The "Silent Air " is is a large box with a large air filter since they are removed from the head . The larger and more free flowing you can make it and the farther you can get it from the head the quieter you can make any air compressor. In the old days we used to just pipe the intake thru the wall to the outside with a filter and presto - Quiet air compressor

Thanks for sharing. A buddy of mine has a rather nice stainless steel bike silencer at a jaunty angle on the outside of his workshop for the job. Looks cool and I testfy that it makes a big difference. Again though, why so many 'dislikes'? Perhaps those who dislike could comment to explain their reasons rather than just throwing sand in the works.

I once had a dirt bike with an expansion chamber and I welded an adapter to an old VW Beetle exhaust tip then pinned the adapter into the expansion chamber. Huge improvement. Thanks for the ideas!

I bought a KOBOLT 60gal single-stage compressor many years ago and placed it inside my attached garage. Soon I found that the noise was impossible to endure. Being inside my garage was the problem. I moved it to an outside concrete slab which significantly reduced the sound. For my neighbor's benefit, I installed a six-foot high PVC fence with a gate to enclose it and direct the sound upwards. Lastly, I mounted a retractable awning to provide weather protection. When the compressor is being used, I fold the awning up. This was a good DIY project and not expensive to accomplish.

I did something similar years ago. Probably in 2002. I put nipples in the heads and removed the filters. I then fabricated a box that accepted a flat automotive filter. Ford powerstroke if I remember correctly. The greatest part of my design was I actually need no muffler whatsoever. I ran a 2 inch pipe from the box through the wall to the outside of my garage. This serves 3 huge porpoises. 1. The noise is outside, and believe me, that pipe is noisy out there. Be sure to place a screen over the end to prevent birds, mice, etc. And put a downward facing 90 to eliminate moisture entering. 2. Cooler air is less dense. In the summer my garage gets very hot especially near the hot compressor pump. Not only does the outside shaded air intake help keep the pump cooler, im sure the cooler air entering the hot pump has more expansion and thus, though perhaps meniscal, gives the compressor greater efficiency. 3. When im sand, painting, or any other dusty dirty work, the compressor is always gets clean air from outside instead of dust from the shop. This reduces filter services and thus prolongs the life of the compressor. Also the automotive filter has much finer micron catching abilities than the original filter with far more surface area.

This compressor uses a pump made by Eaton Compressor, many brands use this like Emax, Polar Air ETC. It's servicable and reabuildable.

Used to work for a company that designed cogenerator plants. Used rooms full of 454, 502 or 540 big block Chevys run on LP gas to run electrical generators. Most were in public schools. So how did they silence a room full of normally loud car engines? Car mufflers on the exhaust stack and intake piping. Technically they were called "sound attenuators". Looked just like a big SUV muffler to me. Nice work showing others how to do this.

Thanks for the tip. The compressor for my powerplasma cutter is so noisy when it kicks in.

Big difference, worth the effort. Lots of compressor noise comes from the tank. As air exhausts inside the tank, it sends sound waves through the compressed air in the tank, and it whacks against the tank. Try putting your ear against the tank and you will hear a metallic drumming sound from compressed air hitting it (among lots of other loud mechanical sounds). The solution is Dynamat or similar sound deadening sticky mat. Will make your tank ugly for sure, but may be worth the effort. Note that some compressors have a diffuser inside the tank to quiet it, others just dump air directly into the tank. So results may vary. I can tell you it worked fairly well on a 10g cheap-O.

If you run the pipes outside, that will make it even quieter, the longer the inlet pipe the quieter it will be. With regard to fitting the pipes into the car exhaust, you can use expanding foam, if you are careful. I've used both of these methods and they both work pretty well, I used a box with foam filters in it. It's nice to see a well made, well presented, common sense video.

I ran my first compressor from the nineties like that too. I sold it last summer with the skid attached. With this new one, the only thing I did was put 1/4" rubber pads under each foot like the instruction manual calls for. In a newer video, I use the skid as a foundation for an enclosure for further sound reduction.

I not only left mine on the skid but, I put casters on it. Now I can move it out of the way when I'm not using it or to clean behind it. I also cut out the center so I could install a mechanical self-emptying water trap. Works great. I think I'll add the muffler too after watching this video.

if ur air compressor keeps up with air requirements change the pulleys out and slow down the compressor speed. i have an old standup compressor running half the speed its so quiet u can talk normal while standing next to it.

