i love John's chill vibe and his gorgeous recipes. this channel is one i always love to watch and this cake looks like a real showstopper - it's so cool how bright the colours are! ive never been able to get the purple to look purple myself. it's so absurd how this could possibly garner mean comments.

This is so pretty and cheerful! The purple layer even turned out pretty. Sometimes purple food colouring bakes up to look a bit grey. I’m going to make this and have a rainbow party!

I've seen some adorable unicorn cake decorations made with buttercream and either fondant or modeling chocolate for the horn! it would be super cute combined with a rainbow cake!

I'm SO thankful that I have found your channel. My godchild wanted nothing more than a unicorn rainbow cake as a birthday present, so i decided to do that for her and base the cake on your recipe. It worked perfectly. Perfectly! I seldomly follow a recipe that works so excellent as yours did. I'm not a big fan of buttercream, but I must say it's the best choice for decorating and yours made this little unicorn look fantastic. I hope all kids and of course especially my godchild will love it. Again - THANK YOU!

Wow!! That is the most beautiful cake ever, and I'll bet its as delicious as beautiful.

Refrigeration does not have much effect on slowing the reaction of chemical leaveners. Something that does work that I’ve done, is to mix up the batter and divide it without the chemical leaveners. Then measure out the chemical leaveners per the recipe and weigh them on a gram scale. You can then do the same math that John did here, and divide those leaveners into six small parcels. It goes without saying you should thoroughly sift or mix the leaveners before doing this. Then, as each batch is ready to go in, mix the individual portions with their leaveners right before you add them to the pan and Bob’s your uncle.

A trick when making any kind of icing when you’re adding powdered sugar to butter is to drape a tea towel over the kitchen aide to prevent the explosion of sugar into the air.

For anyone wanting to use natural dyes, the spirulina/algae can provide the blue and green. Pink Dragonfruit powder or FRESH pink Beet juice make VIBRANT hot pink anything. Commercial beet powder should produce more of a red. The blue spirulina + dragonfruit powder make a beautiful purple. Saffron (though expensive) could make yellow, or use dehydrated + powdered citron (aka Buddha's hand) peels. Sweet potato powder could be used for orange. ALTERNATIVELY, you could take vibrant rose petals and draw the liquid from those via soaking (or if you have enough time until you need the cake, make an extract of each rose petal color you need). Violets and pansies are also edible and can provide color. Dandelion blossoms could be used for yellow (dehydrate in the sun and powder them).

@@kubilayacar710 natural ones, no. Artificial Green tends to be less harmful, but stay away from artificial Red dyes (like what's found in candies and kid's cereals and sodas).

Holy cow he really makes it looks SO easy. About a decade ago my partner bought a single boxed cake mix for a "rainbow" cake but that proved to be just a clickbait title because on the back, after he brought it home and expected a really cool rainbow cake, I found incredibly HARD-to-follow instructions that made it seem like it would take HOURS to just PREPARE. But John's version? Holy crap. Even without all those cake pans, this sounds super easy.

I just made that today for my SILs daughters birthday tomorrow. Cant wait to see how it looks when cut.

Beet juice for red (good for red velvet too). For yellow, can you use saffron? Violet is a hard one. Blue you could use concentrated blueberry juice (reduced to syrup). Not sure what to use for orange or green.

It is difficult, my son loves rainbows and I try to make rainbow cakes for him all the time. I would suggest doing a 2-3 layer cake instead and doing a tie die effect. So much more simple to make, and just as beautiful. The six layer cake in this video is more of a second level type of cake
