Easy Soil Sifter - DIY

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'll show you how I built this soil sifter for my garden. This design can easily be adapter to other sizes for other uses. I used reclaimed lumber, 1/2 inch metal mesh screening and assembled it with decking screws.
I'll be using mine to sift potting mix for seed starting. It might turnout to be useful for repotting and harvesting root crops and probably a few other things too!
Also called a Soil Sieve or Soil Screen or Wheelbarrow Sifter.

    The deck screws with the roofing washers is a good idea. If I’m not mistaken, the roofing washers have rubber on them to create a seal for roofing applications. The rubber on the washers likely helps to alleviate shock while sifting, extending the life of the unit. I have a similar idea that involves creating a quick connect, connecting my 20v oscillating tool, to the sifter frame. Push button sifting if you will. Solid work!

  • @KatesGarden

    @KatesGarden

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Yes, I used the rubber washers with the metal ones. I also thought they would help hold onto the mesh and conform to it since it’s bumpy and the washers are a bit small. That sounds like a great idea to add a vibratory mechanism to the sifter. It would make it way faster. I hope you get it to work, good luck!

  • @Jrixi

    @Jrixi

    @@KatesGarden Thanks! I got the prototype completed and the oscillating tool was not effective. The vibrations it produces were way too concentrated. Next I’ll try mounting up a reciprocating saw. I’ll need to add some rails for the sifter to fix to. That way the frame can slide freely back and forth. I have a very large quantity of rocky dirt that needs to be sifted.

    I couldn't find the hardware cloth at the hardware store. They have screening, but it's much smaller opening, like keeping mosquitos out. I bought 50 foot roll of 1/4" squares. It's 3 feet by 50 feet long. I made one 2' x 2' dirt screener out of four 2' 2 by 4's. The 2 by 4 frame is glued and screwed together. The hardware cloth is nailed o to the frame with 3/8" U type staples that are used for fencing in chickens fencing.

    Yes, this wood is from a deck that had to come down so it happens to be painted cedar. But you can use whatever wood you’d prefer and if it’s kept out of the weather it should last a long time regardless of the wood type. Hope this helps, enjoy your compost!

    Nice work! You used 1/2" screen. Have you found that to be about right? I'm looking to use a sifter to screen topsoil to get mulch wook chips out and use the screened soil for overseeding base on existing lawn. Should I consider doing down to 1/4" or do you think 1/2" is the ticket? Thanks!

  • @KatesGarden

    @KatesGarden

    2 ай бұрын

    I used the 1/2" screen last year screening compost for my carrot seeds. It looked beautiful and gave such a nice material for the seed bed. So if it were me, I'd be happy with that result but I also imagine the results might vary based on the starting material. If it turns out to be coarser than you were hoping, adding a second layer of screening offset by half temporarily could make a finer sifter? Of course a finer sifter will also take longer to sift. Thanks so much, I hope your lawn project goes well!

    @@KatesGarden Thanks! I just make a screen with 1/4" so I'll see if it is too fine. Wanting to use it for mostly cover for adding some lawn seed in thin spots and thought more screened would be good. I bought some 1/2 screen to make another if I find the 1/4" is too large. 🙂

    You built it wrong. You should have made your frame to fit on top of the wheel barrow, but your top sifting frame should have been made of 3/4" thick material & you should have put wheels below it so that you can roll it back & forth on the lower frame. No lifting or holding the upper frame when you shake it to sift out the smaller particles of soil. That's the easier/wiser way to sift soil. Like this: drive.google.com/file/d/1fbQtx-yJImnLUdhM2unnmHeTYSGuA8Ex/view?usp=sharing Nice build & vid though. Keep up the good work!
