As a native English speaker with some wire working history. I know when you work harden with hammer and anvil the wire will get a glossy appearance as you flatten the surface (slightly). I have heard of people using a wax or other protection layer before hammering - this is mostly unnecessary as if your hammering does leave some blemish you can use a 150+ grit sandpaper to clean it up
