Terrific video educating us on how you manufacturer your cutting boards. Like you I have a simple garage workshop in which my tools are limited as well as the working space. The shop safety and PPE is important too. Nice looking cutting board too. Thank you well done.

Great content, really enjoy your builds! I built my first edge grain board this weekend, and built a router jig very similar to yours to do the handles on the end of the board. Hope to see you make more cutting boards in the future!

I do love a French cleat wall. Just makes the shop feel cozy. The hubs got me a drum sander as a gift because he saw how much sanding I do. Game changer!I’m not sure I’ll show it alot in videos because it’s just not one of those things people typically have as a hobbyist. Please make videos! We need more woodworking content. I like that style of handle, allows use of both sides of the board. If you have one, Try a small curve scraper for the handle and grooves, much faster.

I honestly do not know how this works. I have subscribed to your channel and clicked on the bell but I have done the same thing to many other woodworkers. Once I have watched a video and then move on to another I never see the previous one again so if I comment, like i am doing here, then I never know if you or anyone answers. Just wanted to mention that it is a good idea to wipe down those exotic species with acetone before glue up as they tend to be oily and the oil can interfere with the glue adhesion. I find, for instance, there will be a lot of residue on the paper towel when I wipe down padauk, for example. Nice vid, thanks.

Just found your channel. Really nice and with simple tools. Not like these other videos with drum sanders, 4,000 dollar table saws, etc etc. I made a few boards but mixed in red oak and all the oak split.

Yes! I have one and it just sits in the corner and I never use it because the surface isn’t flat:( Apparently I think a folding card table is better:). I am building a new bench and it’s almost complete. It’s going to be amazing! And I plan to put a video out when I’m finished. Glad you enjoyed the video.

You actually went over board on you sanding part with raising the grain. I just sand upto 120 then raise the grain then 400 and then season it. Never any problems

The 2 crosscut sleds for my table saw are from kings fine woodworking. I sort of just made up the designs for the router sleds that I use for flattening and for making handles. I keep meaning to make those sleds again and do a quick video about them because they were so easy to make and super useful. It’s a dust right conversion port. It converts 2 1/2” to 2 1/4” to fit my shop vac hose perfectly. I got it at Rockler.

Save your saw dust and put it on for the glue cleanup, and you can clean up as soon as you're clamped.

I typically only do juice grooves if requested. Most of my boards on my channel are experiments to try out new patterns rather than builds for clients. But on my instagram I show client builds and I’ve done some juice grooves if you want to check them out. Thanks ❤️ you have made my day!

I love goldens. We have 2 and I’m not sure I will ever want another breed. Luckily not from any experiences at home 😂 In my “real job” we use it as a medical treatment for animals. But you know dogs, they’ll try anything once so I thought I’d share the knowledge. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I have seen all your videos, they are very nice. I've seen many videos of people, but what I don't understand all the time is why the cutting board gets an oil bath of 30 minutes 2 or 3 times, so a total of one and a half hours. Why is the cutting board not simply put in the oil bath once for an hour and a half?

Great question! I only do one mineral oil bath for 5 minutes and then let it dry overnight. Then I apply wood wax (which some people don’t do but I find it seals the board better). The oil and wax happen right at the end. There would be no reason to do multiple mineral oil baths in my opinion. The board is completely saturated after one and typically takes all day to absorb the oil that is just on the surface from the one 5 minute bath. I do, however, raise the grain multiple times between sanding grits but this is done using water.

@@FireflyWoodworking Yes, that's what I thought too. It seems to me to give a good oil bath once, but also enough to let it soak in for 24 hours. That's why I got quite confused about the multiple oil baths that some people do. I will receive my end grain cutting board on Tuesday. I've been researching how the cutting board is made for weeks in order to better understand the product. Like you I plan to use Walrus wax, only I wonder how many mL is needed for 60 x 40 x 4.3 cm and that of course for all sides of the cutting board

Not very much really. For the mineral oil it took me 3 gallons to fill the container I dunk in but you could use less with a smaller container or by just pooling it on the board instead of dunking. When I reapply to the board in my kitchen it only takes about 1 cup. For the walrus oil wood wax, I bought a 3oz container and did about 15 boards and I was being very generous with it. Congrats on the new board!

Now if you were to sell this board..how much would you charge for it? Just wondering because I saw a board on Facebook for $150.00 and thought that it was overpriced...I asked the seller on DM if this price was right and he said are you kidding me..have you seen the price of lumber lately and said yes the price is correct.

Great question! I priced this board at $100. All of my prices for my board designs can be found on my website. I price based on board feet rather than species of wood used because that just makes things more complicated. Also edge grain boards like this are priced less than end grain which are much more time consuming to make.

Really dangerous table saw technique and loose clothing around hands.