I like the ball valve on your oil drain too. It looks like you're taking care of your equipment. Is that a drain extension on the bottom too? I wonder if some foam sleeve used to insulate plumbing would make your hoses leak even less noise. You could use 2 smaller lawn mower mufflers if you wanted to, but I don't know how well they work, and you already have that muffler. Some people hang moving blankets like tapestries around and above their compressors, but not attached to them. Just a thought.

It has an automatic drain on the bottom that drains about every 45 minutes for three seconds. Keeps internal tank rusting to a minimum. I have a newer video where I show further refinement to the muffler setup and build an enclosure around the compressor, which really helped.

The pump is definitely working harder, the motor it's probably negligible. If you're in a dirty environment this might be worth it just to pipe your intake to somewhere it can get clean air.

Maybe it's just the audio but I think I like the way it sounds much better without the car muffler attached. the bassy rumble is what I love about this type of compressor.

This compressor doesn't use reeds. It has poppet valves instead. The factory uses a setup like this also, so it should be fine.

I used Tribo-MAX treatment on my 80gal 5HP it's 20-50% quieter.

I use an automotive air filter inside a insulated coffee can.

How many dB does the compressor register?

Now, take those tin filter filter housings off and take a took at the fitting connecting them to the head. The pnes on my compressor were very restrictive. Replaced the entire housing with a pipe nippled screwed into the head and a filter sandwich between 2 pieces of aluminum plate. I don't remember the number, but I took a decent amount of time off the compressor's recycle time.

That sounds like a good idea, to sandwich a big filter between two plates like that. I might mess around with that in the future. I did end up taking the tin housings off later on though. I screwed in 1" street elbows into the head, and then made a big filter from a large suction strainer wrapped with 3 micron polyester filter material. The setup is similar to what the factory uses. I don't know if it has reduced cycle time. I never checked.

Good Idea! You could also make rods longer and stack a bunch of filters together.

If your worry about noise put the compressor out side with sound proof walls around it and run the switch in side the garage .

There's a noticeable difference but not as much as I was expecting, I'm curious what's the decibel readings would be?

The difference is more noticeable in person, as the mic on the camera doesn't pick up the lower frequencies well at all. I am getting a little over a 4 decibel average drop, which is a little over a 50% reduction in perceivable sound level. I'm working on another video to show another modification to lower it further.

you could pipe the sound out thru the wall for even less noise.

See now i've been thinking about this topic for awhile wouldn't an automotive intake from a luxury vehicle work better? Not only is it built with baffling and chambers to quiet induction noise just like from a compressor but it also has an integrated air filter. Im going to hit up the local pick yard and test my idea.

I now use an air box from a hemi. The lines are plumbed through the wall. The air filter can handle any cfm I throw at it. I have another video showing it.

I honestly didn't notice much change to make it really worth the expense of a muffler and parts to rig it. I do think you have a good idea though. Let me ask you this: if you listen to your video of it and then go and listen to it actually running, is there a difference more audible in person than on the video?

What about for a smaller compressor like a gmc syclone 6310? Can you do something like this?

It should work on any compressor. I now have my intake lines running outside the shop to a auto air filter box, so all that noise can only be heard outside.

I am going to add that to a couple of compressors hooked up to a fire suppression system.

I have newer video where I build an enclosure for the compressor which makes it even quieter.

An intake muffler is constructed differently than an exhaust muffler.

I ran mine through wall to the outside,, now I get only fresh air and really quieted it down,,, if you have access to the outside you should do the same and I put the filters outside also..l can tell it's much quieter then your muffler setup with no risk of restrictions. And I also put a 1/2 inch roll of copper tubing between the compressor pump and tank eliminating almost all the water the comes from the 200 degrees air entering the cooler tank causing condensation,,l have many drops with drain values but hardly ever get any water after doing the tubing..seen many useing oil coolers that restricts the flow due to the coils size reduction,,and as I figured alot of them are having pumping issues now due to back pressure on compressor head..just a suggestion I like to pass on what really works..

I have the hoses going outside now too, so it draws in cooler air to help lower compressor temps. The chugging sound is now outside. They connect to a hemi air filter box with bulkhead fittings. It has a screen over the intake to prevent mud hornets and birds from nesting in it. My ram was totaled last summer by a tractor trailer, but I was able to save the filter box for this. I also run a large fan cooled aftercooler and custom condensate reservoir with sight tube and drain after the cooler, and before the shop regulator. It has completely eliminated any line moisture issues in my shop. My compressor tank also has an auto drain which prevents tank rust issues. Thanks for the suggestions.

