Also early play countering was brilliant to go to 6 cards. When you swung with Nami for 6k, I thought you could have played Makino and swung at Law with two 7k attacks so you have 6 cards again, Law ain't hurting you.

At 9:00 you end your turn and don't take your last life. I'm new and learning Whitebeard, are you required to take a life at the end of your turn or is his leader ability optional?

You’re required to take a life normally but when you drop Edward Newgate it prevents you from taking a life from card effect .
