Easiest Way To Do A Subaru Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement!! No Press Necessary! On Car Installation

Фильм және анимация

In this video, I experience the dreaded Subaru wheel bearing noise on my gc8 . This is not an easy job if you have to take the whole hub off and undo the parking brake or e brake if you will. But, there is an easy way to do it without taking your car apart! That's right, this is how to replace rear wheel bearing on a Subaru, the easy way!! The hub is removed with a slide hammer, then you just remove the seals and use a special kit I bought at Harbor Freight to do the wheel bearing removal. I bought the cheapest bearing I could find at a local parts store because I just need it to hold up until I do the wrx sti swap . As you can see, I still have my 2.5 RS hubs / knuckles but I am running the STI Brembos with the appropriate adaptors and big shoe kit. I hope this video was helpful!

Bro, well done. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm going to have to replace the rear bearings on my GF8 and this really helps get my mind around the project before I dive in. 👍

Glad this video eases the thought of doing it! Make sure you freeze the new bearing while you’re taking everything apart. It helps a lot!

I recommend using the old bearing sleeve to press the new bearing on.

U asked why so easy ...I haven't read the other comments and probably someone else has told U but freezing temp reduces dimensions....That process of assembly is not new ....Used it to put Huey copter gearboxes together ...They froze case bolts and installed them in undersized threaded holes .... this prevented the them from rattling free under operational use (Gear box failure during flight)

I don’t think you’re going to see this comment but. We used to warm up the housings And freeze the bearings, particularly for precision bearings. It makes the installation a lot easier As you noted when you install the new bearing assembly.

I didn’t hear my knuckle up but I’m sure that would make an even easier installation although just the freezing of the bearing made such a huge difference. Never doing one without that step ever again lol

Metal shrinks or contracts in the cold. The tolerance will open up a hair more making the bearing easier to install vs being at room temperature

When it comes fresh from the freezer dont let it hang in the hole like you did. You let the cold wick into the knuckle and it will contract as well. You want to move faster.

12:38 You're actually not supposed to remove that plastic lock... it may work just fine via this method (I use a press), or maybe you just got lucky, but that plastic lock isn't removed until during the installation of the hub (the hub should be installed about 75% of the way, then ST 927450000 removed so you can remove the plastic lock, then use the same tool to install the hub the rest of the way). That lock is used to keep both taper bearings aligned. If one falls out of place, you could jam it into the axle housing and then you'd need to replace both (I know this from experience).
