A lot of highly-rated vids have peeps gushing over them, but they actually seem to hide the method with sudden flips and stuff that make it stupidly difficult to follow. It's crazy that I've watched 4 or 5 vids and still feel uncertain (though the fact I'm using a floppy, flat shoe-lace really isn't helping..)

Thank you...I visited a WW 2 Navy veteran last month. I ask him do you remember how to tie a bowline knot? He looked at me and laughed...then got the cord to the vacuum cleaner and tied that knot. He did it so fast I had to have him slow down to show me. It looked like he did it with one hand. The left hand just held the cord and the right had did all the work.

When I learned this knot in construction the person told me it was used to tie the string on a long bow and that it was easy to untie and very secure. Funny that I used it to tie my boat but did not realize it's many uses. Thanks for the tip, I will try it.

The bowline is not adjustable after it's tied. That's the point, it won't slip. It's a common rescue knot also. I had to watch this video twice before I realized he was tying it lefty, then I was able to translate it into our rescue knot training in scouts. This is exactly the way we were taught. The idea is that it can be tied one handed while holding on to your rescue or the rope to steady yourself. Then wrap the rope around your rescues waist and tie the knot. Yes I know there are other rescue knots, we learned many. This one was the intro knot so to speak. We had it down to half a second to tie it. With a little practice, my fingers remembered the moves. Nice video. Thanks.

Great video-using educational methods any certified teacher would use!! Love the “ rabbit and log” bit.…good for the spatially challenged like me. Great to use for tying plants to a stake, gives the stem room to grow and not bind. Tip: The speed of any video on KZread can be slowed down by clicking the Settings icon at the bottom of the video>Speed> : 0.25/0.50/0.75. Comes in handy when there’s something you have to pay particular attention to. Also picture diagram of a bowline knot on Google Images.

I think the Marlon Spike hitch method is quicker. Plus you can make last second adjustments to reduce or increase the size of your loop as your tieing it.

  • @ralph1058

The demo is the regular way to tie that knot, but by putting the working end through the loop you actually made an overhand knot. If you hold the standing and working parts of the rope together then enlarge the loop it will always form an overhand or underhand knot, so to me the over/underhand knot will always be the first part of the bowline.

Note that the bowline and the sheetbend are the same not. The bowline makes a loop and the sheetbend connects two ropes together. The one-handed bowline was a necessity in rock climbing before all the fancy new gear was invented. And it's nice to know when you don't have a carabiner handy.

Good, clear delivery. Good use of your mistake to turn it into a teaching moment. However, that tail on the thick rope was way too short! The bowline can easily loosen and untie, so tails are essential. Even better, secure the tail with an overhand or half a double-fisherman's knot on any strand. LOL- I used headphones so I wouldn't disturb the Mrs., but I kept looking around to find out what was ticking- toaster oven, cooking timer, jack-hammer at the construction site outside...? Oh, no, it's on your video! Great technique to handle the crux of this knot, trying to get the right orientation of the "rabbit hole" and tree or log. Great demo with various ropes, which bears out some essentials in rescue scenarios. Use rope strong enough for rescue and flexible enough to secure the knot. People needing rescue (even us) may be too exhausted, hypothermic, injured or panicked to remember and tie any knot, so a rescue loop should be already tied on the rope end. Thanks again, good job!

@@Ron_the_Skeptic exactly. I learnt it as around the tree, which makes sense and is easily memorable. The rabbit comes up the hole, round the tree and back down the hole. simple. visual.. memorable. the tree not being 'vertical' is neither here nor there. it's a mnemonic device not an actual tree.

I kept having the same problem i think i was putting the the rope into the wrong hole at the last part of tying the knot Because i had the loop of the knot and loop of the bowline of a similar size When learning keep the first loop small 2 or 3 ins and the end of the tying rope short 7 ins maintaining a huge loop hanging down with the tying rope That way you can differenciate the correct hole. Hope this helps

The bitter end is the end of the rope that is secured to (for example) the anchor locker on board the boat. That's why when you do something "to the bitter end" you do it until all options are exhausted: you've run out of rope, there's nothing left. The "working end" is the end of the rope that you are using when you're making a knot. Working end and bitter end are different things.

So the LINE that secures the BOW of the boat is called the Bow Line so shouldn't the knot be pronounced as The Bow Line Knot ? CHEERS :)

To keep from really agitating your viewers, you should start off with telling people that you are left-handed and that all right-handed people will need to do everything in the reverse of how you do it... right-handed people will hold the working end in the right hand...

Too many knots ! too confusing and actually burdensome. What we (I) need is one good loop knot that is strong, will not come undone accidentally, and be easy to untie in all environments including water after heavy loads, . I'm guessing here from what I have seen.... How about the Water Bowline with the Yosemite finish ? All I need is one best knot. STOP confusing me. If you or any other expert can suggest one best know please do so. Also please place emphasis on being able to untie as I am tired of good ropes with knots in them that I cannot untie as I sometimes put thousands of pounds on them and they squeeze up real tight.. Also.... If I need a loop in the middle of a rope I can see how the bowline on a bight will provide me with two loops but if I needed only one loop would there be any benefit to the Alpine Butterfly Loop in terms of 1. strength, 2. will not come undone accidentally, 3. and can be untied easily after loads of thousands of pounds. If for any reason the double loop bowline on a bight is superior I dont have to use both loops if I only need one and I cannot imagine any situation where the extra loop could not be used even if I only need one.

using proper knots is key to rope management, the bowline undoes easily even after being stressed. the small loop at the top of the knot can be bent back - it is called breaking the back of the knot - and the rope can be worked loose. Alpine butterfly is a great knot but so is the figure of eight and other options. If learning 5 basic knots is a problem for you get a book from the library or a store so you have a reference and practise before you expect to be comfortable tying these knots when you REALLY need them, and NEED to trust they are tied correctly.

I'd watched a couple of other videos showing that knot and they all tied it from the other direction. Your videos undoubtedly save left handed people much frustration. Good luck with your channel!
