Yes I tried to explain in the video I thought but I’m using a 4 foot level. It doesn’t matter what length level you using as long as you adjust accordingly. So if you’re doing 1/4 inch per foot drop you would do an inch in the length of a 4 foot level or a half inch in the length of a 2 foot level or 2 inches in the length of a 8 foot level etc. if you’re only doing 1/8 inch per foot drop you would do half of that. Hope that helps.

@@SmartEasyDIYer , yes. I’m about to get to the drain field end. Dug a hole every 10 foot. Will check the drop at each point and determine if I can set the proper drop without being too low for the field. If so, then I will have to have a second tank put in that the primary tank pumps up to in order to get the drop needed. That is the problem out in the county where anyone with a backhoe can sub to a builder.

You didn't mention whether this was 'into' or 'out of' the septic tank. Into the tank, carries solids and needs to be 1/4" per foot. Out of is only liquid and can be much less steep so its usually 1" per 10'.

You have to check in your local area to be sure but where I am it’sit’s 1/4 inch per ft.

@Smart Easy DIY internet what's the difference. I live in the country so there is no one who determines it....I'm about to do my lines have the trench dug out now

  • @SmartEasyDIYer

Typically it’s quarter inch per foot for the main lines. Sometimes for a smaller line if you can’t get the drop 1/8 inch will suffice. That’s what I’ve always been told. It’s just if you have local code. Sometimes they have certain stipulations that override the general rule.

Yeah it was just a quick video at the time I’ll redo it better sometime. It doesn’t matter where on the pipe you put your level as long as you have it spaced correctly for the slope you want.

@@SmartEasyDIYer Good video I am just a little confused. I understand it’s a 1/4 drop per inch and you put a 1 inch block on 4 ft level. But what if the pcv pipe you are using for your septic line is 10 ft? Would you use a 2 1/2 block? Also do put the end of the level at the end of the pipe with the block facing down hill. Thanks in advance.

  • @SmartEasyDIYer

@@Flguy34698 No problem at all. So yes you would put the block on the downhill side because you want the pipe to slope down hill. So if you’re trying to get 1/4 inch per foot drop and you put a 1 inch block on the end of a 4 foot level that will be your 1/4 inch per foot drop. The size of the block is based on the length of your level. For example if you had an 8 foot level you would want to put a 2 inch block on the end. You can put it anywhere on the pipe and you will maintain your proper drop. Sometimes the pipes sag a little so I like to check on The uphill end towards the middle and then from the middle on down to the other end.

@@SmartEasyDIYer Wow, cool. So it does the pipe is 10 ft as long as I am using a 4 ft and a 1 in block I will get the slope I want?

@@Flguy34698 yes if you have a 4 ft level and use a 1 inch block that will give you 1/4 inch per ft and you can set it just in the middle of the pipe if you want. The nice thing with this block installed is it takes the guess work out of it you can just read level on your level bubble. 😊

For 4-inch PVC piping and a building sewer less than 50 feet long, the minimum slope is 1 inch in 8 feet, or 1/8-inch per foot, and the maximum is 1/4-inch per foot. For sewers longer than 50 feet, the slope should be 1/4-inch per foot.
