    I’m Australian so we may pronounce this differently but we say ‘ky’ (as in sky), ‘ton’.....chiton..... their teeth are made of some of the hardest organic material known ..... when we collect them we use a screwdriver to pry them off and bring a strong spoon with a sharpened edge to shuck them as soon as you take them off the rocks, not bad to eat (cooked or raw), pretty good bait cause they don’t get torn off the hook easily. People use the armoured plates for jewellery

    I've always known chiton to be pronounced as Kaiten. Have never eaten them though. Not really something on my "things to try at least once" list.

  • @maico450
    @maico4502 жыл бұрын

    It is pronounced like this "kiton", the "ch" is a hard K sound and the "i" is a long vowel sound. The "ton" is just like the word ton as in a measurement of weight. On the Northern California Pacific coast, we have a species that can be quite large, upwards of a foot long, with an orange outer hide. We call them Gumboot Chitons. They live in rocky tide pools.

    Step #1 look around for other people gathering them. Step #2 ask more than one person about eating them. Step #3 invite the person that told you about them to join you for supper. I know how I am and if I could get someone to eat cow crap I would just to see their reaction. "Oh yeah, that's the best part of the cow and a renewable resource. If you can find some you'll love it, its in high demand".

    If they are anything like limpets in the UK, you have to get them first time before their defensive mechanism makes the cling on hard. We have a saying here, “cling on like a limpet”. A quick swipe with a rock is often best.

    Great video Kelly!!! I'm in Az along the Colorado River and the waverunner's rent for an outrageous amount in the summer because you have the river plus Lake Mead, Mohave and Havasu and we're inundate with Californians. Helpful hint in the summer we get 120°+ and fish with mackerel and anchovies but put dry ice on them to keep them frozen and you don't need alot and it'll last quite a few hours

    Hi Lauren you turn it on its back (we hold it in the palm of our hands) and use a small table knife or spoon to go around the meat where it's connected to the inside of shell and take it out. We use a spoon or a butter knife that's not so pointy or sharp. Once you get it out, clean it off on both sides and enjoy.

    I believe it is pronounced kite on. Good bait for the smaller species, the pink part. Some say it has aphrodisiac properties. When boiled, the resultant "water" when drank, can keep a guy up whole night. It is a mollusc. Related to conch, oysters, mussels. Barnacles are related to crabs. Have a Happy New Year Kelly, Lauren and Blue Gabe.

I was following Lauren for a while and stopped because of a colab she was doing with someone I didnt care for, but Im happy to say Im watching Lauren again on a regular basis. I sincerely hope that Lauren, Kelly, and Blue Gabe continue with future adventures together. You guys just seem to have a real genuine chemistry and friendship. Hey Gabe, see if you can get Lauren to try hunting for a collaboration episode. Its not for everybody, but theres only one way to find out. I remember when you helped Kellys interest in hunting recently. None of us were sure how that was going to turn out. But Kelly is a natural sports woman, and she seems to genuinely enjoy it. Maybe Lauren will, too. Just a suggestion....

    We used to cook Abalone often. To clean them, we cut the foot out from the underside. You trimmed the edges of the pyramid shaped muscle. We’d slice it thinly across the grain, pound it and fry in butter. Straight up incredible and I don’t see why a Chiton would be any different.

    You're using the wrong type of knife and it is a VERY dangerous practice to have in your hand unsheathed and crawling around rocks, one slip and STABBED! Consider using a chisel tipped divers knife or oyster shucking knife that you carry sheathed around your neck on a break away lanyard. Love your show and watch every one. Former military.

    In Trinidad & Tobago we call those "Pacro " real name is Chiton. We boil them with salt and spices. We also cook them in a curry coconut sauce.

    A oyster shucker knife would be perfect for un sticking these things!! Sharp flat pointy tip, but then thicker where the blade wont be as flexible as a filet style knife!

    Kelly still wants an Armadillo for a Pet. Hahaha! Its a giant roly-poly! Gabe just needs to get some roly-polys for her. Love the videos, the kids driving the wave runners is funny too.

    The CH is pronounced as K. Here in we cut the "foot", the suction cup part, off and eat that raw. Alternatively we sauté them in butter with garlic and habaneros, just like conch.

    Try Kiten as a pronunciation for the chiton. I read up on them. They are eaten by many local peoples both boiled and fried/raw. They are mentioned in one original peoples fishing treaty.

    On the left coast we say “Kai-ton”. Gastropoda mollusks like snails and abalone. You want an “abalone iron” to get them loose. Look up “gum boot chiton”, big as a boot sole.
