Eating at Delmonico’s. NYC. One of the Best Steakhouses and a Legendary Restaurant
I eat at and review Delmonico’s in the Financial District of New York City. The restaurant has been around since 1837 and is considered to be the first fine dining restaurant in America. Several dishes have been invented at Delmonico’s including the Baked Alaska and the eggs benedict. Delmonico’s is also recognized as one of the best steakhouses in NYC. They’re famous for their signature Delmonico cut of steak, which I try among other courses. After a three-year closure, Delmonico’s is once again open.

Nice! The restaurant is certainly legendary!
I looked up the inflation rate for 40 cents in 1876 because I was curious about just how expensive that coffee was, and 40 cents was the equivalent of over $11 in today’s money. I guess this restaurant HAS always been super expensive haha. But from this video, it seems like it’s worth it, at the very least for a once-in-a-while special occasion

Actually 11 $ for a cup of coffee in such a high end restaurant is not that expensive, depending of the blend served. Indonesia (Sumatra) Kopi Luwak blend would fetch 100 $ a cup. Brewing that blend at home in your own machine would come to 10 $. a cup. Needless to say that blend is purely exquisite.

Sauce Etiquette: In the U.S. use a teaspoon and place the sauce on the side of the steak and not on top of the steak. Dip from the portion from the side of the steak and not from the serving dish. Thank your for this video, a dream came true! I found you coincidentally on the last weekend and am really enjoying your content. I binge watch an abundance of your videos everyday and now at the right time you deliver the restaurant I am looking forward to the most. In the Netflix show 'The Alienist' the characters are dining at Delmoico‘s multiple times and while following those well written dialogues I was in awe of the authentic scenery with those humongous paintings and the similar sized round dining tables with white tablecloths and antique silverware. Since then I followed the developments of the restaurant; interior-wise the new Delmonico‘s lacks the authenticity of the former restaurant-even if the latter already went with rectangular dining tables. According to your footage the lighting and seat positioning just feels odd to me. Thanks for this and all your other videos! I really enjoy your video style and how you mix your other interests, mainly running and reading, into the videos. I would like to see more vlogs and neighborhood explorations, as I really enjoyed your documentations of your days in Tribeca and Chicago. I would also be interested in a video where you rank all the restaurants in NYC you have visited compartmentalized in the different cuisines. Sincere thanks and best regards from Germany!

James, your experience at Delmonico's was a wonderful sight for many of us. I need to add this famed place to my bucket list when I'm next in NYC. One small point, just for informational purposes though. When tasting any bread item it is customary, in finer establishments at least, to break off a small piece of the baked goods and butter that alone. Thereafter, continue nibbling by repeating the subdivision method. Being of the older generation, this is how we were taught to approach a bread course. You may elect which ever style you feel comfortable with, but I felt compelled to let you know about this approach. Cheers.

I had a wonderful pallet and sense of smell before I caught Covid in 2020 . I could taste something made in a fine dining establishment and recreate it at home. If it was an especially ingredient heavy dish I have been known to save some to take home with me or if I couldn’t stop myself from eating it all get another packed to go. That way after my first try at cooking it I had a sample of it to comparison it to and could fine tune what I might be missing on my first try. I have been told that some of my hijacked versions were an improvement on the original. There is no greater praise than that. Since I had Covid food doesn’t taste the same. I was one of those people that still tested positive 4 months later, and caught it 3 times. Covid tried hard to kill me. I can’t taste the small nuanced flavors like I used to. 😢 it was nice while it lasted. Been 3 years now and it appears this handicap is going to be permanent. ☹️ I loved your video and subscribed so I can eat vicariously through you. Tell me more.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Wow, they finally opened up ! During it's down time I believe they filmed a Walking Dead episode inside the restaurant. Delmonico's is supposedly the first restaurant in New York to offer hamburgers. I am not entirely sure but I believe so. I may visit here in the near future. Great food vlog as always. Loved the look at that cheesecake, what a work of art.

Thank you! Yeah, I've seen their interior pop up in a few shows. I haven't heard that about the hamburgers, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. It seems like the restaurant was the first at a lot of things. Indeed, that cheesecake was amazing!
That menu is surprisingly affordable. I’ll have to go there next time I visit.

The ribeye portion consisted of 50% cap, explaining its exceptional tenderness. It's worth noting that typically, one wouldn't start with the cap first, but everyone has their own preferences. Delmonico's ribeye cut offers an impressive balance between the cap and eye, but the question remains: was the eye portion as juicy as the cap?

Indeed! To me, the entire steak seemed to maintain an even balance of juicyness all the way through.

Thank you so much and thank you for the kind words! I really strive to give it my all with each video.
Looks good but Being a Texan, I enjoy a grilled Holla Pino pepper with my steak. So if they can’t accommodate then it’s a No Go for me 🤠

Compared to so many higher end steak houses these days, I thought Delmonico's prices are relatively on par. I was expecting them to be a lot higher just due to the restaurant being so iconic.

Indeed, the prices seem fair, especially for the quality.
Regarding the salt.... you can always get the shaker out and add some, but you can't take it out of the food once prepared. There are people that are on low salt diets and those that don't care for salty food. These folks must be considered when cooking.

Indeed! I completely understand that. It's much better to have something that's under-seasoned rather than over-seasoned.
I always pause when a Chef talks about "New" and "Global flavors" on an uber-traditional menu! 😮

I know what you mean. It's about finding the right balance between paying respect to the tradition of the restaurant and keeping it up to date with the times.

Thanks for watching! The NY spot is the original restaurant. A lot of other establishments used the Delmonico's name in some fashion, but are technically not affiliated with the restaurant.
didnt see a single mention of how the steaks were aged and length of time, but they sure liked to include the farm names 🙄

Yeah, I know when the restaurant was open before, at least for the signature Delmonico steak, it was wet-aged for, I believe around 30 days. However, with the new chef and reopening, that may have changed.
