Easiest Way To Do A Subaru Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement!! No Press Necessary! On Car Installation
Фильм және анимация
In this video, I experience the dreaded Subaru wheel bearing noise on my gc8 . This is not an easy job if you have to take the whole hub off and undo the parking brake or e brake if you will. But, there is an easy way to do it without taking your car apart! That's right, this is how to replace rear wheel bearing on a Subaru, the easy way!! The hub is removed with a slide hammer, then you just remove the seals and use a special kit I bought at Harbor Freight to do the wheel bearing removal. I bought the cheapest bearing I could find at a local parts store because I just need it to hold up until I do the wrx sti swap . As you can see, I still have my 2.5 RS hubs / knuckles but I am running the STI Brembos with the appropriate adaptors and big shoe kit. I hope this video was helpful!

Bro, well done. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm going to have to replace the rear bearings on my GF8 and this really helps get my mind around the project before I dive in. 👍

Glad this video eases the thought of doing it! Make sure you freeze the new bearing while you’re taking everything apart. It helps a lot!
I recommend using the old bearing sleeve to press the new bearing on.
U asked why so easy ...I haven't read the other comments and probably someone else has told U but freezing temp reduces dimensions....That process of assembly is not new ....Used it to put Huey copter gearboxes together ...They froze case bolts and installed them in undersized threaded holes .... this prevented the them from rattling free under operational use (Gear box failure during flight)
I saw all these parts pages selling hub repair kits instead of the whole thing. Now I know how to do it.
I don’t think you’re going to see this comment but. We used to warm up the housings And freeze the bearings, particularly for precision bearings. It makes the installation a lot easier As you noted when you install the new bearing assembly.

I didn’t hear my knuckle up but I’m sure that would make an even easier installation although just the freezing of the bearing made such a huge difference. Never doing one without that step ever again lol
Great video. I’m going to try this method out soon

16:35 i have a lot of play in the hub/bearing at this point. any ideas why?
You can heat the housing as well to make it easier to install
Very knowledgeable... good stuff.

Thanks!
helped a lot
Metal shrinks or contracts in the cold. The tolerance will open up a hair more making the bearing easier to install vs being at room temperature

Ah gotcha. Yeah it went in easier than the other one I did a couple years ago
0:28 as soon as i saw that gc. ❤ ooof. soo bootifull.
Good job! 👍I just wish you would have showed the bushings you used to remove and install the bearing and hub.
When it comes fresh from the freezer dont let it hang in the hole like you did. You let the cold wick into the knuckle and it will contract as well. You want to move faster.

What is your rear brake setup? I see an adapter to bolt on the caliper, and you’re probably running oversized shoes, but what rotor is that?
@StayOnTheGas
4 жыл бұрын
I’m on stock RS knuckles and I’m using some caliper brackets and oversized shoes (don’t remember the brand) and the rotors are 04 STI DBA rotors
I keep snapping my fingers and it don’t work! Btw you not got seals (2) on the rear? Mine is an 2004 Impreza wagon edit: I spoke too soon on the seals lol sorry
I'm about to have to replace mine. I know on some vehicles you're supposed to put grease in the bearing. Do you have to add grease to these bearings?

If you buy the ones like I did in the video, they come pre-packed so you don’t have to. Just have to pop the old one out and new one in

Thanks man. This should work on all press-in style bearings 👍🏼
After i put in the new hub i just forgot about it 15:18 . I had to pull it out and re install it again
After watching this DIY vid…I ordered a new rear hub 😅.

Did all the new seals happen to come with the bearing? Looking for an all inclusive kit

@@barrythomas6429 I wound up ordering a full bearing and hub kit with seals on rock auto. Like $50 each
12:38 You're actually not supposed to remove that plastic lock... it may work just fine via this method (I use a press), or maybe you just got lucky, but that plastic lock isn't removed until during the installation of the hub (the hub should be installed about 75% of the way, then ST 927450000 removed so you can remove the plastic lock, then use the same tool to install the hub the rest of the way). That lock is used to keep both taper bearings aligned. If one falls out of place, you could jam it into the axle housing and then you'd need to replace both (I know this from experience).

I have a press as well but this is way easier than having to mess with the brake shoes. I didn’t know about the plastic ring tho, thanks for the info! I’ll keep it in next time lol

@@StayOnTheGas All good. Mostly it's just Subaru's "over-engineering" ie "a little extra time engineering for a rare occurrence can save millions in time and money when produced at scale." BTW; you need the FSM for your car? I should be able to get you a link.

What DYIer would have a Special tool 927450000. Usually pressing in the hub will push out the plastic without harm.

@@ayeeiou9147 Well....I consider myself a DIYer, albeit perhaps with a much larger budget than most (no wife or kids)
Can I replace just the hub and not the bearing?
@StayOnTheGas

No because the bearing race will come on the hub, thus needing a new bearing
Using a shop press and the bearing puller kit makes the job 10 times easier.

Am I missing something? Can’t you just replace the entire wheel bearing ?
Instead of turning up the ac, put the bearing in the fridge or freezer.....
Instead of grinding a slot, I bet a heat gun could be used.....
