For context: The contract with Echidna would've been an absolute nightmare. She pretty much wanted to turn Subaru's life into what was going to be essentially her videogame. With Subaru as her "player character". Just so she could have a way to interact with the real world (because she's dead) and satisfy her own curiosity for the things that happen in the world and killing Subaru in the process as many times as she wanted until she accomplished Subaru's goal no matter to what monstrous scenarios and horrible deaths she would have to put Subaru into. That's why the line "I will help you to reach your goal...in the end" was so important. Because she was going to "help" Subaru...eventually. A.k.a When she finally could feel that her curiosity for the world was satisfied. Which in all honesty was probably never. In fact, in the route where Subaru does accepts Echidna's deal, she forces Subaru to die in horrific ways and reset 100 MILLION times (not even joking, that's the number of deaths stated in the "IF" novel). And as a result, Subaru absolutely lost any sense of value for his own life to the point he uses return by death for even the most trivial and meaningless things and hates Echidna above everything else. The worst part part is that their contract states that Echidna will help Subaru reach the goal he wants but after 100 million deaths Subaru no longer wants anything. So she doesn't really have to help him reach anything. Which means that Echidna can keep using Subaru as she pleases because he still has to fulfill his (endless) part of the deal. Which is basically an eternity of dying to satisfy Echidna's endless search for knowledge through many multiple scenarios. And this is because Echidna is very weird. She pretty much sees causing despair as a form of love. Which explains what she does to Subaru in that route and also what he did to Beatrice. She pretty much told her to wait for "that person" just because she wanted to know what will happen if she did that. The desire to know the answer to that single question is what caused Betty's 400 years of suffering. Regardless of how much time Beatrice would have to wait genuinely believing that someone was going to appear and be "that person".

Fun fact: Reinhard can only draw his dragon sword if the sword deems the enemy "worthy," something or someone that can threaten the whole world. Puck is one of the rare enemies the sword recognize as "worthy".

Emilia was abandoned by both Puck and Subaru and forced to do the trial over and over by Roswall, that is why her mind broke and she became crazy in that timeline. I've not read the LN, but having read so many comments under Re:Zero youtube reactions, I know such type of additional information that the second season cut.

Also for 11:28 she wasn’t possessed or anything, what happened is that the snow started, people assumed it was emilia making it snow, then they started ganging up on her so emilia attempted to do the trial over and over again for a while. so all of that coupled with the fact that literally no one was by her side (because puck made emilia super dependent on him) caused her mind to break and just regress basically.

i wouldn’t say it’s a step back for subaru at all, it’s very in character for him actually. she’s still a kid even if she is evil, and subaru wouldn’t wanna see a kid die

Echidna would be the worst choice. She said she wouldn't make Subaru choose to use his RTD... but that us exactly what she wants of him; to pursue endless possibilities and choose to reset as often as possible to see those possibilities laid out. Think about what that would do to Subaru... to anybody! Endless dying and restarting, Endless self-sacrifice until there is nothing human left. Subaru would be trapped for eternity, always questioning and never moving forward. Always reliant upon the gift from the Witch of Envy, the one Witch Echidna HATES. The one thing in this world that Echidna doesn't want to know about. Subaru would be Echidna's tool, offering him all that she has because she doesn't love him, is INCAPABLE of loving him, all to satisfy her curiosity. It would be a never-ending hell, disguised as assistance.

"Can Subaru get Beako as his spirit?" Remember in season 1, in the episode where he jumped off the cliff. Beako actually made a contract with Subaru back then in order to protect him. It's easly overlooked but she already made the choice once. Will she make it again? Who knows🤷‍♂

Re zero web novel version : After Subaru and Beako escaped in this scene 6:52, Subaru saw Petra like this... Elsa fr done Petra dirty -Petra was atop the dining table, set alongside the tableware. The white tablecloth seeps with a red stain, the body of a collapsed Petra at its centre. Time has already passed, with the shade of shed blood shifting soon to dark rust, the scene intensifying in its morose air. Subaru: “Peh, trra...” Faltering, unsteady steps lead Subaru to the table. Petra lies face-up in the middle. Frozen firm on her loveable face is an expression of agony, tears and dread, her eyes wide open in despair of what she last saw. Blood leaks from the corners of her open mouth, the lethal blow of course being the slash of the deep knife wound splitting her belly. That maid outfit she had sweetly, fairylike with skirt billowing, shown to Subaru-from beneath its breast to its gut there rips a straight slice, the spilled blood and guts further lightening the body of the little girl.

