Echo Chamber - 27th DWFLA: In Conversation With Phillip Gladkov about 'Story of the Sun'

Фильм және анимация

'Story Of The Sun' is written & directed by Phillip Gladkov
SYNOPSIS
This is the first stop-motion animation in the world made entirely from birch bark. It shares the tale of how the first humans discovered fire, changing the world forever. It’s especially meaningful that this film is made from birch bark-a material used for starting fires since the Neanderthal era.
It's a movie for both children and adults, and filled with humor, valuable lessons, and emotionally touching moments.
CONVERSATION
There are so many talking points when it comes to 'Story Of The Sun'. The fact it’s the first film entirely made using birch bark...interesting! It’s Phillip Gladkov's first animation project, again...interesting! However, the REALLY interesting thing with the film, is within Philip's director's statement:
"my goal is to hold a mirror to humanity and ask crucial questions: 'How do we want to interact with the world?' & 'How can we live more in balance with the natural world?'
The narrative is engaging, with skilfully crafted visuals, making it enjoyable for adults, while its simplicity ensures that children can understand and retain its moral lessons."
A lot of the time, these type of lofty goals can be straight hyperbole, Not here though, as this film really does tap into that folklorian ability to channel poignancy & emotions for adults and children alike.
When talking with Philip, something that jumps out straight away is his thoughtfulness and introspection. You can see he’s not just making things for the sake of making things, he clearly has a lot to say and he’s carrying a lot in his heart and head that he wants to get out to the world.
The discussion gets into sustainability, climate change, and the actual drivers and issues that are preventing significant improvements. Along with talk about making the film, how the story was birthed, the choice to use birch bark and animation. We touch upon collaboration and the people who came together to help make the film. Be it Tsukuru Fors compelling narration, Lionel Cohen's immersive score, or the work from the films producers, Berman Fenelus, and Carmen Escobar Whitaker, who happens to be Phillip's girlfriend. This may seem beside the point, BUT, the fact that they can work together and collaborate in this kind of way speaks volumes. It’s not surprising though, as Philip clearly carries consideration, openness, and creativity with him throughout whatever he does.
In 7 minutes, 'Story Of The Sun' embeds itself into your soul, and hearing Phillip talk about it will have you ready to entrust your heart to all his future work!!!
