I’m intrigued by this build. I want to play higher end games, but I can’t be bothered with appearances, nor am I much concerned with anything past 1060 resolution. I’d probably be happy with a step down from that.

I love this and seeing as how my laptop recently took a crap on me I've been researching how to build the cheapest but most solid gaming pc possible and I have to say you could likely get some better equipment both in terms of the cpu and graphic cards. You do run into some issues with power but nothing that can't be sorted out for a decent cost. I've been eyeing amd components because the amount of cores and threads plus clock speed you get for your money makes it so much better of a value cpu wise vs intel and then on the gpu side same goes for amd gpus vs nvidia but due to the fact that there's way more use nvidias out there then used amds you might actually have a easier time finding a sweet deal on a used not so old gen nvidia card. What i want to see is if making the jump from gtx vs rtx makes a big difference and also what is more important gpu clock speed or vram in order to get good graphics and gaming experience. Whats crazy to me is that bit rate doesn't seem to matter as much since most cards after 2020 in the 20 series and up will have a decent enough bit rate so that really won't matter so much as some of the other specs. I've also been debating going the mini pc route and possibly getting a z1 extreme set up or something similar and if that integrated graphics card isn't enough to run many newer games on medium settings then maybe experiment with a egpu because I really like the idea of have the gpu external and being able to switch it to many devices as I start to buy other things like a mobile handheld gaming set up like the legion go for example. In fact I'm thinking getting a legion go and a egpu is like the ultimate best of all worlds set up.

So, the first issue--and this is a serious question--is to interrogate why you want a gaming laptop. If it's because of something like, say, you're a college student that goes back to your parents' house every weekend, that'd be a situation where it makes more sense to put your desktop PC budget towards the gaming laptop, and one of the few situations where that really makes sense. If it's Just Because, then you might want to second-guess how important a gaming laptop really is compared to spending the money on a desktop PC and then getting a netbook or other lightweight, iGPU-based laptop on the side if you need a portable computer. It's worth noting that laptops without a dGPU tend to be lighter and have better battery life than gaming laptops. If you're insistent, that budget is going to give you trouble (gaming laptops are bloody spendy), and you might be looking for something like a used gaming laptop or--depending upon how important it is that it's a proper laptop as opposed to just a portable gaming device--a handheld PC like the Steam Deck or something.

RX480/580/590 were hot, loud, and thirsty for what is now considered slow. Hot loud and thirsty is fine when bew.. but when old its rather inconvenient. GTX1060 was the power efficient option. And newer cards donitveven better.

I know this might sound crazy, but any chance you can do a build that’s $600-$800 that can play medium-high settings with 60-120 fps???

my dell xps 8700 with a chinese 8gb 580(570) and the stock intel 4790 does that. It even plays 4k at medium-low settings. Bought the system for 350 at a local shop last year, paid $110 for the 580 (ausirix) and put in a evga power unit, though I did the psu before the GPU just for fun so might not even need that, in fact I know for a fact you can power the 580 on the stock psu. either way that is a 450-500 build without the power unit and 550-600 with the psu, The psu is 650w bronze if memory serves me right, because the power required for the 8700 is weird and only some psu are compatible with the mother board. (google it). Though that lands you no windows 11 upgrade path, and only the 4790k is compatible and faster by only by 10%. I love it.
