I thought November was Grandstream month Willie. So far, only one video. Keep your promise! Huge anticipation here. Anxiously waiting for more info about your GRANDSTREAM training classes too. I'm sure I'm not alone!

Thanks for the review. I am closing on a house in a few weeks and there are a few outlets which are not grounded and they were grandfathered in. I want to replace them and this will be quite helpful to easily identify which breaker goes to them.

The first thing I did when moving into my house, before even bringing in furniture, was to map out the entire electrical system and type up a schedule of what was on each breaker. It's crazy how things can be added over time in the strangest ways, but now I know exactly what will happen when any breaker is turned off. Saves so much aggravation in the future.

It would have been more complete to leave the tester on the "questionable" breaker while turning off the breaker to see if the circuit going dead would immediately register with the transmitter. Just another confirmation when dealing with live circuits.

@@littlecandle33 This is something I tried, but what I did not do was calibrate the tester, so I am going to do that and also turn off the suspect breaker again (as you are indicating and I had guessed before). Thanks for the confirmation on that idea.

I am in the middle of mapping out every breaker to outlets and switches in my townhouse. Every owner and electrician before me did a poor job and I want to move/sell this place in a safe condition for the next owner. I try to over-engineer and leave things in a better state than I received/found them. What can I say, it's the boy scout I am.

I'm happy for you, Willie. My Klein unit is garbage. It never works reliably. Often it doesn't work at all other times it works erratically! It should be a great tool, but I've found it to be useless garbage. I'm envious of your results. BTW, I did everything right. It not hard. Even when I know the right breaker and turn off all the other breakers it still doesn't work. Then as if by magic, it may kick in if I leave it on the specific breaker for over 30 seconds in attempt to run various tests on it. Then I move it and come back and it fails again. I could go on and on.

Both plug receptacles in the same outlet may not be on the same breaker as well. Either a non contact electrical probe or a known good load should be plugged into each socket at least before proceeding. One never knows how a house is wired so double or triple check everything.

  • @warronfrench8163

Is it better to move the tester down the metal covering next to the breaker to determine which breaker it is? Or absolute best to run it over each breaker switch directly, for accuracy?

Ryobi sales a device that you plug in into the outlet push a button and it will trip the beaker in a split second. The only downside it does not work when the neutral is share with two circuits. It does work from time to time when you pressed 2 to 3 times. The good thing is if it does not trip the breaker you know that the neutral is being share.

At any hardware store you can get an adapter that screws in a standard light sock and makes it a non grounded plug. Then you can plug right into the light. This model is MUCH better than the lower model IMO. The lower model is dark green and the handheld part is just flat. This one is much easier to use because of the tip. Good luck man!

I have a 220 amp service in my house and I am trying to find the best option to determine what runs on what circuit in the house? I thought this video and tool was cool to determine what outlets run on certain circuits on the breaker… but I would also like to find out how to test light switches, fans, oven, dish washer, hot water heater etc. I would love to find out the name of the diagnostic tools and where to buy them. I see this gentleman included the name of the tool and where to buy it.

My outlet is dead. Is it possible to trace a dead outlet or light switch. If it is possible can you describe how to do both (for an outlet and a switch)?

not with this tool. you'd need a wire toner. more than likely your outlet is a downstream of a gfci outlet that is tripped

Always use a Inductive Voltage Tester to confirm that the power has been turned off to the respective circuit. Also known as a Hot Stick. Fluke makes a good Hot Stick. Licensed Mechanical Contractor.
