Easily Carried & Concealed .44MAG Revolvers

Спорт

This is a not-so-short video detail my thoughts on how it is easier to carry and conceal a .44mag revolver than most people might think. especially if you get the right .44mag revolver.

Glad someone said it, it's ok to carry something like this just because you can and want too. I know this is an old video but I still appreciate it.

Being able to handle the recoil of a firearm is a huge factor in deciding what to carry. Hitting with a .380 is WAY better than missing with a .44mag.

I think y’all are missing the point of what he’s saying….he’s not saying you shouldn’t carry a 44, he’s saying carry a gun that you can handle the recoil. If you can’t handle a 44 a .380 might be better because you’re more likely to hit your target.

I carry a 3.75" Ruger Vaquero .44 magnum loaded with 320gr wide long nose hard cast lead bullets in a .44 special case using accurate #9 powder. I recommend watching FortuneCookie45LC's series on the .44 special. It helped me develope my carry load and is full of great information. I wanted a low velocity, heavy defensive load that wouldn't destroy my hearing. I prefer revolvers myself and love single action revolvers. It's not for everyone, takes a lot of practice. Good luck fellow .44 lovers !

I find the round cylinder and profiles of even an N-frame S&W fits and conceals much easier than the flat-sided full-sized auto pistols. I carried a Colt Commander when I first acquired a CCW. I got a steal-deal on a S&W 66-1 at a pawn shop. Picked up several holsters and after carrying the S&W 66 one day, the Commander was retired. The K-frame S&W was just SOOO much more comfortable to carry! And speed strips and speed loaders were so much easier to hide and deal with than extra 1911 mags! Plus range practice time is so much quicker and efficient with a revolver than an auto pistol. No mags to load, no feeding issues to deal with, no ammo issues to deal with, no dealing with limp wristing failures by the friend I took along to shoot. My auto pistols have been retired to the status of "range toys to play with" while my revolvers are now the serious weapons I trust to save my life. While it is possible for revolvers to fail, in truth at my local range, while I have seen multiple auto pistol failures and issues every range trip I have ever been on, I have NEVER seen a revolver failure other than dud ammo. And dud ammo is cleared with a trigger stroke on the revolver, but requires time and two hands with an auto pistol. "Time and two hands" = dead on the scene with unfired, fully loaded auto pistol laying by your side in reality. Rant and mouth frothing over.

+Brian Fortin Revolvers are making a comeback it seems. The J-frames & equivalents have been there solidly all along. Have personally observed many CCW holders return to the J-Frame after experiencing how finicky and unreliable small 9mm & 40 auto pistols are. The 410/45 Colt revolvers have brought many back into revolvers who are now starting to explore 38/357/44/45 revolver options to 9/40/45 auto pistols. IMO the most reliable and effective bullet for self defense is a large 85%caliber meplat flat point bullet, balanced in meplat & velocity to keep bare 10% gelatin maximum penetration at 18-19 inches max. Such bullets fail miserably in auto pistols but work beautifully in revolvers. An 85% caliber meplat 44/45 200gr bullet at 1000fps will blow permanent 1 inch diameter tunnels completely thru 2&4-legged critters for practically instant stops, as proven on 200+pound hogs. Have seen 200 pound hogs shake off 9/40/45 JHP auto pistol hits like they were bug bites! The 200gr 44/45 @ 1000fps is very controllable and easy to shoot yet the large meplat flat-nosed bullet does incredible instantly effective damage. Going above 200 grains in 44/45 gives overpenetration for self-defense but is great for hunting big critters. An 85% meplat FN-bullet 255gr 45 Colt at 1000fps for example will punch clear thru 24 inches of bare 10% gelatin, leaving a big hole behind, while a 200gr version stays in the 18-19 inch penetration range that is ideal for self-defense.

I had to laugh. Recently in a CCW class the instructor stated revolvers jam more than a semi-auto. I held my tongue; the class had gone on long enough. Oh, I have to add I carry a Taurus 6" .357 M66 in a shoulder holster often. No problem concealing it and I have the fire power needed WHEN I need it.

I often carry the 629 S&W performance center 2.6" .44 Magnum in an IWB holster and a heavy duty concealment belt (LEATHER) which if you carry you should have. It's actually comfortable. I use a concealment vest even in our hot Florida weather. Excellent set up for the revolver advocate.

For OWB carry, try the Galco "Concealable" open top holster. I carry my Smith & Wesson, 4" barrelled, beautifully Blued .44 magnum "Mountain Gun" for concealed carry up here in Wisconsin as soon as the flannel shirts come out. But we are an open & concealed carry State, so I don't give a Damn if someone does notice it. I usually keep .44 specials in it, with 2 speed loaders of high octane .44 magnums in my pocket, for when shit gets real. The .44 special is nothing to sneeze at either.I keep a dedicated.44 special 2 & 1/2" barrelled, 5 shot "Bulldog Pug" as my car gun, it never leaves my SUV. Prefer 5 shots of .44 special over just 5 shots of most other calibers !

I applied for my NYS pistol permit 9/12. The wait time is 6-8 months for approval. I defiently want a revolver. 44's are a lot more expensive to shoot. I might go with a 686 S&W 3" barrel. A happy medium for accuracy, cost of ammo, and fire power.

