Easy Woodturning Projects Episode 3 / Spinning Tops

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is a tutorial on how to make spinning tops using woodturning on a wood lathe. It's meant to give you some ideas for basic shapes, colors, and textures, and designs and let you try making your own spinning tops from wood. The wood selection is an important thing to consider as you begin. You want a dense closed grain hardwood like maple, cherry, or beech. I chose eastern hard maple because its light in color, and that will help me color it later. First mount your wood blank between centers and turn a tenon on the end to mount it into your chuck jaws. Then proceed to round the blank on the wood lathe using a spindle roughing gauge. Next we are ready to shape the wood. Using a spindle gauge, start making small passes near the end and bring it down to a point. This the point that we will spin the top on. Remove wood in a series of passes like you are making a cove in the wood to start to get rid of material for the handle you spin the top with. When you are thin enough you can then apply colors and textures. Then the only thing to do is work it down removing a little more wood to part off your piece. I hope that this video gives you a new project to try and some new ways to color and texture.

    I used to make them for prizes on hotdog day at school. I made hundreds of them for the school over the 8 + years that my kids were there. My kids would colour them with the sharpie markers also. Now I have grandchildren. Got to get back at it. I really like your designs. I will have to try some of them soon. Take care and stay safe. From: Petawawa, Ontario , Canada.

    Really like your top ideas; however, for safety gear 2:07 I'd recommend wearing more protective shoes than Crocs - I've dropped sharp tools and I could've seriously jabbed my foot if not wearing protective footwear. Just something to keep in mind. You make the cutting look so easy... nice work!

    Thanks so much for your concern for me! I don’t generally wear crocs when I’m turning anymore. It’s wonderful to highlight that it is the responsibility of the woodturner to always evaluate his or her own safety. I’m glad you like my ideas as well!

    How would you go about doing a dreidel shaped top? I imagine that you would leave the blank square, but aside from that aim curious what your process would be.

  • @Geiserwoodturner

    I’m not sure 🤔. I’m not too familiar with dreidels. I can imagine it is as you say leaving the middle square and turning the ends.

    I really enjoyed your process of making spinning tops. What wood dimensions do you start with and end up with. Thank you. I just subscribed 👍

  • @Geiserwoodturner

    @Geiserwoodturner

    Thanks for subscribing! To answer your question I generally start with a 2 inch by 2 inch piece. If I use a 5 inch long blank I can usually get 2 tops that are roughly 2 inches tall.

  • @Geiserwoodturner

    @Geiserwoodturner

    I generally make tops from a 2 inch blank, but you can go smaller or larger. I go about 6 or 7 inches on the length so I can make 2 tops at a time. One right after the other. 😀
