In my opinion the calculated shipping still doesn't take the fact that you have to pay for a box and bubble wrap and tape and you have to pay for your time to ship it so the small discount ebay gives you compared to what they charges means you would lose money. They also charge fees on the shipping you get from the customer. Customers think shipping is cheap or free thanks to amazon. Amazon has their own fleet of vehicles and planes. eBay doesn't.

100% been doing Calculated on items over 1lbs for 25 years as a full time reseller LOOK if a buyer wants an item bad enough they will buy it NO Matter the price of the item OR the shipping cost! look ALL business Pass the Cost off to who???? the customer we are most platforms Customers (with the accepting of maybe amazon) how do those platforms pass the cost on they do it by INCREASING fees on us the customer!! so how do we combat the Postage rate increases (now 3 times a year pre covid it was at the most twice a year) we do it by using Calculated shipping On items over 1lbs WE PASS the shipping increases onto the buyer (our customer) hey if the platforms can do it to us and we just roll over and accept it which we all do then the buyers will do that regarding SHIPPING Period end of story. and your absolutely right the Buyers closer to YOU will have a better rate then Buyers Further away but again IF that buyer Really wants your item (and hopefully there are not many others available and you have great pictures and a great rating and you have been selling WAY longer then the other sellers) Shipping price will NOT matter that buyer will buy from you even if your IN NY and there in CA. ONLY why Flat Rate shipping works is on items Under 1lbs (these items only go based on Weight not dimensions unless there over 15" they get a surcharge) most Ground Advantage items under 1lbs will ship between $4 something (1oz) and $6.33 (16oz) another way to keep money in your business regarding shipping is NOT to give your shipping discount to the buyer we need to stop babying buyers we need to start to educate them as to what RETAIL shipping actually costs especially so when they go to ship something they are not sticker shocked when the clerk tells them how much it is to ship a 24x24x12 box that weights 30lbs from NY to CA which is well over $100 RETAIL rate we need to start to train buyers by charging them the RETAIL rate so they can expect that when they ship there own items i have been behind everyday citizens almost going postal about how much the shipping is im like thinking in my head where have you been for the last 20 plus years! Its 100% called the amazon affect may everyday citizens in the U.S. except it to be the AMAZON way (even it its not purchased on amazon or from amazon) and that is either FREE or next TO nothing shipping. Amazon wants to give free or crazy cheap shipping great let them do that Most stuff that is on eBay or any other platform YOU CANT FIND OR GET on amazon so buyers has to either Pony up and PAY or find it elsewhere

I changed to calculated about 2 years ago. The reduced stress is enough for me to switch. Passing the discount on to the buyer doesn't make sense for the majority of sellers, unless you're a massive volume seller of the same thing continuously . Packing supplies, boxes, gas to the p.o., I need every dime to make any profits with the way fees are so insane. That $2 means nothing to your random buyer, but everything to me. Especially if what you sell doesn't make for repeat customers. If everything is a one off, I'm not "buying" myself any repeat customers.

Hi Kevin! I am Steven (the Rams pennant buyer). I have been selling on eBay since the year 2000, and full time since 2005. Of course, I have seen many postal rate increases. It has helped in preparation of absorbing these constant rate increases by charging about 20% more on flat rate shipping when I list a product for sale (I only do flat rate shipping, and occasionally free shipping), so when the rate increases hit it doesn't affect me so drastically, and I don't have to scramble and increase my shipping charges. I will then start gradually increasing my flat rate charges as I create new listings. Best wishes! -Steven

I've always done the discounted calculated shipping on a majority of my items but also tack on a handling fee to cover expenses. Also tend to go a little higher in weight to cover possible unforeseens when it comes time to packaging. However, I am watching the rise in costs for sure and for those small percentage of items that are low dollar in my store, I'm probably going to consider much more doing domestic free shipping on them and bake the cost into the price. I have already started using the UPS Saver more often now to save a few cents as I'm lucky enough to live near a hub to drop stuff off. But I am wondering how far the cost of shipping can go up before it does become unfeasible for smaller sellers. I also think the cost of shipping has effected my buying as well. Buying less, being more picky based on possible ROI. Which may be a good thing as I feel I'm buying less "junk" and am still finding enough things to keep me busy selling.

@@bennystratton7734Eventually resellers will actually not have a choice but to do that. With a such low barrier of entry into the resale industry, you can not expect these people to be business savvy. I can tell you that more and more people are shopping online than ever as it is frankly a pain in the ass to drive to the store only to find out they do not carry what you need. Convenience cost money, and resellers need to start thinking like this. Buyers might whine, but it's not like they can go to Wallmart lol so WTF are these sellers doing 😅 and why are they all acting broke, and desperate. It is because they do not know the market, they are just Google lens experts at best "Low Entry" can not see the opportunity right in front of their face, it's just " I got the best deal on the internet" LMFAO they are running a going out of business slowly sale 🤣

