Eating high levels of ultra-processed foods linked with higher risk of death, study finds

Researchers tracking people's habits over 30 years found those who consumed more of certain ultra-processed foods had a slightly higher risk of death. Mingyang Song, the lead author of the study, joins CBS News to discuss his findings.

You know the sad thing is, most people want to be healthy but when you have inflation causing prices to skyrocket, it's not like you can afford the healthy foods over the ultra-processed foods. Cause the Ultra-Processed foods are usually cheaper foods compared to the healthy foods. So all I gotta say is if you want people to eat healthier make healthy food cheaper...

Healthy organic diets are much less expensive. The poor are less educated and know nothing of healthy diets; thus, they spend more of their food money on the junk food, the candy and doughnuts--all of the high fructose laden crap that keeps them addicted to junk food, needing to eat more and more of it and bloating all up with health-destroying visceral fat. So actually, a healthy diet is much cheaper.

This is part of the illusion of food marketing. Much of that expensive food that is marketed as "healthy" is just more processed food, *maybe* less processed. That said, go to the produce section, spend all your grocery money there on raw fruit, vegetables and produce. Most of what you spend in that case will be on meat, followed by dairy. Your food will be the least-processed of what is in the store and you will walk out with a much higher nutrient/$ ratio. Begin to train your palette away from salt/fat/sugar as the norm. Use more nuts and seeds for snacks than chips, crackers, puffs, etc.

I'm not arguing here, but curious how potato chips are "ultra processed"? Regular chips are potato, oil, and salt. I understand if the inclusion if "oil" is considered "ultra processed," but then that means nearly every single food - packaged, prepared in a restaurant, or prepared at home - would fall into the "ultra processed" category, right?

Classes in logic might benefit you, as your argument is seriously flawed. To begin with, much of the oil used in potato chips is highly processed, plus, you have failed to read the added ingredients. I'm going vegan forever except when I add vegan and plant based foods added with cheese when I want to cheat on my diet. Exercise is always key, but eating in moderation is a must. Leave hot dogs, red hots, spam, smoked sausage, seafood, and all meats alone and just go plant based and vegan. If I want to cheat on my diet, eat a Caesar salad and a can of diet coke that would help u lose weight. That's what my doctor told me. With all the diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure, and a early death. We should just avoid all processed foods and also meats and seafood and sugar including natural sugar from fruits. Go on a plant based diet and exercise but eat savory fruits like tomatoes, cucumbers, and hot and mild peppers and drink more bottled water and iced tea. That way u won't have to worry about dying an early death if u can avoid meats and seafood. U can have a longer life if u can avoid certain foods that contain sodium, sugars, and nitrates. I avoid seafood because u can get gout in your feet and it can make u die an early death. If I want some brain food, eat more spinach. Spinach is an awesome veggie with vitamins and minerals and not only that, it keeps u healthy, no wonder Popeye the Sailor always say eat your spinach, u will be strong to the finich. Enough said.
