I failed to discuss the cause of the fuse blowing in this video so I recorded a follow up video. This follow up video not only discusses the issue causing the fuse to blow but also takes a deeper look at additional things that could cause your dryer to stop working.
Original Posting: My dryer stopped working mid cycle. I pushed the button and it wouldn't do anything at all. The dryer still had power because the light came on when I opened the door. This video shows my step by step process for determining what is preventing your dryer from working properly.

I had my own Appliance repair business for 37 years and no one ever mentions this but do not open the dryer door while the dryer is running!! If the temperature is at max heat and you open the door it can blow the thermal fuse. Always turn the timer to the cool down position for at least 1 minute before you open the door!

Why would opening dryer door blow a fuse? It sounds like it caused the fuse to shrink too fast, or something.

Thank you so much for your video. This is exactly what I need. I tested the dryer by connecting the two blue wires and turned on my dryer really quick just to see if it turned on just like you did. Dryer turned on, turned it off immediately and disconnected the two blue wires. And now I know it was the problem so I got on Amazon and ordered 2 fuses. It will be here in 2 days and I will have my dryer back. You saved me a lot of money. Thank you again. If course I subscribed and hit the notification bell. Have a wonderful day. Liz

First, thank you for the video. It has helped quite a bit but my dryer seems to have an underlying issue. When I went to use it there was no power at all. Checked the breaker and tested the cord and both were fine. Took the back off and emptied vent in back. Took off the Thermal fuse and taped the wires and it worked. Replaced the thermal fuse and hooked everything back up and it worked for a couple loads. The next day it wouldn't run. Checked the breaker and the cord. The cord tested 240 from right to left but only 10-11 from right to middle and from middle to left. The outlet (3prong) tested 240 from right to left and 120 right to middle and from middle to left. So I replaced the cord and retested. The cord then showed the correct voltage. The dryer ran for a couple loads but the next day it wouldn't run. Now the new cord is testing 240 from right to left but only 10-11 from right to middle and from middle to left. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Or what I should try next?

Jenny Orr That’s great! If your thermal fuse failed, you likely have an air flow issue. Check your vent hose and remove the fan shroud to ensure nothing is preventing the fan from moving.

@@TightWadDIY Yes! Thank You. I have already blown out the back and my air vent system is clear..I will remove the fan shroud then later when I get home with the fuse. Thanks again.. !

So I dried some pants the day before and my dryer was working fine. Today I went to hit the start button on my Whirlpool dryer and I heard a very feint click. It didn't sound like the normal start button noise. After watching a few videos online, people said mostly likely it's your thermal fuse. No one ever said I could bypass the circuit just as a test like you showed in your video. I did exactly as you did and my dryer started up. So now I know it's my thermal fuse and I will have to order it. No store around here sells them. Thanks for that information about a temporary bypass for testing purposes only!

You’re welcome. Now make sure you find your clog that made it overheat and blow the fuse.

My dryer went out and after checking the door sensor (which I replaced a few years ago), I did a Google search and your video popped up. Turns out it was the thermal fuse. We have a store in town called U Fix It. I called them at 5:20 (they close at 6). They had the part, which cost more than what you paid (about $17). I raced over, picked it up, replaced the old one, and I’m back up and running! Thanks for this video! Saved me time and about $100 or more labor cost! What’s also cool is my dryer is a Kenmore like yours, very similar.

Make sure you check out Part 2. If you don’t find the source of the issue, it will blow again.

I also had to do a ton of cleanup. A lot of lint. I did a thorough cleaning.