I chose my niche - paper ephemera and books - because of the way the items ship as well as because that is where my knowledge is. What the changes mean to me is that I now bundle pretty much everything that sells for under $10 rather than selling by the piece. The buyer gets more bang for their shipping buck and I move more low cost items. I will lose buyers if they only want that ONE thing, but if they shop around they will see I'm competitive plus they get something extra. The USPS is a service provided by the US Government. It was never set up as a business, never meant to be run like one until someone got it in their heads that they wanted to cut their budget. It will ALWAYS be in the red. Either the government allots more money to this service or it will have to be privatized. No way will it ever get the money it needs until people value it more and many younger folks don't since they live in the digital world. They will never know what they are missing by not having a letter from a loved one long gone to hold onto and re-read for the rest of their lives. Email just isn't the same.

for paper ephemera and books you can just do Flat rate shipping meaning you just charge ONE shipping price no matter if the buyer buys one book or 100 books same with paper (i sell all kinds of paper ephemera) i do a $6 flat shipping i have orders with 10 items some with 20 items if the order is over $75 it ships free especially items under 1lbs for example say a buyer buys 10 post cards for $3.99 each that is $39.99 plus on shipping charge of $6 and it actually looks better then sellers selling the same post cards wanting say $5.99 free shipping if that buyer were to put those 10 in there cart it would come to $59.99 who is that buyer going t buy from yep there going to buy from me at $39.99 plus $6 shipping not the $59.99

That’s what I did; I raised each of my flat rate prices of 75c or $1. I am testing out the other categories I have with shipping such as flat rate priority padded envelops. I want to see how much more it will cost. I use a lot of these to ship shoes and different items. I may do like you and transfer a bunch of my flat rates to calculated shipping. Most of what I sell is flat rate shipping added on. I never include shipping in my prices because I send out a lot of offers and do not want to cutting my prices when I would have to pay for shipping as well. I am not happy about this change…! For sure. I think it’s going to negatively affect our sales. We shall see. Thanks for the update and videos😊

If the shipping cost to the buyer is significantly different after purchase, I contact the buyer and ask them to let me know when they receive it and I will refund some of the overage on shipping. I use calculated for most, but did start charging a flat rate for some 2 and 3 lb items, but now I'll have to increase those as well. The cost of tape and shipping boxes in the last couple years has skyrocketed, and I have added 5% promoted to TRY to get more sales, so that is also on the tax and shipping. I liked when priority was closer to ground advantage and we could use more of their free supplies. I sell a lot of toys, and I tried the free shipping on the smalls, (think barbie shoes or a pair of doll shoes) and then I had people offering me 5.00 which basically covered just the shipping. I had more than one person tell me they did not believe a pair of doll shoes is more than a couple dollars to ship, so I took the free shipping off because people didn't realize in the 10.00 free shipping, almost half of that was actually shipping. I wish USPS had a tiny cubic rate for like a 4x4x4 box or poly mailer under 4oz. The shipping on the smalls really hurts.

New to reselling here, 2-3 months in. I've been focusing on some of the easier things I'm more comfortable with which is video games, collectibles & action figures, general merch of anything new in box or new open box items. Generally I have about 50 items on ebay (only place I sell) any given time. I source 98% of my items from Garage Sales and very few from Estate Sales/Buy Trade Social media groups. The first month I started out really strong making over $500 in a single month. I've taken those profits and put it back into my buying base and these last two months I've seen a really big slow down despite gradually increasing my total listings to well over 120 total items. I source all my items on Thurs & Sat and list my new items on Sunday every week for the past 3 months. I'm not sure what to do to help continue the selling momentum. I'm quickly running out of room to store my resell inventory and I'm not sure what to do. How can I sell items quicker and still manage to keep my reseller side gig profitable?

In the old days I used calculated only and kept the discount. Even in the old days that discount was what kept the fees from killing me, and when the USPS raised rates (as usual) it at least kept bad surprises to a minimum. Now it has to be pricing some sellers out of the market; their items sell at an expected price, shipping included, and the bottom line on those items is going too high to make them viable. Lower-priced items aren't worth it unless they're bundled; they never were unless you sold mass quantity but it's worse now.. I only still send Christmas cards because I sometimes find Forever stamps at estate sales for under the current postage rate. Otherwise I'd be posting on Facebook like everyone else. The USPS is pricing themselves out of business. My hunch is they actually know it, or the savvy types do, but don't have a viable alternative.

I do calculated shipping, plus 50 cents extra for domestic and a buck for international. I'm finding it a lot easier than flat rate or free shipping. I don't sell too many items under 40 bucks and I do sell many that are over 100 so I haven't had the issue of people paying the same for shipping as they do for the item, but as a buyer I understand it. If I sold more items under 15 dollars I would definitely consider free shipping on just those items. I tried free shipping for a couple months and took such a beating that I will never do that again. I definitely wouldn't try it again at this point as free shipping requires the seller to have a very good idea of what things will cost to ship beforehand, which is very hard to do during these periods when rates change. I find offering free returns, rather than free shipping, has been the best way to keep my sales consistent.

It's a horrible category for a small seller honestly. The handling fee has always felt "sneaky" to me. Just my opinion. I wouldn't mind the PO's price hikes if it was "when needed". They are now on a 3X a year schedule of seemingly random increases. I "split" the shipping with the buyer on many items now. Not sure the buyer understands this, but they do if they've paid counter rates recently!

Prices are going to get insane.
