I use a childs round sponge (dollar store) in one hand and a flat head screw driver in the other... The screw driver works amazing at holding down the smaller, more flimsy areas of the stencil while still letting you see where you are going... It's like a long finger you don't mind getting paint on!!

I was going to use rattle cans for the stenciling part itself but I feel like I can do a better job with the makeup sponges! Thank you for showing us all of this!

I’m just starting out with stencils. I had the idea to paint and stencil a wildflower boarder around the top of the wood planter boxes my neighbor built for me. I practiced on a small balsa wood box but it didn’t work well. This video is probably the best I’ve seen yet. I’ve learned a lot! I think my next foray into stenciling will go much better. Thanks!!

Thank you! I stenciled last night for the first time. I did not have good luck with it. It bled under the stencil, and was sloppy. But I rushed through it and kept forgetting to dab each time I loaded up. So I searched you tube and found your video. I subscribed and selected “ all”. So hopefully in a few months stenciling will be second nature to me as well. Thanks again. ❤

I am going to try the makeup sponge method. I am using stencils on wood I have done the Shou Sugi Bon method on which pops the grain out. It has been horribly difficult with bleeds when using a cheap paint brush. I hope this method you demonstrated works for my projects as I am running low on time to get them finished and to the Marines who they belong to. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!!

I'm trying to stencil very small text onto the side of a miniature barrel. The barrel is a compound curve so the vinyl is quite tricky to apply. Do you have any tips for such surfaces and very small text? I've tried foam sponges and each time have paint seep under stencil. Maybe I'm not using the correct stencil vinyl as normally use just standard application sticky vinyl... Could this be a cause? Also would you recommend investing in an airbrush instead... Could this avoid the problem of paint seeping?

So sorry that I missed your question! I would recommend that you clean it well first, I would use our TSP substitute and then I would give the surface a scuff sand. If you notice the paint resisting, you may need to use a primer such as Fusion's ultra grip over a high sheen/high gloss paint but in many cases it's not necessary with good prep and a good scruff sand if you use Fusion mineral paint.
Do you use Mod Podge or anything around the edges first? I've seen this in other videos so I'm trying to learn the best practices BEFORE my projects. I'm just starting out as a crafter and I'll be doing my first stenciling later today, so I'm trying to learn the best hacks to AVOID any issues 😁 thanks!

No I do not. I have found when I use very little paint and the methods in the video with the make up sponge that it is unnecessary for me.
Spray painting stencils, would work also, if the paint is thinly applied, like an air brush or lower pressure gun application.

Thanks for a helpful video! I'm a newbie to stenciling. Do you always leave the connecting gaps made by the stencil, or go back and fill them in afterwards?
@PaintedbyDenell
9 ай бұрын
I think I understand your question. The stencil on this one for example is supposed to have this design so in this case I left it as is. Most cases if a stencil has connections, it will come in layers and you have to do it in stages. I follow the stencils instructions and design. I usually never do free hand on a stencil unless I mess up.
Awesome work,what kind of color do you use and where can I buy it,thank you!

I do use Oracle for my cricket with stenciling over paint. A big key is to make sure that your paint is dry and the surface you were painting on was cured as well. For example if you used oil oil base stain don’t put your water base paint on prematurely. I use fusion products. I also do not use transfer tape. I use painters tape.
I’ve been using stencil brushes but not sure of the quality. I just started stenciling again so trying to get those perfect lines. I’m going to try your make up sponge technique! Do you clean your stencils after every use and how do you clean them? I love that sign by the way!
@PaintedbyDenell
10 ай бұрын
Yes, I do clean my stencils after use. I clean while the paint is still wet and use a baby wipe. If all the paint does not come off, I will use Fusion’s brush soap too. Sometimes paint will get dried on when I had workshops in the past and those stencils I just use as-is.

What is your opinion of silk screen stencils

I have only used one once so I don't have a enough experience to really make an educated opinion. I just was not sure how durable the end result would be of the recommend products that needed to be used with the silk screen stencils so I chose to avoid them.
Hi , Painted.
I am new to stenciling . And have been trying my best with a very light hand and it still bleeds . I was told to use mod Podge. But here do I put the pad podge??? Please help
@PaintedbyDenell
Жыл бұрын
What type of application tool are you using? When they are saying modpodge, that would be to put down first so if you do have bleed it dries clear. Then after you stencil the mod podge and it’s dry, you come back with your paint.
How do u stencil 2 layers...like for a flip flop. Where u want the foot part one.color and the band a different color. My stencil does have a separate stencil for just the band. But am struggling with how to tape off.
@PaintedbyDenell
2 жыл бұрын
Typically if it is a two part stencil you would do the base first and allow it to dry. Then you would do the overlay. The stencil itself should block your surface but if it’s tiny then you will need to put down some extra tape. That’s why you have to allow your first layer to dry first.
Thanks so much, but how do I do the cutting please?
@PaintedbyDenell
10 ай бұрын
If you are talking about cutting the stencil, this is a premade stencil that I purchased from a company. If you are wanting to make stencils yourself, you would want to look into getting a cutting machine like a Cricut.

How would I prevent a bubbling effect in my paint?
@PaintedbyDenell
2 жыл бұрын
I would maybe try using a higher quality paint. I don't have bubbling with Fusion Mineral paint and using the makeup sponge. I'm guessing you are getting a lot of air bubbles in your paint or you may have too much water in your paint. I'm not sure what you are using but I don't see bubbling ever. This is what I use. paintedgreenbay.com/buy-fusion-mineral-paint-online-color-collections/
Great idea! What tricks do you have for a really intricate stencil designs? I'm using oil paint on a very intricate stencil and I CANNOT get clean lines. It's driving me crazy!
@PaintedbyDenell

My guess is it still that you’re using too much paint. I would try doing multiple extremely thin coats. Make sure to blot off before application too.
@copyjim81
Жыл бұрын
If your under surface is painted, you could try painting the under color on your stencil first, let that dry enough and then paint your final stencil color. The first painting will help seal the stencil to the surface and help prevent bleed… Not sure what to do when there is no under paint, except using less paint on your brush as she suggested , and making a light base coat first to seal the stencil to your surface. Good luck.
Great tip, thank you.

My best advice would be to just keep trying with less paint on your application tool. Typically it’s from overloading the paint when you get the bleed.

Hello
I had major bleeding under stencil, it was champaign chalk paint on dark Stained wood I can't even tell what it was suppose to be ....which was the Zodiac symbols for Gemini and Libra. looks like a big blob of paint now. I waited until the next day to remove the stencils and now I can't fix it.

When you are stenciling you go light with your paint. So with a dark color you will not need as many coats but I still like to do more so I don't get bleed through. I would say about 3 with a black. Less is more as I hate bleed under my stencil so I would rather do an extra coat.
How to combine separate letters into a single Stencil
@PaintedbyDenell
Жыл бұрын
I use my cricut for custom words but if you want to do that, you can either look into using transfer paper, a projector or get individual letter stencils but then you will have to tape them together. You can make guides with paint sticks so they are straight. There are also stamps now available on the market too with individual letters so you can make your own custom words.
