SYNOPSIS
A tragic true story that reveals the mental health epidemic in America. This is a dramatic and powerful view of the toll that bipolarism takes on one woman’s (Michelle Cody White) life and the family (Randall Scott White) she leaves behind. With over a decade of home videos, diaries and social media, Oscar -winning director, Bill Guttentag, stitches together the tragic story and the mystery behind it.
CONVERSATION
A lot of the times, when covering a documentary, you speak with the director, someone who is close to the subject, but not immersed in it. So when plans changed and Randall Scott White came through with Jennifer Hutchins, everything pivots.
You might go why, well, 'Spyral' is a really raw look at the lives of Randall and his late wife Michelle Cody White. Which is definitely a huge plus, as it's not trying to colour your perception on things. This can alter a conversation, though. Sometimes questions are off the table and things are just meant to be puff. However, this was NOT the case, as with the documentary, Randall was completely open and honest about his experience. The mistakes made, the choice & reasons to film everything, and then to bring it to the world and the repercussions of this. You can really see the journey and evolution he has been on, and he graciously talks about his life now and how things have shaped his relationships with his daughter and new wife.
Having Jennifer in the room, was also really important! As it gave an insight into the care of the approach, the steps of research and validating information to ensure it's a rounded, warts and all view. Jennifer also talks about after care, and the potential as a resource and discussion starter, this documentary has. This may have been unexpected, but it was a really thought provoking experience!!!
