@GoodEnoughTechReviews

Thank you, yeah the damn cloud was the #1 reason I decided to strip the paint =D Plus I can use window vinyl stickers on the back and change custom designs whenever I get bored... If you use a good paint stripper you'll only need one blade (I used another smaller one for the clean up work after). If I recall correctly, the reddit guide used Acetone, which really isn't strong enough to strip the paint... I'd recommend a heavy commercial duty paint stripper and the paint just basically peels off like you saw in the video.

The acid etching on the surface of the skypad is quite difficult to replicate on a plane of glass tbh, at least to get one that is rough enough to give mouse control, but smooth enough to still offer glide. Take your point though, it'd be an option if you could find the right finished glass.
@suno4947
2 жыл бұрын
What does any of that matter when you buff and polish it away like you did in the video? My point is you're basically encouraging people to ruin an extremely expensive pad with this video when there's a much less expensive route that can be taken.
@GoodEnoughTechReviews
2 жыл бұрын
Acid etching can't be buffed/polished out, it's a surface treatment on the glass, buffing/polishing is to increase speed and glide to my own taste. I would also say 'ruining' is subjective, personally I prefer the clear look and all the scraping/paint stripping does is remove the paint job applied to the rear of the pad, not the surface the mouse contacts. If you can find a decent clear acid-etched glass surface for less money I'd be interested in buying it for science and comparison so please do link.
@suno4947
2 жыл бұрын
Someone liking my last comment made me just realize that A. YT bugged and never posted my last reply, or B. you deleted it. Acid etching is literally just using acid to eat away at the glass to give it a rougher texture. It's not some magical barrier that goes on the glass. So yes, an acid etched piece of glass can be buffed or polished. Buffing is always going to remove material, and depending on the type of polish and the material being polished, material will either be added to fill gaps, or removed to even out the surface. Either way, it's pointless to do something like this to something as expensive as a skypad. And it's not something someone can just undo, if someone tries this and doesn't like it, they'd have to buy an entirely new skypad. That's going to an especially big issue with the 3.0 being worked on right now since it will have a different surface than the 2.0. There's no guarantee they'll continue production of 2.0's after the 3.0 launches. This video is essentially setting someone up to potentially ruin their skypad and possibly be unable to replace it. As for where you can source custom glass panes, a quick google search will bring up plenty of results, or you can search for something local. Sidenote, I do believe I read on some 3rd party reseller or retailer that the skypad surface is laser etched with a specific pattern, I'm not sure if that's accurate info, and it's not really that important to the argument.

@@suno4947 I haven't ever removed a comment so apologies if it didn't post. Sounds like you're very informed on glass/glass pads so will take your word for it. I don't think anything I did to the surface was irreversible as I've cleaned it with isopropyl several times and reapplied polish when it started to slow. Only thing that's irreversible would be the paint removal, but I would assume if someone wanted to do this then they would know the consequences of removing it. Either way, appreciate the concern and hopefully if someone is apprehensive about making this mod, they can read down and see your commentary in the comments.
