knowing and unknowing! All this I observe to be Ego Sign. A fictional label of conscious thought that mind made up to give up to that which is real. I observe all form as the living symbol that represents I am, and that form can only reflect that it is because I am that I am. All this is just meaningless form. Are these words on the screen aware of I the reader? Am I the person really aware of I am? There is no answer to be had from nothing other than I am aware of nothing. This is the null and void true nature of form. Form is not really there. Form is a reflection of the formless aspect of I. Form is I am that is aware that I am not. So what is form? It is. What am I? I am. What does all this say and mean? Nothing. Because form is nothing, yet even form is conscious of I am, because I am all that is real. I am that I am. I am...silence...stillness...presence...I am...

"I know that I know nothing". Is it ignorance or is it wisdom? Ithink it is profound wisdom. In other words, there is no "me" there is no one here to know anything. There are only responses to the questions coming out of nowhere. Isn't this bloody amazing? This is precisely what we're looking for. But thought interferes and says don't go to the unknown, it's to dangerous, stay in the known, that's where the safety is. Hence human dilemma.

So Socrates was building the plane, while he was flying it …..and he as the philosophical pilot, the questioning passenger and the plane as the vehicle of their combined thought processes, through the journey of their conversation, all arrived together at their destination , the answer. Just as an egg does not know if it will become a chicken or a Turtle, and a caterpillar has no clue until it becomes a comatose chrysalis that it will morph into a butterfly, so too Socrates did not know he knew what he knew… when the question is asked, the teacher will appear.

Knowing that one knows nothing is the essence of wisdom. Among other reasons, the first is that you cannot prove the existence of anything beyond your own thoughts. The world APPEARS to be a real, shared experience by many different types of intelligent beings, but it's not actually provable. You can only always fall back on Descartes' "I think, therefore I am." When you really grasp the essence of this truth it becomes easier to think of the omnipotent "I AM" which I believe to be the essence of all things, and of which we human beings and our world and universe, are simply a part. When you connect to the stillness behind your thoughts you may perceive the persistent "I AM." Naturally, speaking of existence in this way begins to feel like a truthful, fruity word salad, but such is the imprecise beauty of language itself, which cannot fully capture the concept. But when you know, then You Know. :->

This video is erroneous Professor Tolle. Plato & Socrates were VERY pious. Their lives revolved around intellectual virtue founded through God. That was a time of Utopia and enlightenment for human beings. Humans read books to acquire some sense of perspective in metaphysics and the ontological state of being. However, "real" knowledge can ONLY come from God. This was a time where the Gods and Goddesses were blessed with "Divine Enrichment." These omnipotent beings NEVER went away. Human Beings swayed away from these beings and turned to ONE God, that being "Yahweh", the Father of Yeshua (Pbuh). However, trillions of higher beings in this universe have come from God, not only Jesus. The enrichment and substance one acquires from life must correlate to a higher purpose. I still do my prayers and blessings for the Gods & Goddesses but I am an Alien Being. This is the reason Ontario, Canada is no different than Utopia. The people may be absolute garbage but Water, Earth, Fire, and Air are in complete balance in Ontario. Look at what just happened to New York & New Jersey. What about all the wildfires in the entire world? The United Kingdom is cursed by God because they desecrated "Holy Land" at Stonehenge. Who is the perfect human for God? Captain Katherine Janeway of the "Starship Voyager." She isn't a pious woman but has a great deal of respect for ALL "Alien Religions." To deny the Gods & Goddesses is to deny God altogether.

@@marvelfan9550 Oh man. And all this time I thought I was about to get raptured. Thanks for clarifying. Lol! John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Let me break this down as I see it. This teacher has just got his information from Wikipedia. For what purpose. I see, this teacher knows better than Socrates, there is a superiority complex at play here. This is typical from many teachers who claim to know what you are thinking. Proof of that is, quote; " most humans go through life only knowing themselves". Quote; " Socrates said", how does anyone know what Socrates said when he authored nothing, it is only hear say. This teacher prefers Socrates going into that state of not knowing rather than from already having accumulated knowledge. So hear say said Socrates received council from a divine voice. And surprise surprise, this teacher knows, quote: " they don't see the depths out of which his thinking actually came", by saying conceptualization and non conceptualization is in everyone. Socrates did not have a clue about the physical source within him that formed the intelligent species nor how that physical source within derived and obtain his imprinted knowledge, so naturally Socrates would say he receives council from a divine source, Socrates can be excused, but ,this teacher cannot be excused for not knowing how that ,our, physical source within derived and instead he offered a pathetic explanation of the physical source within is conceptualisation and non conceptualisation, verifiable! Hello! you cant have consciousness without a physical source to form form first.
