Easiest Way To Improve Knee BEND (Flexion) While Sitting

Sometimes being able to measure progress on your own provides more motivation and gains improvement. This is the easiest way to measure knee range of motion improvement without depending on a physical therapist or using a goniometer.
If you have a favorite way of measuring your own range of motion please let me know in the comments below.

I have tried to express to my physical therapist as well my surgeon doesn't seem too concerned that my progress I was at 75 80 now I'm back to 70 and my hamstring and the muscle on the right side of my thigh whatever that is is extremely sore so I will definitely try this I am 6weeks post op.

So pleased to know I am not the only post op patient at 4 months having trouble getting past 90 degrees. Now I feel maybe 2 Hydrotherapy and 3 Physiotherapy sessions per week on top of exercising each day at home might be a factor that I am over doing things and not resting enough. It's a difficult decision to make when all I want to do is be back to ' normal ' after such a shockingly brutal TKR. By that I am referring to the pain which still hovers around each day. I enjoy your video's and advise after watching others then choosing yourself only to take suggestions from. The old saying " too many cooks spoil the broth " one Physiotherapist online only works for me. Grateful thank you.

Great Advice. I am 3 weeks post op TKR. My last PT visit was great. I went from 86 degrees pre PT that day to 96 degrees and was able to get a full turn on the stationary bike. This was last Thursday. Over the weekend I regressed. Today is Monday and I have improved again. It’s amazing how one good PT session can require several days of rest before pushing onward again.

I am on week 4 of my RTKR and month 4 of my LTKR and this is the best description of what happens during recovery when you over exercise and your knee gets tight, causing soreness for a day or two. Thanks for this great information, it took me months to learn this through my own recovery.

Therapy was making my recovery horrible . If it wasn’t for me taking matters into my own hands, I would not have made it. My pt put me on a bike 3 days after TKR, which triggered my sciatica . I explained what happened and he said it was nothing and that he had a lady that was just like me and doing fine on the bike. I changed PT to one across town. Once a week, that’s all, no matter what they say. It’s once a week. I do the rest. Surgeon has given me permission to drive! Listen to your body. You are so helpful.

Having the right therapist right away makes a huge difference. 2 days after surgery I had an in home therapist that pushed me so hard that the next 2 days I was hurting so bad that I could not do anything. Absolutely horrible. He was so aggressive. I totally agree that sometimes a little less is better. I am almost 7 weeks out with a partial knee replacement and still am not to where I should be. Very discouraging. Thank you for your insights and helpful ideas.

I just saw this video and what you shared CONFIRMS in me that my decision to cancel my 2nd round of approved theropy . I felt like my goal of recovering from TKR was different from the theropist who needed to record on my report each Visit a certain amount of progress in just 2 hours per week...We are not all the SAME WE WILL PROGRESS AT DIFFERENT RATES. I Have chosen SLOW & STEADY EVERY DAY AT HOME 3-4-5- or more times per day I spent about $300 on a few knee exercise tools & I use them 7 days a week faithfully I believe if you do the work you will get what you have worked for NOTE! I had LEFT TKR on 4-25-22 back to normal after 6 weeks or so I had RIGHT TKR on Dec 21st 2022 ...It about 9 weeks now but making steady progress without the pressure of a time deadline to reach a certain number SLOW & STEADY FOR ME!! Daily measurable progress until you reach you goal.

thank you so much for this bend video. I am 5 months out of surgery. I've had a manipulation of the knee already. I do my exercises and started swimming when my surgeon sais I could.. I have ended my physical therapy after 5 months. After the manipulation I was n therapy daily for two weeks. I still do my exercises at home.I was feling good about my progress until I went out shopping today for a few hours. By the time I was finished I was miserable. Also after the manipulation my surgeon suggested a piece of equipment they call an extendinator. I have been using that three times a day. Some days after therapy and working out it is to painful to use. Your video I feel much better and not a failure.Thank you. I'll keep working hard an listen to my body. I've felt in the pass I should work through the pain. Again thank you.Lois

I had TKR 3 weeks ago. This past Friday was my 2nd daily physio. The pain I felt afterwards after keep pushing my knee back until I shout out and get told to relax. I can't relax because I'm on edge waiting for the moment again. Well yesterday I was so sore I couldn't face to do the homework. Today I've done the homework and this video has shown me a way to measure any progress, and to recognize Friday's physio was too much.

Hi Tony, I'm 2.5 weeks after a right TKR using Mako. At the same time i had 3 screws removed from a metal plate when i fractured my tibia & fibia in 2005. The screws were removed so my surgeon could perform the operation in one go using mako or 2 seperate operations on the uk nhs. All went successful he said. Ive been doing a few exercises throughout the day & walking, iceing etc but seemed to hit a pain level i cant get passed. However after online research i came across you & what can i say except brilliant, the knee flex in the hallway works great, also lying on the floor with leg on the sofa, the one against the kitchen work top, i rest, sit on the kitchen table so my legs dangle & i can easily assist with my other leg & hold it for a few good seconds. When sitting put my foot on a small-ish ball to keep it bent or up on the stool to get it straight. I do these througout the day & not just have an hr here & an hr there, it feels better already....Fantastic....keep the videos coming....one subscribed happy person.

This is a very important comment you shared. I would recommend trying more frequent, less intense sessions. If you feel what I call a rebound effect... More sore and stiff the next day, then you are likely doing too much. Try short sessions more frequently throughout the day. Try less intense sessions more frequently. Let me know how that feels after a couple days.

I’m 6 weeks post of TKR and a fitness instructor who’s anxious to get back to teaching. That motivation has adversely impacted my typical effects to push myself too much. NOT working in this instance. YOU’VE helped me to understand less can be more. PT days create a 2-3 day cycle of increased pain despite my therapist motivation that I’m ahead of “ schedule “ re range of motion and resumption of strength. That’s only fueled my focus on “ doing more “ not incorporating REST DAYS into my weekly plan. Can you clarify “ rest days “? Are you suggesting complete rest? Or limited movement. This is the missing link for me and perhaps other over achievers out there. TY🙏🏼❤️

So true first physio 2 weeks post op and I was in extreme pain not able to sleep surgeon said no physio and rest for the week. It was even causing my incision not to heal so they didn’t remove the staples for another two weeks.

I love my PT but I see your point about doing too much in therapy and then not being able to do the exercise program for a couple of days. At the "just past" two week mark, I'm trying to severely cut back on pain meds. Dealing with a painful recovery process and the fear of a medication dependency is a horrible combination.

Hi Tony I enjoy enjoy enjoy your videos. I've watched them before my tkr Nov 24 2020. I only had physical therapy for about five weeks. My flexion was 123 and my extension was 0. Someday I know I've over exercise when have pain through out the night. Im grateful for this video because I struggle with the flexion sometimes. I don't want to lose what I worked hard for now that I am own my on. One question tho my shin is still very painful is that normal?

I will share some video of a client who also had an ACL reconstruction and is struggling to regain range. I will show you what we are working on and perhaps you can get some ideas. Did you work with a physical therapist?

Yes sure please send me. And i worked with sports therapist but i think it wasn't as intensive as it should be in the beginning because i can't tolerate pain much. Nowadays due to lockdown🇳🇵and corona virus i visit my therapist twice a week but before i used to go to rehab center every day.

Thank you for the helpful video's. I am 3 months post op TKR. The knee is still warm to the touch. Is this normal? Also my ROM was improving until I started to do weighted leg extensions. I went from 129 degrees down to 122. I stopped doing the leg extensions over a week ago, however the knee is still painful when bending and my ROM has not returned. I am walking 2 miles almost every day. Thank you
