Edit: hi buns, I misspoke, aspected benefic will be considered over healing since it has an initial cure potency. Regen will not since there is no initial cure potency. 😅 hots or healing over time do not generate aggro but over healing (healing while at full hp) still does.

I mained WHM all throughout SHB and still play it frequently now. I've completed every savage tier since Eden's Gate and have done four of the game's ultimates. (I've yet to touch TOP.) Some criticisms: 1. Cure III isn't really for stacks. The range is a bit broader these days (e.g. you can use it for NA and Ego Death in p8s--where players aren't exactly stacked!), but moreover, It heals less than Medica II, making it a worse choice most of the time anyway. Cure III exists to deal with burst. In casual content you'll virtually never use it. 2. Regen is best cast prepull in dungeons (i.e. while running between mobs and just before stopping). You can't Holy here anyway, so you get a lot of mileage out of casting Regen while moving instead. Generally, you don't want to keep it up always, though; it usually converts into overheal in raids, and in dungeons, reapplying it tends to be overkill unless the tank is especially bad. (Though it's okay to recast it as a safety net if you're still learning the job!) By the time you're comfortable on the job, you should virtually never cast it when you could be casting Holy or Glare instead. 3. Not getting the full mileage out of Holy stuns actually doesn't matter that much. You've plenty of tools. Don't waste a GCD that could have been spent on another Holy on another Regen instead. You'll just draw out the pull, which if anything is likely worse for the tank overall. The faster mobs die, the less damage the tank takes--and the smoother the run will be. 3a. If you really want to stagger your Holy casts, though, do so by Swiftcasting the first Holy. This will guarantee that your second Holy does not overrwrite the stun of the first. 4. Medica II for the single target Regen is just objectively bad to do. Pre level 85, you net 700 cure potency in total, which is the same potency as a single Cure II. It also costs you a GCD which you may not even need to spend, and can very likely overheal on the initial cast or on regen ticks making it even less efficient (e.g. if you Benediction or the tank uses Raw Intuition, you will almost certainly lose a tick when the tank hits full health.) Do not ever do this. By any objective mathematical measure, it's a trap.

I've just started playing the game about 3 weeks ago and I've started as a WHM. I've never played a healer in any game before either, so I wanted to try something different. It's a lot of fun and I've definitely learned a lot and try to keep learning. I'm currently at the point in the MSQ where I just fought Ramuh and I'm not far enough in the story to have unlocked any spells that can use the lily mechanic. For the time being in the content, I use this exact rotation of Regen, Medica2 for healing, but I've got to say - It's been essential to spam Cure 2 to keep the tanks alive. When tanks are doing wall to wall pulls in certain dungeons on the (Hard) difficulty now, they are soaking tons of damage that is barely able to be kept up with even with Regen, Medica 2 and spamming cure 2. I've got to be honest and say I don't really see any tanks using any sort of mitigation yet. The only think I see them using are enmity things. Perhaps it might be a good video if you could help explain in a video similar to this, what tanks should be doing at this stage to mitigate damage for the healers so they can focus more on DPS instead of never-ending healing to keep solely them alive. I don't have any idea what spells/skills tanks should even be using, so I can't even ask them how to be more helpful or suggest better strategies if those situations. It would be a great to know some of the rotations they should be using to mitigate damage.

Just as sometimes Healers will forget to manage their oGCDs and free cures/shields properly, sometimes Tanks will forget to manage their mitigations and CDs properly. Optimal play is VERY difficult as that requires a high degree of knowledge about mob damage AND an understanding of your group, their capabilities and understanding of the game. Even in lvl 90 content I'll find Tanks not properly mitigating, which will require me to stop DPSing and focus heal them. Occasionally I'll find a Paladin that makes me hit the "Oh Shit" button on cooldown. It's also good to keep in mind that just as you don't have access to the super-heals at lower levels, Tanks only have so much mitigation at lower levels. At the end of the day, as you're going through MSQ, the only two expectations of the Healer are: 1. Keep everyone at a minimum of 1HP and 2. Contribute to DPS. If you're doing these things, you're pulling your weight.

