What laser are you using?
When you put masking tape on top do you have to retest all your settings ?

Generally no, but some tapes are thick enough that you may have to slightly increase your power.

Where do you get your thin wood from? Also, did I see some colored popsicle sticks?

The laser I use is here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paeJ0JifcbKqfZs.html If all you're going is small items like earrings, most CO2 laser will work for you.

Any masking tape should work. I prefer the blue stuff from 3M.