@@jsplasha connect one end of roll to compressor head and the other to the tank, roll will be 25 foot long l used a 5 gallon bucket to wrap it around to make coils smaller and mounted it behind compressor fan,, put a 1/2 inch water separator on tank end of coil,, and will solve water problem.

@@jsplasha I actually hooked up a hydraulic hose to the existing pipe from water separator with flexible hose

i AM PRETTY SURE THAT I SAW IT AT Harbor Freight but, They have this air line connector that is blue & it splits one 1/4" hose into two but, I was thinking of a part that was already available but, your hoses are much bigger then 1/4" air line!!! Same idea though, 2 openings within a round base to shove down into the muffler/exhaust pipe. I am looking for a Good, CHEAP, very quiet air compressor for my brother/ he lives in an apartment & the neighbor has kids so, He needs a very quiet compressor to air brush at night time without disturbing anyone else & to do so on a very tight budget!

I ran mine through wall to outside and put the filter there , very quiet and no dust from shop

I would be worried that the hose would cause restriction you should check heat value before and after installation.

It doesn't cause any issues that I know of. The factory also uses a hose to muffler setup like this one. I don't recall now if I did a head temp check before I hooked up the hoses, but I know I got a 50°F decrease after I installed a box fan blowing down on it. That's in my second air compressor video.

It's been like that for a couple years now. I used the air box from my hemi ram that got crushed by a semi in my parking lot. But my loss is the air compressor's gain. The filter seems to handle the 36 cfm with no issue. I put fly screen over the intake to keep out crawling things. It cuts intake noise completely. You can only hear a low pitched wop wop wop sound outside when it runs. I think I posted a video about it too if you want to hear the wop wop wop sound for yourself.

You really want a bigger filter.

Use some spray foam to seal the tubes to the muffler

I have another video where I show further improvements to this setup.

I need to buy a compressor to replace my old one so i want to upgrade. My problem is this new one has amps I’m not sure that my electric for my old compressor will hold. Any advice? Any is welcome and appreciated. I’m buying from northerntools.com and it’s a Emax industrial plus silent air 10hp 2-stage , 80 gallon vertical air compressor with silencer 230 volt , 1 phase. Model# ESP10V080V1. All it tells in specs is operates at 40Amps, suggests 60amp breaker and it takes 80amps to start. I have at home 8/2 Romex that i was told is good for 45amps. I have 50amp 2 pull breaker and i was told that will be fine the 60amp is just a suggestion. My real worry is this 80amp start up. I’m not a electrician and don’t want to burn down my house or shop.

Emax and Polar Air are both Eaton pumps, and I'm pretty sure they are the same units with different branding, because the silent air box is Polar Air's creation. I have the same rated unit as you, but Polar Air. 10hp 2 stage 1 phase, 80 gallon. I went by the installation part of my manual and connected to a 60 amp double pole breaker. The 80 amp startup was mentioned too, but it's only for a fraction of a section, not enough to overload a breaker or line. I forget the wire gauge now, but just follow the instructions on that. I have over 350 hours on mine now with now problems whatsoever. If you can, get the hour meter for oil changes intervals, and definitely get an automatic tank drain. It will save the tank bottom from rusting out. Edit: I just checked my comp's electrical box. It says run 4 gauge if cable of 100 ft or less, and 3 gauge if longer.

@@bjputvain I'm glad I could help. I looked on Polar Air's site. I'm not seeing the options to add on the hour meter or the auto drain now. I bought mine in 2017, so they've changed the site since then. You could just call them and ask about it. They were nice people when I dealt with them. I went to the factory and picked mine up. If all else fails, you could just get a Hobb's hour meter and install it on the side of the box if you wanted to. That's what they did with mine. The auto drains can be purchased from McMaster.com.

It’s called an unloader valve. Most good compressors have this.

I don't know if its because i have headphones on, but i can clearly tell a difference.

I can clearly hear the noise reduction but it's not worth it because the compressor needs to draw in ambient air. The muffler will cause an air restriction and create more heat.

Yes, I'd like to put it in a separate room. Unfortunately, my shop's only 500 sq ft and there's no way I can do that. If I build a little enclosure around it, it would over heat quickly. On 50 -60 degree F days, it will actually heat my shop without the furnace on if I'm doing a lot of blasting.

Jeff Burton not to mention it would trap heat. Compressing air makes a lot of heat. Any enclosurewould have to have built in air flow.