Regen is one of my favorite heals, but I thought your description on it wasn't perfect. The full threat of regen is applied at the moment that you cast it, so if you cast it on the tank BEFORE they aggro anything, it will have 0 threat. Threat problems from regen happen if you cast regen AFTER the tank aggros something. This is one of the reasons that I hate tanks that pull with their gap closer, sometimes they will use their gap closer the same time I cast regen, meaning I get threat. For trash pulls in 4 man dungeons, here's a combo that I find works VERY WELL for whm: Stick to the tank like glue. Start with regen and Divine Benison before the tank pulls the last group. Once the tank has the mobs in position, cast holy 4 times. I'll squeeze in assize between 2 of the holies, often between the first and the second. After the 4th holy, cast asylum, then refresh regen on the tank, and resume spamming holy. If asylum is on cooldown, I'll often replace it with something like temperance if it is a high level dungeon.

I actually prefer using lilies over tetra. Mostly, because I can always weave tetra after a lily for massive healing but also because tetra has a massive potency and should not be wasted on regular healing in my opinion but rather on letting the tank drop low before bringing them back up high. I also like to prioritize using assize for damage unless I know there is a raidwide coming within about 5 seconds that I can use to oGCD heal my party with, then I will hold it a bit. Liturgy of the bell can be forcibly popped early for a total of half the potency of the original. Original gives 5 stacks of 400 potency, so halving that is 5 stacks of 200 potency heals. In casual content I use it before a raidwide for the first 400 potency heal, then pop it for another 800 potency of healing off of the remaining stacks. Also something really important is that for casual content, regen is really strong but for harder content, regen is very much a crutch that will eat into your damage and could impact dps checks, so its good to even in casual content start trying to get used to using your afflatus rapture as your main healing spell, with oGCD heals/mits weaved on the tank to keep them up instead of double regen :)

You genuinely do not need to run Medica2 and Regen full uptime on your tank, casting Medica2 that often is the single greatest way to go OOM and be screwed when you actually need to heal. Each Medica2 you cast is a Holy you could've cast instead to kill the trash pack quicker. The problem with healing is that how smoothly everything goes is fully dependent on other players. If your tank isn't geared properly, or isn't cycling their mitigation correctly (or even at all), or is standing in aoes, then you're going to suffer. If your DPS aren't pushing their buttons and trash is taking too long to die, you're going to suffer. Casting Cure2 in lower level content isn't that big of a deal, it heals for a lot so it's very valuable before you get any of your other tools. If you're having to spam it, then the problem is one of the things listed above and you're just gonna have to suffer through it. Cure2 is immediately replaced by Afflatus Solace as soon as you get it, and likewise you'll typically rarely cast Medica2 once you get Afflatus Rapture, or even as early as Asylum tbh. In fact you're going to want to *prioritize* Lily heals once you get Afflatus Rapture because it feeds Afflatus Misery, which is a big damage gain on trash packs and in downtime. If you need bigger healing then you couple Rapture with Plenary Indulgence, or your cohealer will help out with their own healing, but there is genuinely little reason to cast Medica2 in current non-extreme non-savage content. Also, a skill that every job needs is LET YOUR REGENS DO THEIR WORK. There is ZERO point to you casting any sort of regen ability if you're immediately going to follow it up with yet more unneeded healing. People do not need to be brought back to 100% ASAP unless a mechanic calls for it, let your regens heal for you so you can keep dpsing and bring the fight to an end faster.

Excellent video, thank you very much ! Just one little thing : regen or any HoTs don't generate aggro anymore since 6.2 ! Actually, if you use it just after he pulled one of the mobs, you may take the aggro of the other mobs in the same pack and confuse new tank players. But not because of the overhealing, because of the spell itself. Same scenario with a DoT spell for example. For the new regen healers : don't hesitate to put a regen on your tank before he starts to pull. It will be more confortable. Have fun

I only put Regen on tank if synced conent (or a dark knight) as the other 3 tanks' own short oGCD can keep their HP up just fine majortity of the time in level cap content via trials, raids, but if dungeon big pulls yes Regen definitely. Plus Lilybell is the best lazy aoe heal in entire game.

