It’s 8” with GoBoard Blue screws. 12” with their screws with the big washers. 6” if you use Hardi backer screws. For the handy men and DIYers out there drywall screws will be fine at whatever screw schedule you usually go by.

I've been following your bathroom renovation projects and appreciate the insights you share. I recently conducted a detailed exploration into the safety and installation practices concerning foam core backer boards, specifically focusing on the critical role of wood blocking for secure grab bar installations. Our findings highlight the potential risks and structural integrity issues that can arise from omitting wood blocking, even with the most reliable materials and techniques. Given the importance of safety and durability in renovations, I thought this information could be beneficial to your projects and audience. Incorporating wood blocking can significantly enhance the strength and safety of grab bar installations, a detail that's often overlooked. I'd be happy to share our findings and discuss further. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community!

15:21 Good job here and glad doing. I’ve seen many ppl not do this or just don’t care and don’t, thinking “everything will be fine” once all is installed etc…. ¹ Granted, there are diff ways to do “this step” along w/ waterproofing systems; so ok if not using this particular method, but whatever method using for a shower/tub install…..don’t forget the waterproofing system and all the steps that needs to be done, imo.

I used GoBoard in both of my new bathrooms and I would use it again. It's worth noting that they are made of fiberglass not foam like polystyrene Kerdi Board or similar. Regardless, they perform the same function, were much easier to work with than cement board and more competitively priced than Schluter, but care should be taken when handling it and cutting it. The gray outer face isn't too bad to touch without gloves but the unsealed inner core can be irritating, literally and figuratively, when cutting it or touching the exposed edges. In my case, gloves and a mask helped to keep liberated fiberglass particles off my skin and out of my eyes and lungs.

One of the qualities of Go Board sealant is the fact it sets quickly. That can be frustrating because if the left too long between a seam it will curdle and become a lumpy mess if you happen to go over it with more sealant. I don't know why the sealant in this video doesn't do that.

I'd love to have him weigh-in on this question, but the vibe I've gotten from his other work and things I've come across is that it kind of varies with the situation. Building out the studs to accommodate the boards going over the tile flange seems to be "best", but isn't always practical if you end up with difficulties lining the shower walls up with the neighboring drywall. I can't find it at the moment, but he has a super short video where he talks about the ways to work around the tile flange and discusses these two methods.

Your video is great. But I'm confused about this: after furring the studs and adding the goboard, how can that be flushed with the purple wall? what goboard size are u using?

Realizing it would be a lot of sealant, could you use sealant for the Kerdi band or valve gasket, rather than thinset.

Nice, but no need for the furring strips. Just take your foam board to the top of the flange and install your tile to within 1/8" from the shower tray. The thinset and 1/2" trowel with make up the depth difference.

Not a good idea when your 2 outside studs are flush with pan but the 2 center studs are back over 3/8"! You gotta shim it somehow. Even wet shimming would work, as well. But, then you gotta wait 24 hrs before tiling that wall.

@@bryanbenson6551 were the furring strips added to help make the new sistered studs plumb/level? So the board can be perfectly flush while being prepped? That’s what I initially thought, since the strips went all the way up

no they were only to bring the goboard out past the base flange. the new studs were leveled before attaching them to the crooked existing studs @@ohokayofficial

I’ve been thinking about switching to using go board in my bathroom remodel business, is the efficiency vs cost factor really worth it when factoring in needing the dedicated fasteners and sealants? I mean Cement board is very inexpensive, and mud, mesh tape and liquid membrane are always on hand.

Can't find Go Board anywhere around here. Out of stock, no eta. Lowes has been out for many months. It's such a shit show with all these lightweight tile systems - somebody sells Kerdi Board, but not fasteners or All Set or Kerdi Fix. Or Go Board, but not sealant or niches. Really frustrating trying to piece together a full system and it's been like this for years now. /end rant
