Eating at Bonnie’s. NYC. The Most Popular and Unique Chinese Restaurant in Brooklyn

I eat at and review Bonnie’s in Williamsburg, Brooklyn of New York City. Bonnie’s serves Cantonese American Chinese food and is very popular. The restaurant has a number of unique offerings such as an MSG martini and a take off the McDonald’s McRib utilizing char siu.

    Here's my review of Bonnies: I went to Bonnie's and sat at the bar. I had one small noodle dish, X.O. Cheung Fun Noodles - $27, and one cocktail - $17. My total bill was $50 before tip. Add a 20% tip and the bill for one small portion of average tasting Chinese noodles and a drink was $60 !!! It doesn't make sense to me. On another visit, I had their "famous" $27 McRib Sandwich. The bread was store bought and the flavors were bland, barely a step above OG McDonald's own McRib which costs $5. Dishes at Bonnie's are portioned small and their twist on Cantonese food is skin deep. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was fine. My negative take on Bonnie's must be in the minority because Bonnie's is always busy. Bonnie's expensive prices make Oxomoco's $14 taco look like a bargain. If you go to Bonnie's, be prepared to spend heavily. Not recommended.

    Don't you know to be successful in today's restaurant business you need to give your street food fancy names, make 'em look purrty, and jack up the prices. The social media influencers will take care of the rest.

    this is the review James should have delivered. shaving some aged tofu on a cacio e pepe doesn’t make it innovative or fusion. the sandwich looks like basic cha shu (can be bought anywhere) in a roll with gherkins onions and store bottle sauce. i can do that at home. cocktails for $17 is probably fair for NYC.

    This was truly a fascinating & intriguing review which held my complete interest throughout the offering. How interesting it was to view your comments & (the somewhat!) enjoyment about the MSG Martini'. Then, to witness the menu items created by a Brooklyn raised chef of chinese heritage who presented his interpretation of "cacio e pepe" along with his "McRib" inspired dish. ONLY IN AMERICA as my Italian Grandmother would always say! And indeed, the greatness & specialness of living in NYC is demonstrated by your meal; the neighborhood you are in, & the creators/craftsmens who inhabit our city that you so wonderfully "highlight" & describe for our viewing pleasure. Great written work & visual presentation offered to us all. Thank you so much for sharing this delightful review. This is Peter M.; out!

    In this part of the video what I find very interesting is the fact that although it's a Cantonese American restaurant the dishes came out one by one which is very unusual they served it American style and not Chinese style which is usually the norm and the portions were very small just look at the noodles if you go to a Chinese restaurant the position is 3 times bigger and with vegetables and maybe some chicken, pork, and baby shrimp this place is definitely a American place and not for Chinese people because they won't go. And the char siu burger was very small and char siu is the Chinese version of BBQ.

    Hi James. Another great video. I have a very specific question. In your video,you DEFINITELY had a look of distaste with a sip of your (MSG etc) drink. If you ever come across a serving that is truly unappealing to you would you ask for for different(safer) or will you chalk it up to experience it. This is my paradox of eating out. I tend to order "safer" things. Thank you.

  • @Jamesnu

    @Jamesnu

    Thank you! Yeah, it's sometimes a risk ordering certain things, but if I end up not liking it, I just accept it as an experience. Even the "safe" courses might not always work.

Would love some ideas for a non touristy, within a mile or two of some restaurants that are fairly reasonable. Also need one for 12. Hell's Kitchen just north so probably headed there. Thanks! Offering a MSG cocktail was pretty darn cheeky, considering that probably most people's immediate reaction to MSG is a big "nope." Full marks for bravery. ;)Too bad that chutzpah wasn't in service of a better martini. You didn't say it was bad exactly, but clearly it didn't knock your socks off. I think it is pretty hard to improvise on martinis.

    Wow. Looks amazing. Do they have fried chicken sandwiches? I'm going to work on my own (kosher) version of this sandwich. The milk bun looks great, and the Chinese hot mustard is a fantastic idea for a sandwich. This sandwich alone looks like it could make a restaurant. By the way. Blaylock, a neurologist has the best book on MSG, called "Excittoxins". It's all about not just MSG, but protein powders and aspartame, and all the most neurotoxic foods. As a Naturopathic doctor, I advise all my clients who have infants or elderly parents with dementia to steer clear of diet sodas for this reason and all protein powders other than homemade cashew smoothies made from the nuts themselves. :) As a former runner (ran 10 years without missing) I highly recommend Trader Joes green juice (vitamins especially vitamin C which build new muscle), Coconut water (potassium), and ginger shots in the above (digests protein making it easier to repair and replace muscle. But I'd avoid diet sodas other than Stevia soda which is actually a good antibacterial used in Lyme disease.

    Hi James, well, for $99, you're allowed to make suggestions about the martini, the cacio e pepe and the sauce spread on your rib. As an Australian, I'm still a bit puzzled about how you Americans look at service in a restaurant. I mean, if you spend your money anywhere, do you expect for there to be bad or ordinary service, and then you're so delighted with good or great service, you are compelled to offer a tip ? We still tip in Australia but we didn't turn it into a kind of 'observance' that has to be rigidly enforced. All restaurants stick to a rule which ensures that their prices are at least 3 times the total cost expended to produce a dish in the first place, unless you want the customer to also subsidize the wages of your staff. Sorry. Got a bee in my bonnet today. Fine video, James. Thank you and all the best !

  • @Jamesnu

    @Jamesnu

    Thank you! Yeah, tipping is pretty extreme in the US, but unfortunately most servers don't get a decent wage from the restaurant and the tip is supposed to supplement that.
