East Coast Snowstorm Time Lapse 22 - 24 January 2016

Фильм және анимация

Scenes of the snowstorm in Loudoun County, Virginia, where we had over two feet of snow.
For the main sequence, frames were captured one per minute, 3195 frames total covering over 53 hours. Images were pre-processed using ImageMagick and encoded at 24 frames per second using ffmpeg. Smaller clips were captured every 30 seconds, pre-processed and encoded in the same way. Cuts were edited together using Shotcut.

it is quite hard to move all that snow with snow shovel only. More than 1 time, especially if it is not fluffy but wet and heavy. So you wont be happy soon. Roads will become 1 way only, cars will stuck in snow every mile.

Enjoy no snow! Seriously. It looks pretty and Christmasy, sure. Maybe come visit, and experience skiing or sledding. BUT, I can tell you as someone from Cleveland, Ohio, USA (somewhere that gets a lot of snow), it’s not that great. Here’s how a typical blizzard day goes. - You set your alarm early for the morning to prepare. - Wake up an hour earlier than usual, have a quick breakfast. - It’s roughly -15° C (for a common example) and the snow is coming down inch by inch every hour, so you take 15 minutes to put on boots, a coat, a scarf, a hat, gloves, and anything else to keep warm. - Get outside and dust all the snow off your car, and then scrape any layers of ice. Turn on the car with heat so it doesn’t further accumulate. - Shovel your driveway, which can have as much as 1 or 2 feet of snow from overnight. Takes time, up to an hour and is very exhausting. Otherwise your car will get stuck. - Your skin is dry, your hands are numb, and barely mobile. - Finally you leave, and you’re practically in a space suit on the way to work. - Despite the plow teams efforts that they’re trained to do since it’s a normal thing, the road is dangerous and not everyone cooperates properly. You drive slow but you still slide and other people are sliding. Sometimes might see a car in a ditch or crashed into a median on the freeway. - You finally arrive at work. Time to take off your literal space suit of layers which are now wet from the heat in your car and your own body. Your skin is wet and clammy. - Work your shift and possibly repeat the process of dusting and scraping your car all over again as well as putting your gear back on.

snow as a tourist is amazing especially if you are seeing it for the first time. But as a resident, it's pretty annoying. You have to drive 5 miles per hour, cars sliding everywhere. one snowstorm(not even our worst) it took 1.5 HOURS to get home from school on the school bus. the school is 2.5miles(4 km) and normally takes 5 minutes...

I am a central Va resident a bit below Loudoun County. Drive wise it's not far but apparently makes a big difference in weather. I can tell from the footage the temp was close to 32 F. based on how quick your driveway thawed out the moment sunlight hit it. So one/two days pass before things are back close to normal. Maybe this season 2018/2019 it will be much colder and take days to thaw out. I grew up next to Winchester VA. It's north enough to get those freezing temps and snow that doesn't melt for days. I kind of miss that part of my childhood.

At 2:20 When the sun shined on the snow. It looked so Beautiful and Bright. I live in Victor Montana. We had have some winters where a blizzard would come and it would snow deep. We have a dry cold so our snow is never wet and heavy, but light and sparkly. The blizzard goes on for days the snow gets up to 12 inches. Then an Arctic front comes in and it gets very freezing below zero and the clouds shrivel up, and the next day there is a clear blue vibrant sky with not even a tiny cloud to be seen. The sun shines so bright, and it is too cold for the snow to melt at all, instead the snow sparkles like Star Dust in the sun.

Now this is a snowstorm. I've been looking at timelapses where it will snow 4-6" and the captions will say "Blizzard timelapse" or "28 inches of snow in 24 hours" and it will just be regular snowfalls with little or no wind. This has buried plants, buried mailboxes, buried fire hydrants, buried cars, big drifts, big snow mounds and big plows. This is what a snowstorm timelapse should be.

We here in Montana call those Cold Snowy Sunny Days Winter Wonder Weather Patterns. We rarely get them, but they are oh so Beautiful when we do. When Our Winter Wonder Weather Patterns end it clouds up again, gets very warm like 45 degrees, and then it rains. Within 2 days the snow is completely gone from The Rainy Thaw.

I used to get confused as to why does the snow accumulate on the pavement first instead of the grass. But I figured out why. It’s the type of snowflakes that are falling. This is a dryer type of snow. I’m in south Texas and when it does snow it’s almost always the heavy wet variety. I’ve only seen dry snow like this(in the video) 3 times and it wasn’t very much.

based on this video it seems very few people have snow blowers. it's clearly not a cost thing, is it the location, you don't get snow very often? if it is, i'd still keep a $400 snow blower tucked in the back of the garage for days like this haha. props on doing that all by hand, i'd have a heart attack.
