Of all the tutorials I've seen, this is the most helpful. I'm currently using Peel Away 1 to remove all the paint layers on the exterior a 100 year old house but don't want to repoint with the red mortar already used. I don't want to really cover my bricks but overfilling, them and scraping off the drying white mortar will allow me to repoint the areas I need to while covering the red mortar in other areas. This is great, thanks!

Wow, this is so detailed! Unfortunately white type s mortar seems impossible to find. Lots of gray type s, and white in other types but not really together.

Agreed, I heard that some Home Depots carry it but wasn't able to find any in my city. I was able to find the white mortar at a local brick yard called Marvel Building and Masonry Supply. I'd start looking into a masonry supply stores. Once you find it, it is super cheap, like $11 for a large bag. Good luck!

MAEPI Porcelain Tile Mortar works fine, comes in white, and is easy to find.

Did you use both grey and white mortar? In parts of the video the group looks grey and the schmere looks white

Hi Hailey, I just used white mortar. When the mortar is wet it looks grey but dries white.

I cannot find white mortar (type s ) around me. Will thin set work ok ?

Dana, I'm not sure if the thin set will work, ( It may be too thin) I couldn't find the type S white either at our local big box hardware stores but found it at a building supply store called Marvel Building and Masonry supplies. I would probably reach out to someone that works with setting bricks and ask them or Google. lol

Would I be able to paint the brick the base color you have which is like a brown orangish color.. I'm trying to make that look but the brick I have has been painted white

Definitely, you can paint the brick in reverse. I would recommend using chalk paint as it has a rough brick like texture to start with. I would not seal it with anything as it has a a more natural look with a sealer. First clean your brick really well. Then start painting!

I don't believe this technique would give you the same look as my fireplace. However, I personally like the look of old world charm so I think adding some chunky texture on a smooth white fireplace would look pretty awesome as well.

I think bricks schmear is the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life. Sure some people like it but if you’re going to sell something there are many people who just cannot stand that look. So I am asking please please does anyone know how to remove the stuff and get the brick back to its original beauty. Because there’s a house I’m wanting to buy in an order to sell it they did this to the house now it’s horrible looking. I would not mind buying the house but how much will it cost me to remove that ugly stuff

A video teaching you HOW to do this probably isn’t the best place to ask that question. But it’s mortar, so it’s pretty permanent...I think your best option to change it would be painting over the German smear making it all white with some texture 🤷‍♀️

Power washer, hard bristle brushes not steal it will leave rust behind, brass or plastic. Chemical brush Another brick to rub against the smear aswell and most important part muriatic acid... now this comes in many forms contact your masonry supplier in your area for the chemical they recomend, (most likley 600 masonry cleaner) ratio the acid 5 to 1 and work your way down to the correct ration (usually 3 to 1) apply with chemical brush from a bucket let it cook for a minute scrub the wall with your other utensils during this time, then aim higher and farther Way with your power washer to rinse the acid down the wall... now move closer 6 to 12 inches from the wall with a fan tip (yellow one) trace the moarter joints back and forth and down to the next course and so on. Repeat as necessary and put alot of ass into the scrubbing. You will most likley need to grind and retuckpoint the whole damn house too if you don't want a trace of white. And that smear will be on there like a son of a bitcj cause it cured there X amount of years ago.
