Easy Exercises to Help Your Baby Roll Over Back to Belly

Here is one of my favorite exercises to help a baby roll over from their back to their belly. Babies often get stuck on this step and may need assistance from their parents using these proactive play exercises to help baby roll over. Maybe you're worried because your baby is not rolling over at 6 months or not rolling over at 5 months or not rolling over at 4 months and you're not sure WHEN you should actually take action or if there is action to take. This video will help!

I like a lot the way you explain stuff and I have 2 questions. One directly related to the video, and one less so: 1. My 3.5 weeks adjusted baby started rolling on her own from back to tummy, for a couple of days. Only on the left side so far but I'm not concerned about this after such a short time, as left also seems to be her dominant side for playing on her back and bringing stuff to her mouth. I am curious though if it's ok if her move is not at all similar to what you describe. She is first bringing her legs up, leans her legs to the left and the rest of her body follows until she's on her side, and only after that, she is sort of pushing her shoulder down. 2. In the image of the parent hiking through the woods with the baby in the front facing carrier you can see the baby's legs dangling when the parent moves. I generally learned that this position is really not recommended for the health of the hips, and baby should only be carried with his face toward you, with his knees resting on your body higher than his....tushy. Do you have another opinion on this? I know our LO would love to face out towards the world but until now I've been afraid to do this

Hi Roxana! Thanks so much for the comment. YES -- so for baby wearing (to be honest I had a very hard time finding even some clips on canva that illustrated what I wanted to say that were even tolerable baby wearing, so this one is definitely not perfect but was kind of the least worst?, I try to be really careful with this but am not always perfect!). For baby wearing the general consensus that I have heard is obviously to never wear a baby in a baby carrier before the manufacturer says is appropriate but even then, forward facing not until 6 months is ideal from a hip standpoint, prior to then the "M" position of the hips is more ideal to assist in their development. After 6 months, the hips are a little more stable, but you want to have baby either independently sitting or pretty close. That being said, for short periods I have had parents have babies face outward less than six months without any consequences as long as the baby carrier guidelines are being followed, so I do think there is "optimal/gold standard," and a semi-possibly okay middle ground. I do think the baby sensory system is still something to be mindful of when outward facing, so if baby seems overwhelmed first thing I would do is face you or place them on your back. At 3.5 weeks (maybe you meant months?) baby is super early for rolling, it they're 3.5 months, then a little early but not as much. I would not worry about quality of rolling until approximately 5 months, though, since it may be messy as they learn and that's totally fine. If baby is 3.5 weeks and rolling, like they are using tension and not muscle strength and I recommend having baby's flexibility looked at by a therapist (peds PT or infant massage therapist, etc) to make sure that tension isn't the main tool they're using. I do think you likely meant 3.5 months, in which case it's totally normal to start rolling (although most kids do not start until 4ish months+ some do start as early as 3 months). My book Tummy Time and Learning to Roll has all the info you would need and a ton of play positions if you're looking for a resource to make sure your little has everything they need for rolling amzn.to/3Q8dg5U (affiliate link) Hope this is helpful, feel free to send more comments if you have more questions or want more clarification!

@@DrLaurenBaker Thank you for your response. I did mean 3.5 months, yes 😔 I was probably too tired... And it's actually 3.5 months adjusted. 4.5 months since birth. So I don't think she's particularly early. But I was wondering about the quality of the roll, as you put it...

For quality of rolling my book Tummy Time & Learning to Roll - amzn.to/3u2NKqk (affiliate) is going to go through every single step of rolling and is the most comprehensive resource that will talk about the two phases for each rolling beginner vs mastered for back to belly and belly to back. The other option is to book an online parent consultation and we can look at the rolling style via video or in person and that can be booked here anytime: drlaurenbaker.clientsecure.me/request/service But truthfully rolling quality will improve from 4 months and should be mastered between 5-6 months

Is it safe to do these exercises if baby has upper tightness? My baby has tightness in his arms. Do I need to address that first?

Hi Jonesie, thanks so much for the comment. Its kind of a yes and response - you can do this even if there is tightness if you do it to the babys tolerance, you can support with a hand under hand technique to assist, and likely starting in the sidelying position first will be easiest. That being said the underlying tightness needs to be solved for best function especially with rolling and crawling. Arm tightness can also be trunk tightness. I go through all the arm and trunk mobility screens in my book 📚 Tummy Time & Learning to Roll - amzn.to/3u2NKqk (affiliate) which would be the best resource for you. If baby is over six months, has tightness that doesn’t resolve with the exercises in the book quickly or is impacting other things pediatric physical therapy can help get babies moving better and resolve tightness. Hope this helps explain things a bit more! You can book an online parent consultation if you have more questions or would like more information on how to help resolve tightness or screen for tightness anytime with this link: drlaurenbaker.clientsecure.me/request/service
