"East Broad Top Narrow Gauge Railroad" (Awesome Echos!!!)

Ойын-сауық

We take a trip to the East Broad Top Narrow Gauge railroad in orbisonia PA. The EBT it the oldest and one of a few operating narrow gauge railroads east of the Mississippi River. The engine that pulls the days train is 2-8-2 #15. Built by the Baldwin locomotive works of Philadelphia Pennsylvania in February 1914. She has an operating boiler pressure pf 180 LBS. The railroad was chartered April 16, 1856 to mine and transport coal from the rich fields of Broad Top Mountain. The railroad did become a reality until the Rockhill Iron & Coal Company was incorporated. In 1919, the EBT was purchased by Madeira Hill & Company. At Mt. Union, MHC established a coal cleaning plant and a "timber transfer." Originally, the timber transfer was used to transfer wood from narrow to standard gauge cars from the McKelvey Brothers Logging Company. When the McKelvey Brothers went out of business in 1933, the timber transfer was used to change the trucks under standard gauge cars to move on the EBT rails until abandonment. Right after closing in 1956, the Kovalchick Salvage Company of Indiana, PA, a large railroad scrapper, bought the railroad and all its assets. In 1960, passenger service was restored to celebrate the bicentennials of Orbisonia and Rockhill. The EBT was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and remains the most comlete and authentic narrow gauge site in America and the last original narrow gauge east of the Rockies. In 2009 the nonprofit EBT Preservation Association signed a three year contract to operate the trains of the EBT with an option to purchase. (Information from the EBT web site)... www.ebtrr.com/history.html.... Please sit back and relax and enjoy the the production!

Beautiful country there, and I love those shots in the woods with long looks at the engine coming. To bad those shots show the wacky tracks the most noticable. Any faster they would wobble right off the narrow tracks I think. Thanks for the look.

Some have gone to good homes elsewhere, the Cumbres and Toltec, Durango and Silverton, and Georgetown loop all use ex EBT hoppers in MOW service to dump ballast. But that is only a few, there are just so many of them.

@HikaroTakayama Thats really neat! Last time i was at Robertsdale the yard was just de-treed and started putting some ties here and there. Must make a trip back there soon! and My buddy models the Reading Railroad in LEGO's, they have made a T-1, G-2sa, P7 4-4-2 Atlantic and a Reading Ramble train. Its realy neat and best of luck with your M-7:D Pictures one day?

The East Broad top was the first train I ever rode (I was 4 years old at the time), and have ridden it many times since... I was there last weekend, but couldn't get my girlfriend's butt out of bed in time to ride the train, so we had to settle for riding their 1920-something Fairmont speeder on the Robertsdale branch... I'll post the video soon... I really like this RR, and am planning on modeling the M-7 Diesel in LEGO (Ln3, lol).

I am pleased that the produced this video - because I think that the EBT will never run again - after 2013. Just not enough money to run it I guess.

Orbisonia, Pa. located at the intersections of US 522 and state 994 ( I think it's 994). Along Blacklog River, before it joins with Aughwick River. Or, one could do like I did here in Iowa, look it up on a map.

I rode the EBT about 22 yrs ago and loved every minute of it. Planning to take my son there. Does it still leave you off at the picnic area or did they extend the line? There was more track to go beyond the picnic area if I remember correctly

@John McCardell There were funds in 1994 but they didn't know how to be eligible for them, but the state had 30 million authorized they just didn't know how to be eligible for it.

@John McCardell I really am concerned about the tunnels. One of them has a roof collapse just inside the south portal so you have to essentially build a partial new tunnel. Soooo. sad.

That has really been sad. First the RR museum of PA decided to settle in Strasburg instead of Mt.Union, taking away the owner's expansion energy. Then, they didn't know. how to be eligible for the 30 million in 1994 and the public entities that tried to buy it didn't get along with him. That's why one of the tunnels has.a roof collapse behind the south portal necessitating a major overhaul. Soooo sad. Something had better go right for this poor railroad.

@@jdgfilms9595 Yes and all but 5 miles of it has been derelict for 60 years, because the RR Museum Of PA declined Mt Union, then they didn't know how to be eligible for the 30 million in 1994. All that has had a terrible effect on the entire railroad, especially the second tunnel, which has a roof collapse inside the.south portal, necessitating a major overhaul. If you are religious pray for a miracle on the railroad involving the tunnels.
