    I never count what Wanda or Remi carries :) Usually they just take some of the first aid stuff, or the cook kit. Helps acount for the extra bulk I'm carrying, when i toss their blanket in my pack.

    Thankfully their food is only kibble, and they've yet to have to carry any water yet:) You hit water sources constantly up here in the Rockies, ao the pups are always finding streams or creeks to drink out of.

    That deodorant hack is genius! I find my dog adds weight but that’s because she is a trail princess and has her own foam sleeping pad and blanket, extra food and water :) When it gets warmer she won’t need the blanket/sleeping pad and maybe she’ll be more helpful! I found that my Toaks 750 was too small for winter. The snow to water ratio is 10:1, so I was constantly filling it with snow just trying to make some drinking water and wasting a lot of fuel. I can't imagine trying to melt water in a 500 ml pot. For winter I'll go back to my MSR anodized AL 1,3 L pot. My 20 year-old MSR Alpine will still come with me on family trips and canoe trips.

  • @MattyOutdoors

    @MattyOutdoors

    For winter, my 1200ml toaks is what im sticking with. The 550ml pot will just be for summer trips.

  • @danielkutcher5704
    @danielkutcher57044 жыл бұрын

    I carry my 1300ml Evernew pot (wide bottom to make better use of the burning characteristics of alcohol), in a 7X14" stuff sack with food for 2-3 days). I use one of those cat food cans full of holes when it's not raining and build small wood fires when I can, mostly to say that I use a more eco-friendly fuel carried in a reusable plastic bottle). Weighing different size cook pots of the same design by the same manufacturer, I was absolutely SHOCKED at how little a weight penalty I paid for the larger pot. I never spill food when I stir it and use it to carry water back to camp if it's not far and I'm going to boil it anyway. It's also easier to catch rain water off a shelter roof and better for melting snow. I have a small ti cup for coffee, which I drink while cooking, and I can reheat it when necessary by dropping it on the stove. The weight saving measures mentioned are things that I've been doing since Ray Jardine, the father of ultralight hiking came on the scene. A low base weight allows you to ditch packs with frames and heavy fabric. Confession: I carry a small guitar on my section hikes on the AT. 😔

  • @MattyOutdoors

    @MattyOutdoors

    4 жыл бұрын

    I definitely agree on those points about the larger pot. I carried my Toaks 1100ml pot for a few years, and definitely loved the benefits of being able to cook in the pot! I still use the 1100, as my winter pot :) I'll also be going to a more eco friendly fuel, as I'm switching over to alcohol stoves :) And theres absolutely nothing wrong with having a luxury/comfort item! Mine is about 55lbs, and snores. ;)

    What I do for deodorant is take some and put it in one of those little cases you get ear plugs in. I'm not sure which weighs less, I'd have to check, but I assume the ear plug case is lighter. One drawback is needing to use your hands to put it on.

    I carry the Lifwater or Smart water bottles all year round. If you are afraid of the water freezing in the narrow fill end then just invert the bottle so the fill end is down. Never had one freeze that way. Also if you bury them in the snow before you turn in for the night they will not freeze because snow remains 32* F and will insulate the water bottle in sub freezing temps.....

    I'll always carry 2 litres with me, as I've got my pup with me 99% of the time. Shes black, and soaks up heat like crazy, so I'm always mindful of keeping her hydrated, and like having water to pour on her to cool her down if we hit stretches without water available. But you're right, if you know the area, and know what you will encounter for water, carrying what you need definitely works

    @@smokabowl2248 you should get your pup a dog backpack so they can carry some of their food and gear. A good rule of thumb, is don't make your pup carry more than 25% of their body weight. Have you looked at using a cut down foam sleeping pad for the pup? Should save some weight over the inflatable pad. Provides a good insulating barrier from the ground, and a soft place to sleep.
