STEPS
- Cast on 30 stitches (size small, add x2 stitches to go up a size M, add X4 for L etc)
- x4 rows rib stitch
- x15 rows stocking stitch
- Cast off two stitches purl wise
- Cast off two stitches knit wise
- DECREASE *Purl 1, purl 2 together, continue until you have 3 stitches remaining. Slip, slip, purl 2 together, purl the last 1.
- Knit all stitches*
- Repeat the section inside the ** until you have 12 stitches left ton the needle. (If you sized up, add the same number of stitches here.)
- Use the same method to create the back, but make it x2 stitches larger than the front.
-Cast off at the neck and use crochet hook to create x10 chains to form a strap.

You can definitely use 10mm needles :) Depending on what size you are knitting you might need to add a couple of stitches, also your tension. Try a square of x10 stitches and measure it with a tape measure. Then measure how wide you want it to be on you and you can calculate the number of stitches x x

Hi I’m just wondering can you do this with smaller needles please?

  • @chantalbellmont6937

yes, with thinner yarn and more stitches. You'll end up doing more rows, to accommodate for the smaller stitches, so I recommend knitting a little square swatch first to count how many stitches and rows your new yarn and needles knit to calculate the changes you'll need to make to the pattern.

Hi Imogen, In your video you say you’re using size 10 & 12 knitting needles however at the beginning when you talk about possibly using a different yarn, you say ‘ you’re going to have to make sure it works on 12 mm knitting needles’- which would be size 17 right? If you could clarify which needle size are needed, I would appreciate it!

You can, but you might need to add some more stitches so that it will be wide enough :)

Hi Imogen , loved your tutorial! made a crop top following your instructions and now my daughter (13) wants one for summer. How many stitches would you advise to cast for a XS size top? I got some Wool and the Gang 'Tina tape yarn'. Thank you so much !! Claudia xx

Hi Lovely! That yarn will be fab for summer, you will need more stitches on smaller needles. I would make a test square 10x10 stitches and then measure it in cm. Then you can calculate how many stitches you need to start with. Hope this helps! x x