All that carbon & rust from the muffler is going straight into your compressor. Inlet air is being restricted. The inlet air is being drawn in from the dirty floor. Not much of a sound reduction. To me your doing more harm than good to the air compressor itself. A compressor needs to breath in the cleanest air possible.

Please know that in my opinion, That is causing more of a strain onto your electric motor. I have the luxury of being poor & purchased a Central Pneumatic 21 gallon Harbor Freight air compressor & it has a 1/4" cold start valve which allows the first 4 pounds of air to escape because the electric motor does not have enough power to turn over the piston to build air pressure & I KEEP ORDERING NEW "COLD AIR RELEIF VALVE 1/4 VALVE'S & YET, they keep failing so, I am considering between a stubby 30 gall Kobalt tank with handle's & 2 wheels, or whether to go to Royal King & get a NOT SO MOBIL-60 gall FOR ABOUT $100.00 LESS? AT LEAST FOR NOW, SOUND IS NOT AS MUCH OF AN ISSUE FOR ME, FOR NOW AT LEAST. I will never again purchase a air compressor which has an air relief valve inline with the intake & the intake air tube, THEY ARE JUNK!!! and I am not referring to the tank safety pressure relief valve that every air compressor has for anyone who is wondering!

Mufflers goes on exhaust not intake. What you're doing is restricting airflow to your engine. I didn't hear any sound difference. You need to put it on the exhaust side. But I also there there's a. Better way than using a car muffler

??? This is an air compressor, not an engine. You can't put a muffler on the "exhaust". And no, it doesn't restrict incoming airflow. The muffler was designed to handle flow from a 5.7L V8 engine. I'm sure it can handle a 37cfm compressor.

easy trick ... lost space and no major result. .... MY build (first compressor rated over "5cfm.." ) starting project when find 2piston seized in garbage. ( quality cast iron, estimate 12-17,cfm ) rebuilding homemade free cost connecting rod with basic tool, cut gasket homemade. try 4 motor before find who run my pulley ratio desireddd (450 pump rpm) at this points, setup is screww on wood bench, no vibration, and no tank raisonannce with my hydrolique hose suppler (pump/Tank) no air filter. juste 12'' 1/2''collant hose, and coton linge for little filtering .((air tank find a recycling trash, and buy for 3$) 1year later. just little ajustement for maximize cfm and energie efficiency ( belt length, exemple, size of check valve, unloader line ect ect result 45db with 15cfm mesured with formule (time,tank, ect ect)

your reducing the intake flow and could cause heat build up.

The factory uses a setup just like this. I don't think it causes any issues, because they offer a five year bumper to bumper warranty. Then again, manufacturers have been known to make mistakes. One of the things I want to do is take temperature measurements with and without the modification.

The air around the motor is hotter than on the floor. So its better to use a system like this if you use right dimensions...

Why not place the unit outside the shop in it's own inclosure ?????? That's what normal shops do. All the way up to 100 HP and 1,000 gallon tanks. Just a thought..

Roger: Normal shops don't do that. They reduce the noise & go on with life.

Compressors should be outside covered up that's it.

I can't believe that pump doesn't blow those lines off.. it must not crank out much CFM. Which is my main concern will all that line and constriction. I spent a fortune on build a compressor that can take a 90 gallon tank to 150 in under 2 minutes.. I went out of my way to make sure the runs from the pump to the tank where wide open and straight as possible. Screw noise.. its a mans tool.

It's actually pretty high capacity for vapor blasting. 38 cfm at 100 psi, 32 at 175. The manufacturer uses the same size lines for their muffler setup too. This particular muffler is from a 400 hp engine, so it can handle a whole lot more than 38 cfm with very little restriction. Man's tool or not, I want to save whatever hearing I have left.

The noise isn't so bad - but it does dim the entire block's lights on start up! No joke - you can hear the pole 'buzz'.

enator71 - I saw that after the fact. I have since done some homework on this and what ppl have found is that the biggest issue when altering the intake in this way is condensation before the cylinders and water buildup. The way to do this right is to build an intake resonator with a drain. I have since seen a video where a guy welded up a nice aluminum airbox and it silenced the induction noise and traps most of the incoming moisture. I can't find he link but if I do I'll post it here.

Well the difference is that the floor under that muffler is cleaner since the compressor is now a vacuum cleaner! Buy a noisy POS compressor and this will happen.

No difference at all. Rubish. Give up! If you want to do something really smart keep working.

I mention in the video that the microphone doesn't pick up compressor sound well. There is a large difference in sound levels, about 4 decibels. In another vid, I reduce the sound another 5 decibels.
