    Hello. An outing into the bush helping a friend in need with some "die-rectional" felling. "Die" in the sense that if things go wrong, my name is Mudd and Scott has extra work on his hands. And yes, took full advantage of throwing my NBFF under the bus! It's clear that this video has garnered some off color comments. It's abundantly clear that the "wood" be pundits are completely clueless. It is to bad there isn't an actual fallers IQ test that has to be passed before a viewer is able to comment on the related videos. We get a glimpse of some of the epic fail participants below. Some people's kids.... Thanks for watching.

    What is the purpose of starting the back cut prior to doing your face cut? I have always done the face cut first and then pretty well don't go to the face side of the tree once I've started my back cut. I know there are always exceptions to the rule of course. It didn't appear to have a real sever back lean, I know camera can be misleading. My only thought was maybe to be able to cut in enough to palm your wedges while utilizing the face of the tree to support it from closing the gap and pinching your saw before you had enough to get the wedges started. Just curious, I'm no professional but I always like to put some knowledge in my belt.

    I had responded to another viewer - Gigi Mayer - thinking there was also confusion. Here is a copy - Hello. Thinking the translation might have yielded a glitch in thought... On the tree that leaned the wrong way, the backcut was put in 1st. This allows for the wedge to be put in - which keeps the tree from "sagging" any further the wrong way. Which can be used as the backcut goes in deeper as well. This makes it easier to force into the shot with wedging once the face is put in. Partially as well, the backcut went in 1st. because I had no idea how long the tree was dead - which will directly affect the integrity of the wood at the stump. That's the short story... I surely hope you paid no attention the Joe Young misguided rant - he's completely clueless. Thanks for watching.

    Commonly done when the tree is a back leaner or the heartwood is questionable. Getting a wedge back there keeps the tree from setting backward and closing the back cut. Bassackwards it is not

    Hallo.

    Lots of fallers in Idaho and Montana run the half wrap handlebars in highlead ground. Tree lengthing. You back bar a lot and the stumps aren’t as pretty, but I think they’re faster for tree lengthing.

  • @hotsaws101

    @hotsaws101

    Жыл бұрын

    I've been in Montana. A lot of the ground is rolling on the east side of the Bitterroot. On the West side there is a lot more steep ground but it not overly choppy. In the panhandle of Idaho there is some impressively steep areas. Also, not necessarily overly choppy. In essence, the ground tends to be longer than what is seen on the coast. I'd be using a wrap set of bars personally. If nothing more than the ease of working when the drive side is up. Back barring requires a lot of extra upper body strength. I'd hate to be backbarring on a steady diet of 2 & 3 footers. Although, that might be kind of an anomaly strip in the majority of Montana. Also, it might be faster using the up side of the bar for the 1st. three days. But,,, then Thursday comes around.. At least for me. Everyone has their style. Lord knows mine gets it's fair share of thumbs down by the misguided... If using the backside of the chain works for the best for you, then by all means run with it! Keep in mind the chain isn't designed to push either. They don't perform as well when " going against the grain". Thanks for watching.

    The string trick. I would like to know how and the theory behind using it. I have over 40 years of cutting and we never see, or I have never seen this. I have many chainsaw courses and refresher courses but no string trick. What am I missing? Also just wondering if you time your wedge strikes with the movement of the tree top?

  • @hotsaws101

    @hotsaws101

    3 жыл бұрын

    Green- Zone hi. I am using a plumb line to assess the lean, bole weight, limb weight etc. of the tree. In the construction world, carpenters will use a plumb bob to get the initial wall straight, or plumb. Similar concept here. Also, it is impossible to fall super tall timber without a plumb line. Well, if I don't want to beating my brains out all day anyway. I do try and get into a rhythm and "work" the cadence that the top will get into after a few "pounds" on the wedges. This was a little tree, although it did not give up without a fight. It's much more important on big/tall trees. I do the same thing (at least attempt to) while jacking. Thanks for watching.

  • @alexcarr8503

    @alexcarr8503

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@hotsaws101 thanks, As a general rule I have a fairly good eye to see the lean, knowing which way the tree will go. I was better when I was cutting a hundred trees a day. Now that is here in the east. This would be cutting white birch, Red Maple and black and red spruce. Those are nothing like you have there. Is there a rule of thumb to consider that lean and determine where the tree will hit the ground. Now that I am mostly working around houses I am more interested in presision falling. On hitting the mark everytime. Side leans make me guess. I do think the plumb bob could help with this if I knew what I was doing. To be a certified faller here you only need to be within so many degrees of center. Either 5° or 10. Can't remember. Looking for better presision. Like on the money everytime.

  • @hotsaws101

    @hotsaws101

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Alex Carr hi. When you slide up to a tree that is 8 or 10' and that is 250' tall, you had better know where it is leaning "onest" sockin' in the deck for the face lest you get into real trouble. That is where the plumb comes in. I've never seen where a guy can fell big tall Redwood trees without one. I always called it an optical delusion. With the way the bark grows you'd swear it is leaning "out that way". Put the plumb line on it and low & behold it is NOT leaning "out that way", lol. Just a foot or two of back lean on a tree that is 200/250' tall can be a LOT of lifting to get it back the vertical. Usually it is compounded by limb weight. Gravity (hill steepness) plays a role also. I want to know what I'm up against initially. This allows for a "preemptive strike", if necessary, on my part. Thanks for watching.

    Robert hi. Glad you asked. Because I cut low stumps. Been doing it since '76. I cut down a tree on the edge of the landing that the loader operator was banging the counter weight on. Low & behold, after a few passes he was dragging the underbelly on the stump already. Had to then lower it - which then required excavation. Additionally, I will break less wood when the stumps are lower. Because, well,,, because no matter how great a guy thinks he is at felling timber, he is going to be "hittin" a stump every once and awhile. At least out on the West Coast anyway. Your going to slab less wood also. The slabbing will be less severe when the stumps are lower when it does happen - because that will be happening as well. And of course, there is the possibility the Scott wanted a low stump... This is because there were to be trees folded in from above and to the left of the lay later on. Not sure how, but, you "musta" missed the boot @ 4:27 sampling the "dirt". It was pine needle buildup, not terra firma. Duff I call it. On a personal note, I wish more commenters were also creators. They would find it doesn't always look the same through a lens/monitor. That is why you will never find an "off color" comment made by the guy in this video on what someone else is doing. After having filmed and viewed a multitude of videos, going into the third decade now, I know that it never looks exactly the same as is does standing there. What they would also find - that no matter how great of a faller they presume themselves to be, there WILL ALWAYS be those that are going to armchair critique with the wodda, shudda, cudda on proper this, that, whatever. I'm going to default beck to the 4th thought and adding in, unless a guy is stand right there the entire scope & parameters are not fully grasped. In the end, here was no "autopilot" going on here. Thanks for watching.

    @@hotsaws101 great video as usual. Have you had opportunity to cut any more trees with a 7310 that's had a dozen tanks run through it already as some here are commenting that's when they come to life?