Nice guide, but although I don't do savages and endgame yet I've been playing WHM for 600h and some things, like the use of tetra, temperance or Regen bug me. Tetra is a panic button for me, like a mini bene, I use it for saving a lily or mana when out of resources, or when I want to greed damage and let the tank drop a GCD below where I would heal them. Regen in bosses is wasting a GCD, WHM has an absurd amout of healing, you are not wasting healing power, just losing a glare cast. Temperance is the same, I rarely use it to heal, I use it mainly as mitigation for AoE, the extra healing is to top heal that damage. Also, I use Plenary exclusively with Medica II when an AoE hits and I'm sure that there aren't any more following, as Medica II is a cheap alternative to using a Lily, but it takes time. Plenary helps the initial heal to be more effective than a Lily heal (300 with lily, 400 with Medica and Plenary) and leaves the nice HoT of 100 to the whole party. Also, don't be afraid to waste Rapture casts, I often find myself capping the Lilies. You want to have a Misery cast every 90s for that absurd amount of damage (1290 on a target and around 4 holy cast on AoE, it's an incredible amount). Also, use the Lucid Dreaming, the AoE heals and constant Dia/Glare spam can eat your MP, thin air can give you free casts but is a bit difficult to weave in some scenarios outside of a panic casted Cure II

My healing tends to be at lv.90 Against mobs Regen - tank Holy Instant heal on tank if below 60% Then stones and instant heals, aoe heal if necessary but depends on lily's I get them every 20 seconds anyway Against boss:- Regen tank Aero Stone constant in between heals Ogcd Afflatus rapture/solace Gcd because the boss fight needs full power And I keep swiftcast on standby for either the tank or other healer. I'd rather do a hard cast than use my swiftcast spell because that can save the battle. I've had to use cure 2, cure 3 and medica 2 occasionally but not every sequenced dungeon trial et cetera.Mainly depends on the instant issue and if you got tools to use; some lv.90 occasions tend to be with parties that grab 3-4 mobs and constantly run. Not all white makes are adapting the current meta playstyle of whute mages at 90 but instead I still see many spamming cure 2 and cure 3 with 2300mp left, no mo regen active but instead them saying sorry I don't know the trial/new/alliance raid. So, for anyone not knowing the White mage lv.90 rotation just watch a video on the rotations and get a feel for it. You'll appreciate the homework and it'll pay of.

(They know cure 2 is awful for the record) They have said so many times that regens are bad buttons and everytime I have argued that they aren't if used in conjunction with other things, it pretty much devolves into "Regen is a gcd and therefore bad". The only time I could ever get them to actually use it is during downtime mechs like high concept It drives me up a wall especially when we die to healing and they are say " well there's nothing more we can do must be a mit issue" WHEN IF YOU WOULD DROP THE PRETENCE OF IT BEING BAD AND USED MEDIA 2/REGEN IN ANTICIPATION OF RAID WIDES/TANK AUTOS WE WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE. *Cough* maybe I am the one who is wrong. I went through a phase of regen and medica 2 because "it's just short of a cure 1 every three seconds! Who wouldn't want that?" but eventually decided that 1400mp every 15 seconds was a lot for the amount of lily healing I was doing anyway, more recently I've got good at weaving my OGCDs and it works really well. I've even come to specifically warn people against using medica as a primary heal, it certainly has it's uses; pre-rapture AoE heal, counter to DoTs, partywides with no follow-up, I even use it now and then to take the edge off things before addressing them with a proper heal but specifically not as a high uptime option, that's what regen is for and for me, only regen.

Hmm so according to this cure and cure 2 shouldn't be on our bars? Bad game development in that case. Then again if we do daily roulette and get put into low level content we won't have anything else. I really don't think regen on its own is enough. When a tank pulls multiple packs, regen and medica 2 is not enough on their own. Sure doing holy to help mitigate is good. I don't know I feel like there is unnecessary slander for ppl using cure and cure 2. I'm so used to it. It is my go to heal to top off ppl who are slightly injured. I admit regen is better in some cases, but the game isn't so strict and hard to make it so using cure over regen makes much of a difference. I almost never run out of mana.