The reason Elsa slashed Subaru’s eye is because Elsa hated the look in Subaru’s eyes. When she looks at Subaru’s eyes she seesthat Subaru was given up on life and already started planning ahead of his death.(He was thinking that was the end for this loop and already started planning for the next loop) It’s was an abhorent way of thinking that even Elsa was disgusted. From Elsa’s perspective Subaru was looking for a future that was not even there. Emilia didn’t get possessed by Satella. She was mindbroken from being alone and going through the trials multiple times. Without Puck or Subaru, She was swallowed in her trauma without any pillar in her life. Roswaal doesn’t actually know about Return by Death. The tome of wisdom only told Roswaal that Subaru has the ability to “Redo” things. So Roswaal thinks Subaru can loop back with his will. He doesn’t know about the conditions(Dying). That’s why Roswaal beat the hell out of Subaru, he tried Subaru to loop back with force. Also the way Subaru escaped from the great rabbit was cut in the anime, Subaru used the Ryuzu clones as suicide bombers while he tried to get back to Emilia. While he was trying to get back to Emilia he saw the church that the villagers were staying on fire. Then Subaru had come to conclusion that the Villagers have chosed to burn alive than get eaten alive by the rabbits. It was a mass suicide. Also the ending was Subaru’s first ever kiss in his life…

This also connects to she saying that she doesn't like the person that hired her (roswaal) in one of the re zero break times and to garfield saying that Subaru's eyes are like those of Roswaal. Basically, foreshadowing to Roswaal and Subaru having a similar way of thinking about dead.

What I like about Echidna is that shes not pure evil here, shes like the embodiment of greed so it isnt done with malice but rather pure curiosity like Subaru says. The other thing is that Subaru and Echidna are completely opposed in their ideals. Subaru is someone who cannot sacrifice others, he has to save people. Echidna however will sacrifice whatever she wants to achieve her goals. Theres more to it, Subaru imo has to be a hero. If he was willing to sacrifice, he would go down a slippery slope. His power is insane, if he really was willing to sacrifice anything he could do and destroy anything he wanted. Subaru has to he humble, he has to save others and do whatever he can for a good future. His psyche and mentality are dependent on it. He needs to he a hero to save himself as well. Theres also some parallels to his mom strangely enough, Subarus mom taught him that the beginning and middle dont matter, but the end. Echidna doesn’t care about what she has to do, as long as it gets results. Shes bastardizes the very ideal his mom taught him. Roswaal is the other side, Subarus father never forced him to do anything. He always gave Subaru a choice. To the point where even school was a choice for him. Roswaal however will FORCE Subaru to be just like him.

Fun fact: the voice actress for Echidna did that monologue in one take!

I love that Prez stayed the course on the Echidna loyalty. People think that ep12 will dissuade fans, but I haven't seen ONE person turn away from the cult of Echidna. She's just too good

MICROWAVE ECHIDNA IS HERE!! That Naruto opening is properly rated, just people forget cuz old & we keep getting new bangers to occupy our mind. Beako's door crossing gets more detailed along with her sad back story. Emilia might be on the verge of possession maybe? Not just her losing her mind. (i think) Roswaal knows about the fact Subaru can restart, he just doesn't know how so he just beats subaru to do it & doesn't wanna kill him for that reason, not knowing that his death is what triggers the ability. Also remember the kiss of Emilia at the end. More context incoming at the very end of season 2. Makes the scene way darker. Subaru taking echidna's contract is explored in Greed IF

Dunno if someone already said this on yt or patreon but: Echidna in the novels clarified that the second trial glitched for him, because of his Authority, he has multiple "presents" and the second trial kept looping through his iterations, making him experience all of those deaths again.

There is an official version of an "if" if he had chosen Echidna and it was the worst decision for Subaru because it represented dying more than 100 million times to achieve his goals thus losing his soul and desire to live. A nightmare. It is called "kasaneru if" and is written by the same author

“There’s a million Emilia’s out there” Technically Emilia is the only girl that he’s liked that hasn’t killed or wanted him dead. Echidna’s whole goal is to have him kill himself constantly, and watch everyone else die.

getting into a contract with echidna is not good at alll for subaru 😭 a lot of ppl didn’t really understand but basically, what echidna was saying is that she will most definitely guide him to the best possible future but at the cost of subaru dying millions and millions of times to satisfy her greed it’s why the witch of sloth said “this won’t be the promise you always precede with ‘in the end…’ would it?”which means that echidna is saying something like “i will guide you to the best possible future … in the end!”

Echidna voice actress said all that without any pause, lol; Basically, the bad part of the contract is that Subaru will be satisfied in some point, but Echidina not

A comment above said that he didn't want to kill them since he was scared that killing the enemy would result in the checkpoint changing (since with no enemies he would be safe and in no danger of dying) and him not being able to save anyone. I don't know if its true but it makes sense to me.
