15% fees on selling clothing is to high. It is not worth it anymore. On a promoted add ebay makes more money than I do. Sometimes ebay makes more money than I do on a standard sale.

Ive sold on ebay since 2003 and the last 3 years have been my worst ever sales. Pathetic! Between my ebay store fee and their fees i have lost money almost every month for 3 years.

@@TheOneTheOnlyToast oh I feel what you're saying. It's my only source of income right now and it's not much of an income. Got so much time invested in the 4000 auctions listed over 16 years ... Hard to walk away. Gotta get some variety and list other stuff I think.

They already pass on the processing fees to sellers. They are just tired of covering the extra 1% for American Express. It's another way for them to increase margins for wall street without growing the customer base.

Notice that the fees are higher for items that cost less to ship. Because eBay charges FVFs on shipping costs, they make up the difference elsewhere.

Kevin! I had an American Express card back in the late 90s early 2000s, and I found out quick several places wouldn't even take it as payment. Convince stores, half the stores in the mall,most gas stations all would say oh sorry we don't take American Express. When I inquired as to why they all said they are charging 3x what the other cards charge in fees ,so I get it with American Express. I got rid of tat card fast

I wish we could all avoid selling online, no matter how convenient.

and eBay is large enough to be their own credit card processor, many small to mid sized businesses have to pay extra percentages to have a credit card processor company

There's an element of "serves you right!" about eBay complaining about fees...except that they'll be going after sellers' wallets, even if they drop AMEX. Some sellers have already hit the tipping point and bailed, and I don't think eBay can increase them much more before hitting the downward side of the Diminishing Returns bell curve. If they haven't already. (i.e. more and more work for less and less output.) Lots of retailers are running into it now. They increase prices to offset thievery, and honest consumers then either go elsewhere or resort to thievery themselves when they can no longer afford to use honest means to obtain necessities. PS - when I sold, the only shipping supplies I paid much for were the padded tyvek mailers and small boxes I could get cheap/free with my store discount. Interior packing boxes came from tag and rummage sales for pennies, when I wasn't using plastic Easter eggs for really small stuff. Packed with tissue paper and taped at the seam. Super light and tough. Those were free sometimes. Then again, most things I shipped were 4 ounces or less packed so YMMV.

eBay could of added the transaction fee for the credit card to the buyer when the seller sells something. If the buyer wants to accept it then can buy from that seller.

I used to manage a large off priced discount chain store. We would have folks ask if we could save bubble wrap or other protective shipping materials for them. Folks also request boxes. If resellers contact local retailers and set up a consistent save and supply deal, it’s a win/win. Less trash in the landfill. It’s all free to the person asking! Yo just have to make sure to pick up the materials as agreed upon.

I walked into a large off-priced discount store + asked if I could have the boxes etc on the floor. They said, “U can have all of ‘em + if I knew ahead of time, that u wanted them, I would’ve had all the ones in the back ready for u”. I was surprised that it was that easy.

I work in retail so there is an infinite amount of boxes for me to use and cut for my comic books...they even let me use an old guillotine paper cutter

My grandfather worked as an exec at a printing plant where he often would negotiate for fractions of cents per sqft of product. Fractions of cents that added up to hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of a year. To say that it’s wrong to negotiate with someone selling goods, no matter if it’s their own or a companies goods, is just ignorant of how commerce and businesses function. Negotiations happen every single day in every single corner of the world.

Your example holds for business transactions where both sides know the value of what they are dealing with and can make a fair judgement. Casual Yard sellers that don't know the value of what they are selling is different. If they give you a lowball price and you take it that's fine. But when you lowball them, knowing the true value, then you are morally wrong. If they don't care about the value and just want to get rid of stuff that's ok. There's difference between not knowing and not caring.

@@craigwinans1948 - Many people feel that once you set up as a seller to the general public, that goes out the window. If you set up as a seller, you are supposed to know what the items you are selling are worth. It's different if buyers approach someone who is not a seller, and offer to buy something.

I imagine the percentage of customers using American Express has dwindled because so many merchants in brick and mortar shops are either charging the fee to customers or declining the card. Our veterinarian charges a 3.5% fee for using it.

Due to high fees globally from Ebay Flutterby has downgraded to a small shop as from May 2024

I pay for almost not shipping supplies. My boxes are free and come from my daughters job, UPS and a local pet store that saves boxes for me. My tape is free with my eBay Store coupons. My packing item - bubble wrap, paper, peanuts, etc - I get for free from my daughters job and local pet store. I found the tape guns at St Vinney's for $1.00 each. I got a shipping scale, thermal printer, thermal stickers, etc free from a warehouse that went out of business. I got bubble mailers off of Temu. They work great. I keep my shipping supply cost as low as I can!