Joseph Puentin: I hope you never find yourself in a court of law facing either a criminal -or-civil grand jury hearing your case to decide to indict or clear you for shooting an assailant if you plan on stating you were shooting to kill an assailant, rather than stopping the action of the assailant that put you in fear of grave harm for you or your family. If you are indeed a gun owner, you better quickly learn the difference.

I love all steel revolvers also. I do have a S&W Nite Guard in 44special that I've enjoyed carrying as a camp/hiking gun, but 44spcl don't beat you up much, even w/ the scandium frame. I think Reminton used to make a 44 mag SWC load that was moderate(1000fps), and Corbon's Glaser ammo includes a 44mag offering. Those might just be the ticket for short barreled cannons. I've CCW'd a 4" S&W model 58 for awhile... just b/c I could! 6 rounds of 41mag can be comforting also!!! Thanks for sharing

A really nice for the money short 44 mag is the made by Taurus Rossi 2 inch barrel snub. I know people poo poo Rossi's but this is not your stepdad's Rossi. This is basically a Taurus Model 444 with a different grip and a 5 shot cylinder vs the 444's 6 shot cylinder and the Rossi name stamped on it.. It is fairly lightweight for a 44 mag and seems to be just as well made as the Taurus. Very easy to conceal and shoots nice with anything but 44 mag bear loads. I shot some HSM 305 grain bear loads through mine and the recoil was fairly harsh but most everything else I have shot through it is manageable . If you really need a 44 mag with a short barrel but you are on a budget you should give it a look. Retail price is around $370.00! BTW, great channel Marshal! Thanks for the vids.

Glock and Springfield XD guns are cool but there is a learning curve when using one. Revolvers are simple to use when in a combat situation. They also tend to be more accurate.

I got a Kramer pancake holster in horse hide for my 629-5. It does work. And a long, untucked t-shirt does hide it. However, my wimp factor kicks in. My woods are rather more urban most of the time and something that fits in my pocket (the SW 638-2 38Spl will, although some people notice) is just more comfortable. Plus I'm not a fan of wearing belts. My Walther PPK/S also fits in a pocket nicely. But you need faith that a .380 ACP will stop a bad guy. The Walther also has no external slide lock.

My reasoning for carry of one is simply as backup, if my 1911 is for whatever reason not enough, I know that a .44 will do it. If it doesn't, nothing will and I'm just fucked.

I bought the 629PC in 44 mag because I couldn't anything similar in 45 LC...I carry 44 SPL in mine. Love it. It is a MONSTER with heavy magnum loads....sheesh

It seems like 44 SPL would be the way to go for carry. There is a lot of talk of 357 magnums being too loud and causing hearing damage. The 44 magnum would be that much worse. Making loud noises on the range when you have hearing protection would be fun too.

If you don't have an aversion to leather holsters, check out Black Hills Leather. Good holsters competitively priced. They're maid to order for the most part, so there is a waiting period but damn fine leatherwork.

Ruger lcp is a great quality pocket pistol. "The .380 is not a defensive round!" Anything is a defensive round if it goes "BANG." The fact is, no matter what caliber you're carrying, shot placement is key. A 500S&W to the leg will do less damage than a .22 LR to the head or chest. Hitting the respiratory, pulmonary, or nervous system is key to kill.

Amen! Carry what you can shoot accurately with. 22 or. 44 I don't judge, just stop the threat and only the threat.

great guns, worthy of every video review, but those boot grips are as impractical as you can get on a big bore revolver. small grip area, abrasive as all hell and elusive on the quick draw. yea those grips have their defenders, who've lost a pint of blood and an inch of skin before growing accustomed to them. good video, as usual

Nice group of tools. 44 mag, pretty much 1 shot show stopper. Depending on your needs I stick to smaller rounds normally. But I do realize that my small guns might need a few clips to show stop a bear or moose. Me semi auto might double feed or jam. Keep it simple! I knew only 357 mag mainly. I always thought it seemed thin or light for itself. Overall not bad. I just felt like I wanted something more beefy. 10 mm looks good but I want a revolver 1sr.

Well, not all of us have an indent there but at least the bulge is soft. ;) the nice thing with the 44M is that you have the power for woods hiking but can carry some warm 44 Specials for EDC. Personally I would skip the guns with the muzzle blast amplifier (a.k.a. ported muzzle) but that's just my personal preference.

I agree, I have a g19. cant beat a glock. I have only shot a revolver a handful of times. Still, I'm a big fan of smaller guns. 357s/38s tend to just fit my hand. hopefully I can pick one up and learn to shoot the bigger calibers more accurately.

@FirearmPop I have a video up of me shooting buffalo bore ammo out of the shorter barreled one with one hand. You can really see the recoil. I am exaggerating the recoil a little though for the sake of the slow motion camera.

Loved it One of my carry revolvers A Taurus 44 special 5 shot I picked up new in the mid 90's . I would bet it is same size as your 6 shot 357 ,, Just a preference on my part A 44 a bit heavier then the 357 bullet .. yup a bit slower then the 357 as well .
