I’ve been playing and teaching jazz for over 40 years. Aimee, thank you for your amazing videos. They are so much more accessible than almost any other teacher I have ever heard. Your mastery and clear love for the music are clearly evident. But beyond that, it’s your openness and honesty, your unpretentiousness, a dash of humor, and your conversational style that is so refreshing and engaging. Ok, I’ll just say it......you teach with the tenderness of a Mom teaching her own kids. Now, THAT’S special! Thanks for all you do,

I can't thank you enough for this, Aimee. I've been improving for years now and I always get stuck in a rut. When I do, I always make sure to come back to this video. It's a huge help. I also think we can use the major licks for relative minor keys! And probably vice versa... Plus, I agree on the tip about both singing and playing. My high school piano teacher told me that if I can sing it, I can play it. I really like how you both touch upon bringing out something that's already within us. It's a very important principle that can be forgotten in jazz, music, and even life in general.

Wow! That’s insane! That’s what I needed. Thanks, Aimee. I was like the guy you mentioned at the beginning of the video, and just with what you pointed out, I’m improvising all of a sudden! Just playing the chords in the left hand and just freely coming up with different licks and runs with the right hand that will sound better and better as I get better at doing it! That seems to be essentially improvising! Thank you so much! I needed this so much! 😄

Wow! Really great lesson! I think one of the hardest things for beginning improvisers to do is starting a line. Easing into improvisation with these types of licks is great. As you were playing them over tunes I knew, I could hear where I would want to go next. So these help get the improvisation jump started, and if you know the tune (chords and melody), and you listen to a lot of jazz, your brain will begin to extrapolate out from the lick in a natural, almost automatic way. Really good stuff. Thanks.

Hello Aimee..Great stuff and very valid BUT I get folks asking me teach how them to improvise in jazz YET they've never listened to any. Huh? I can start them off improvising but can't teach the sound, the feeling, the swing and very ethos of jazz.. They have do that for themselves. Jazz has got to 'hit them relentlessly between the eyes" before they can even begin to know what it is that they CAN'T do but burningly WANT to! That takes long hours of leaving the instrument in its case and wrapping ears around the music from Buddy Bolden, via Armstrong to Marsalis, Morton to Art Tatum or Peterson and later, Coleman Hawkins to Michael Brekker, etc. etc. etc.. That, I don't need to tell YOU! Thanks for your video. After 50 years of jazz playing, I can still learn from you because I know what I'm looking for. Voice of America ( and others) taught me that by Shortwave Radio in the late 1950s. Thank you Willis Conovor! God Bless America!

Thanks for this, Amy. I am definitely not a jazzer - Rock and Hindustani (i.e., North Indian) Classical Music (and some Indian Carnatic Classical Music) are the main types of music that sustain me, although there are examples from all other types of music which I like (from jazz, through show songs, musicals, heavy metal). And I can only read the notes of the treble clef, and understand very rudimentary rhythm / timing (from my days playing appalling 2nd. violin in the school orchestra). Guitar is my main instrument, and I am technically not very accomplished - i.e., I play the pieces that I play, but I always make mistakes. And I have clawed my way up to being able to work out chords to rock, blues, pop, and some simple jazz standards by having learned to play a couple of scales 'visually' and using those for improvisation. And now I am paying attention to chord tones and scaring myself by saying the 'A' word ('Arpeggio' - designed to instill fear in the hearts of self-taught rock guitarists such as myself). AND YET, despite all of my shortcomings, and despite definitely not being a jazz player, I have really learned from the videos of yours that I have watched since I discovered your channel about a week ago. So, thank you. By the way , I love 'Somewhere Beneath The Sea', which you played in this video, and had forgotten about that; kind of reminds me - in feel/atmosphere - of 'Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea'. George Harrison did a great version on his posthumous album 'Brainwashed'.

What always helped me when starting to improvise on a new song that had a tricky harmony (I guess you can use same approach to start improvising altogether) was that I just played the melody against an aebersold track for about 200 times and just went from there by ear. Start with little melodies on turnarounds and then modify the melody more and more. This way you get the harmony in your ear. I actually do this to learn new standards, too. I don't even bother to learn the changes first, just find my aebersold track, play the melody a million times and when I get it in my ears, it's super easy to figure out the harmony. It might not work for everybody. But works for me, anyway.