I just had a major score on packing paper. My friend is moving. Found someone on facebook giving away large moving boxes. Went down there with my truck and saw they were also giving away the packing material. Same packing paper I buy from Walmart. I easily got a few hundred dollars of packing paper. I'm going to be set for a while :)

I make my own boxes for odd sizes. I cut out of large boxes I gather such as tv, mirror, shower surroundsand grills for example. I use a straight edge to make my creases.

There's absolutely no reason to pay for boxes. I've been doing this for 8 years and have only had to buy one box for a guitar I shipped. I found a honey hole back then behind a plaza that has all the boxes I could ever need along with the stores plastic wrap and paper that are used by their shippers and they put these in clear trash bags for recycle. I know I've saved 2 or 3 thousand dollars during this time and It takes me less than 15 minutes to get what I need to ship for a month. Look for plazas that have stores like Dollar General and craft stores Like Michael's, Joann Fabric etc. There's also a Macy's and Shoe Carnival in my plaza that contribute along with a Chinese Restaurant that has medium to large sturdy boxes.

I remember when sellers would sell an item for $1 and $50 for shipping and pay about $2 in fees. Now you pay the fees on shipping and even ebay taxes collected.

What Mercari did was NOT put all fees on the buyer like they would like you to think. I no longer can transfer my money to my bank for free from my account after the sale money comes in. There is an automatic $2 fee. I'm talking about the 5 days wait for it to get to your bank, nothing rushed. So when you want to cash out of Mercari you actually have to pay them to do so. I can't figure out a way around it. The math on that depends on what you sell. I can only seem to sell cheap stuff on their sight nowadays. I would be willing to bet they are making loads of money on this.

At some point the only ways to grow income as a reseller is expand productions with employees, or become a content creator.

I buy online most of my house supplies and can goods, that packaging I can reuse for my shipping plus I do buy bubble mailers. Sometimes, I reuse an eBay bubble mailer but I don’t like doing that unless I ran out of my pretty color bubble bags.

I used to have one of those Case Logic cd cases! I'm sure its long, long gone now. And yes, it is ironic....

I suspect it's not just the additional point amex charges but also the generous chargeback protection it has that results in ebay eating a lot of chargebacks for its own seller protection policies.

Yeah, but most consumers use a diff payment platform for example PayPal, Shop, etc so they can still use Amex to pay for their purchases on eBay but going through PayPal, etc. I don’t think it’s going to make that big of a diff.

I've figured out where all the good cardboard dumpsters are. Some places get their merchandise mailed to them in much stronger boxes. Knowing what days the garbage company empties them is a good idea so you don't waste a trip. In my small town its the farm/hardware store and medical places that get the best boxes. They are almost always good strong boxes. But with medical boxes you need to cover up all the printing that's on the outside of the box before you mail it. So I do have to buy brown tape to block those out. Sometimes I just cut up strips of paper and use the clear tape to cover the printing. I don't think I've ever paid for a box in 20 plus years. Storing them sucks though. You need a shed or something.

medical places often get lots of like size boxes at one time and on a regular basis, that are perfect size for a lot of the stuff I mail.

Kevin, sorry this has nothing to do with your topic, but here is my question? Ive only been doing this for a couple of months, and i sold a Tommy Hilfiger purse.I live in a small town in Arkansas, I got all the different size boxes from USPS and I printed up the labe from Ebay and wen to post office to mail it and she said she could not accept the label on the USPS priority box. She wouldn't explain why? I had to put it in a poly bag with the same label. Do you know why they wouldn't take it? Thanks for any help

get my boxes from my part time job working a store and i get boxes of all sizes, that i would take home a few each time am in and i have never paid for any in the 3 years I've been reseller, how much I've saved doing this is a lot, and am at the point were am bulk stocking them, i should sell them on ebay 😅, some time i get bubble wrap too but that i do have to order from time to time

I think people really don't understand how important handling is. If you really think you need that extra handling fee just add it to the price. It's all added together anyways for the buyer but could give the impression that your shipping is too high to buyers or that you are sneaking in extra fees. And just use calculated shipping, no discount. That shipping discount you get helps cover handling and fees.

@@craigwinans1948 the mindset that shipping is not its own entity is, losing people money. The item you sell is your profit. Handling covers your service that you are providing like storage, materials, to ship, your time to package, etcetera. That service should be locked in on price and not calculated with the item that you're selling. I hope this makes sense

Ebay's FVF will be the same either way. If you have an example of adding handling without raising the overall price an makes you more money let me know.

Can't make this up. ENEMA MAN showed up. I unpack it and try to explain to my wife why I needed it, and cha-ching goes off. $95 pair of boots sell. But what Kevin didn't tell us is that when sourcing, you will be drawn to Tupperware. I came home with a pickle holder. Love ya Kevin!
